hi, everyone !

I just wanted to throw in couple questions about the attire and hairstyle for the admission interview.

Would standard black suit and white shirts with black tie be appropriate for the interview?

Also, I have moderately long hair for guys. Would admission look at it
negatively even if I take care of it and neatly style it as shown in the attached pictures? That's how my hair looks usually.

I want some feedback.

Thanks!

I doubt that they'll reject you based on your hair lol. That's probably fine. As for the dress code, I've heard suit and tie is the norm. I expect traditional colors like black suit/white shirt would do just fine.

The suit/tie combo might be a bit too formal for the setting. Maybe change the color of the tie so it doesn't look so Men in Black? I personally like navy or grey suits, but if the black one is relatively new, there's absolutely no need to go out and buy a new one. Just make sure you have it pressed before you go.

Also that hairstyle is fine (coming from someone with much longer hair on top/much shorter on the sides). I saw some guys with bed hair/I just dried my hair after the shower and left kinda look. Don't be afraid to use a comb! If you've got pomade sitting around, use it.

But at the end of the day, choose the look that makes you most confident (within reason of course).

Awesome feedback !
Thank you very much! 🙂

That hair looks lame anyways. I have long hair, but you gotta slick it back. Ladies love the flow, brah.

Don't listen to the kids that say you need charcoal/navy/grey suit. Black is perfectly fine. 80% of the other applicants will be wearing black. Hair's completely fine too. Here's probably the most useful advice I was given when it comes to interview attire: don't try to stand out. It's better for you to blend in than stand out with a bright white suit or some tie.

There was a thread about the whole 'interview attire' from the previous cycle and honestly, the adcoms don't care as long as you don't look like an idiot. It's more about your posture/body language/personality that matters.

Remember to look confident, smile a lot, and prepare concise answers to basic interview questions. Don't say more than you need to. Adcoms care more about how you deliver your answers than what your message is - simply because everyone will be talking about how much they love dentistry.

Also, just in case you were wondering...yes, dress shoes without laces is perfectly fine as well and you don't need some special cuffling or an expensive watch. I wore a black suit, light blue dress shirt, and a striped tie (blue/silver/white) that went well with my skin tone. Simple.

Black suit is fine. New ones get expensive. But you may consider getting a colored shirt and/or tie.

Your long hair will be fine. No need to worry.

Black suits are for funerals and night events. If you want to dress "appropriately" then I suggest you read up on proper conservative business dress. I agree that the colour of your suit probably will not matter, but better safe than sorry right? It's best to put your best foot forward =), if you can afford it of course.

I sincerely thank all of you guys for the replies!
It really helped!!

Do not wear a backpack at interview..my first interview was interesting. Schools prefer black suit if you call admissions.

If "solid" black suits were proper business attire, there wouldn't be a slew of guides out there advising otherwise. In addition, none of my interviewers, admission members, and or professors wore black suits at all of my five interviews.

The secretary's opinion is not equal to the admission committees. He or she might have confused funeral black with dark charcoal. Not saying I hold any animosity towards assistants though. I love our admission secretary, she's the nicest person ever!

Honestly, your black suit will be fine and that hairstyle seems fine to me too. Since the suit color is fine and suits are expensive, the only tweak I'd do, like someone else suggested, would be to wear a slightly different colored tie. A black suit with a black tie screams evening IMO.

Just look put together and professional. You should stand out for what you say and how you convey your ideas, rather than your sartorial taste.
