Are Externships Helpful?

Hello,

Do you guys think that doing an externship is helpful? I've been hearing different things.

Also, should the externship be done in the 3rd year or 4th year? Someone told me that if you do an ophtho elective in 3rd year, then you're competing with 4th years... Any advice?

I say if you can do an ophtho elective in 3rd year, go for it! My school had no elective time in 3rd year--all core. I had to wait until 4th year to take my ophtho electives. 😡

As for competing with 4th years, don't worry about it. Unless they've done ophtho electives in 3rd year, you'll likely be on the same level--ophtho is a whole different world! Plus, when you take 4th year ophtho elective(s), you'll look like a superstar! 😎
