During a time of "no war" where are Army Deployments? Can you take your family (or does that totally defeat the def. of deployment?) I'm just thinking the only places they could send you in non-war time would be places where your family could come as well?

Are deployments shorter in times of peace? If I were to volunteer for an overseas assignment like... umm Bulgaria and took my family (or my family followed)... would that decrease my chances or getting deployed from a forced family separation.

*If I was trying to avoid deployments at all cost I wouldn't have joined the military, that being said, anything that I can do to make things easier for my family would be good to know. I understand that once war hits-its a wildcard.

Don't know of any deployments to Bulgaria.

In General......you can't take your family on ANY deployments. What you are thinking about is hardship tours (ie. Korea, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia) where you might be able to bring your family without command support. There are pitfalls to this, especially when it comes to education and health care. Additionally, they won't pay to move your family to your new duty station. That would be on you. If you do a hardship tour that might push you down on the list to deploy, but someday you will end up on top.

As to the "peace" time....In the 23 years since I became an Ensign......we had Gulf I, Somalia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Southern Watch, the Southern Philippines, JTF Horn of Africa, Gulf II and Afghanistan. There is always something going on and as our military continues to shrink, fewer to answer the call.

You are assuming that GWOT is over...despite Bush saying we won and Obama saying it is done...we still have a significant operational presence is several hostile theaters. Medical is one of the first in and last out as evidenced by the troop drawdown in SW asia not really impacting the medical op tempo at all.
