I just recieved a letter from the US Army saying that they will pay for my tuition for 4 years and a stipend of 1275$........of course i have to serve as an officer for sometime after i graduate......anyone ever thought of this?

You would be commissioned as a 2nd Lt. when you are in medical school. Upon successful completion of your time in school, you graduate as a Cpt. However, I do not think the Army is for everyone. You must remember that nowadays you will be a combat zone more than likely. If you are okay with that and want to do it (like myself) go ahead. It'll be an adventure.

There's also a program called FAP. You can signup for this during a civilian residency. You get like $1200/mo stipend and a $26,000 check at the beginning of every year, in addition to whatever your resident salary is.

I got the same letter earlier today!!! Ive thought about it, but I dont think my wife would want me to do it, even if it meant no debt. The way were going right now, the probability of deployment is a little too high for comfort.

Something to keep in mind: I have a friend who went through school on an air force scholarship. She’s trained as a FP, but they have her over in Iraq doing gen surgery. She is now 2 years past her original commitment. Not because she wants to, but because the air force refuses to let her go. The army is at war, so a six year commitment may be extended to 8 or 10 on you. Just something to keep in mind when thinking about a mil program.

Tons of pros and cons. I seriously considered it but went with NHSC. You'll hear horror stories but you'll hear great things, too. After all my efforts in learning about it I decided that you have to be willing to be owned by somebody else, but you will have great opportunities, too. Research it carefully but don't be scared of it. Thousands of docs have done it, can't be that bad!
