Hey everyone,
I wanted to start a thread for discussion amongst those HPSP students graduating and going active this summer. Do a lot of you still have to go to BOLC? What are your plans after graduation? AEGD, specialty, or right to work? Hope everyone is enjoying their senior year, and I look forward to meeting all of you that are going to BOLC at Sam Houston this summer!
Best,
Mike

Hey, I'm not graduating, but I just got the Army HPSP today. So this is a little off topic, but I was just wondering what BOLC is and also what would be the reason to go to AEGD?

Congrats on getting the scholarship! BOLC is the officer's training course that we have to take prior to working as an active duty dentist. The AEGD program is a 1 year general residency where one expands upon what is learned in dental school by gaining further experience in each major specialty of dentistry. Fully impacted 3rd molar extraction under IV sedation, gingival grafting, placement of implants (possibly), and molar endo are examples of several procedures that one performs during this training.

You just got a scholarship yesterday? Is this a 3-year or 4-year? I didn't think the board even started meeting until the end of January, with February being the earliest they would make any decisions.

4-year, I applied early.

Yes, I also got the 4 year scholarship. I was notified about a month ago and was sworn in a before the new year. So not sure, maybe you have a delay in your application?

I think a lot of it just depends on how soon everything goes in.

Hey Mike, it's Matt.... your roommate's roommate at BC.

Good luck on active duty. Are you doing a 1 yr AEGD, did you ever consider a 2 year?

-Matt

I'm a 4th year doing the 2 year AEGD. I am still waiting to hear from Col. Manga. Hopefully in the next 2 weeks I will know.

Matt-
Hope all is well. I am doing the 1yr AEGD. Don't know where I will be stationed yet (find out march/april). I didn't consider the 2yr program because I probably will specialize in the future.

Tuckydent-
Congrats! Are you waiting to hear about your program's location? Doing BOLC this summer?

Yes to both. I am excited to find out where I am going, but I think my wife is more-so. Only a few more weeks.

Do you get paid as an O3 while doing your AEGD? I know it doesn't count towards your pay back time I was just wondering you got minimal living stipend like in Dental school or if you got full pay and benefits since the AEGD is through the Army (I'm assuming it is not civilian).

O-3 pay with all the benefits of active duty. The only thing you don't get is to count it toward your payback.

Thank you. One more question, do you gain an extra year of pay back needed? What about if you do a 3 year residency, do you then have one neutral year and 7 years of payback?

If you're on the residency training and you get in right out of dental school (being on HPSP) you gain additional years of payback, but you pay them back out of the residency concurrently with your HPSP obligation (meaning at the same time).

I also just got the 4 year scholarship. Commissioned at the Boston MEPS last Thursday! Are any of you going to Tufts/just graduating?

Whether it be OSG, ENDO, or 2 year AEGD, has anyone heard yet where they will be doing their residency?

I think you will find out on Fri 2/24 along with the assignments for the 1yr AEGD residents.

Did anyone else get orders to BOLC before starting dental school? I got my orders in the mail yesterday and booked my flight today. I will be starting my first year at Tufts Dental in the fall. Is anyone in a similar situation?
