Last week I opened up my COMLEX score and was shocked to see a score of 407. It was the lowest I had scored from any of the COMSAE's. I hate to blame it on COVID, but up to this point I have studied exclusively in groups for accountability and we would meet at my school, so the combination of being alone and being home where my kids were running rampant definitely took its toll on effective studying.

After shedding a few tears, I have come to the conclusion that I still want to do whatever it takes to match for Anesthesia. I am willing to do whatever is necessary to reach that goal including hiring a company to help in the preparations for Level 2. I am willing to participate in more research, dress up in a clown suit and juggle. I really want this, but I don't want this score to define my career, and I want to choose FM because I love it, not because it was my only option. Is this even possible? I could use some words of encouragement as I am feeling really discouraged.
Apply broadly. Have a backup specialty. No one knows your application like you do, and no one can say how it will be received. When you're done, you will be a doctor, and it doesn't matter whether you match because it's your first choice or your last resort. What matters is that you match so that you can practice medicine.

That's going to be tough. Average 2 years ago (not sure about last year) for HPSP/military match was near a 550. Also keep in mind that sometimes people do a GMO and apply for advanced positions or PGY2 posits later as well. They are often given priority above score. Bare that in mind.

Good luck.

Anesthesia was actually pretty competitive in the last two years with a number of great applicants going unmatched. Did you take Step? I am also assuming you mean the 407 is your COMLEX 1?

Best you can do for yourself is make connections with programs, maybe get some research (which will set yourself apart), audition at programs and kill it, and KILL COMLEX 2. Other than that, apply to a ton of programs and practice interviewing so you can make the best of every one you get.
