I was looking into Army reserves to help pay back some debt and it at first glance didn't look that enticing in comparison to state repayment plans. Could someone please weigh in on this? It seems like 50 k (TAXED) with a sign on bonus for working one seven day week a month to be pretty extreme given the circumstances for such a long commitment. Have others done it and found it well worth while? It seems lousy in comparison to NHSC S2S program but I am unaware of how competitive that is.

Thoughts?

I've been in the army reserves for 9 years. First 8 I was enlisted and this past year as an officer while in dental school under the MDSSP program. So I'm receiving a stiped versus the student loan repayment. I think you may have the requirement mixed up. It's one weekend a month not one week. And then usually around a 2 week training program sometime during the year.

About the student repayment because I had that under my initial contract for undergrad. Taxes are taken out and then it is payed towards your loan and the payment is made once a year. So from a 50k dollar payment about a 1/3 is taken out for taxes and then since your interest has been building up for a year another huge chunk goes to interest versus payment. For example I had 18k in student loans for undergrad. My 30k student loan repayment only paid off around 9k in principal.

But I will say I love doing it. It's nice break from life whenever I have training.
