I hate the stereotype that all Asians know how to do every freaken math problem in the world.

Well, I'm Asian and I SUCK like **** in math.

Currently, I'm a senior, finishing up the last part of calculus that I have managed to successfully put off to the very end. I haven't had math in 3 years and it really sucks to have freshmans kicking my ass. It is so embarassing being in a class where you are the only senior.

Surprisingly, this is my HARDEST class this quarter, and I was hoping this would be a chill quarter. I'm taking Bacterial pathogenesis, parasitology, and Cell cycle as well (which I am doing perfectly fine in). But I am really sucking ass in a lower division freshman course.

I'm graduating and suffering from BEYOND BELIEF senioritis. Are you in my shoes too?>

Calculus is one of those classes where you have to work on problems almost everynight. I took 2 calculus classes, but I took them in the summer when they were the only classes I had and was able to devote as much time as needed on them. I wonder if we'll ever see calculus again. I took it 6 years ago and haven't had the need to use it since then.

RLK, noticed the career change. Why do you want to get involved in Pharmacy all of a sudden? were you unhappy with your current job?

conceptually, ie understanding concepts and solving the problems with them I am good. But I am not one of those people who is a walking calculator. sometimes i wonder what that would be like.

anyway, my dad is one of those walking calculator people (of sorts) and I am not. I happen to be a walking talking magazine columnist. sometimes i wish i was better at fast head math.

edit: oh and I'm not a huge fan of math in general . Its ok when its applied math but the more abstract calculus/stats problesm bored me

That's because you're a twinkie beyod belief.. :meanie:

I'm good at math. My brother was better.. He won the Louisiana State Calculus competition ins 1981.. ok..so he was probably the only contestant that year...in Louisiana.. but.. :meanie:

Ok...I can't help it that I grew up in New Orleans.. blame my parents.

I haven't taken Calculus since highschool. The 1st time I took the PCAT, in the calculus section I saw f' & I thought to myself "what the hell does f-prime mean?"

f' = f-prime = derivative

doh..

Asians that suck at math? you're a rare specie. 😉

Its almost as irritating as the stereotype that Blacks cant get in w.out A.A. I get that alot. (For anyone thinking that Im trying to start an AA flame war, im not). I had an asian friend in high school that was so 'hood' that If you closed your eyes and just listened to his voice you'd swear that you were talking to a black guy!! We used to laugh at the kids because anytime he took a Math class all the kids would gravitate to him for tests and he'd let them copy off him...then when they got their grades back they were like WTF???? 😕 He'd laugh and say "dude, im just as stupid as you!!"

I don't remember ever seeing d/dx with an integral sign afterwards. What does that mean?

Actually I think I am. I'm asian but I sound like a total valley girl.

doesn't that just cancel out both operators and just leave you with the function?? 😕

The second part of the fundamental theorem of calculus.

d/dx (int) from v to u of f(t)dt = f(u) du/dx - f(v) -dv/dx

for example

d/dx (int) t^2 dt from 0 to x^2.

so basically you sub in the x for t, leaving with

(x^2)^2 . d(x^2) - (0)^2 . d(0)

= x^4.2x - 0.
= 2x^5.

That to me looks like (integral (1 d/dx)), which is just 1x.

Oh is that the name you "good ole' boys" use??? I thought you guys called them 'twinkies gone bad' or 'chiggers' or something slick like that. 😉 :meanie:

Don't feel so bad. I'm not too keen on Calculus myself.

The irony was that the simple derivatives etc. I couldn't do. I'd just mess up. In fact, the first test I did the WORST on. How odd is that? But the last exam (before the final), I failed every question EXCEPT the trig substitution/integration problems. He gave us 5 of those and I aced each problem he gave us almost perfectly (one of them, I got 4/5).

I have one more semester (or two if I go the slower route) of Calculus if I decide on become a Microbio major. We can DO THIS!

studies have shownthat asians score higher on IQ tests than whites and whites score higher than hispanics and hispanics score higher than blacks.

I don't know what that all means, but we do tend to think of asians as being smarter. The ones that aren't totally americanized are usually very quiet and stuff...they just have a more intellectual air about them than someone running around hollering hey everyone lookit i don't have any shorts on

I once was good in Business Calculus. Got a "B" with min efforts. Fast forward 11 years and I can not do a simple calculus problem if my life depends on it (PCAT).

Yeah, calculus is going to become real handy in the real world.

Aubie, what are your thoughts on this? I know we are not naturally gifted with brains (although some are). I know that although I'm asian, I had to work my ass off to get where I am today. What do you think about asian work ethics and where/what do you think it stems from? Because you know, I think hispanics and other minorities have it equally bad growing up sometimes, not just asians.

"Chiggers..." Hahah... that's a good one. I'm gonna add that to my vocabulary.

I think its culture. Maybe a bit of genetics but mostly culture.

Youll always have to work. 😛 Even the most brilliant mind won't do much if it just sits on teh shelf.

It's also the name of an insect, I believe.

It's the name of a mite with some medical importance...

lol i was sitting there thinking.....

that's the name of a bug....

wonder if only people down here call that bug that...

wonder what its real name is....

i guess that's what happens when you grow up in the South and come to find that what you've been saying for years is completely wrong....

38ctk I know that this is addressed to Aubie, but I hope you dont mind if I chime in:Its really easy to paint entire ethnic groups with broad strokes: Its easy to just say "asians are smarter" or "Whites are more goal-driven" or whatever little anecdote you can come up with etc. But the reality is that life is alot more nuanced than that. Yes, Im black. But the term "black" refers to African American, Caribbean American, African etc. And Im pretty sure that there is a wide range of success for these groups. I know a lot of really smart Asians, but I also know a lot of asians who are slackers, dumb-a$$es, weed-heads,...I think it goes back to that "Nature vs. Nurture" argument because no one ethnic group has a monopoly on brains no matter what the statistics say!! Yeah I know Im ranting again

*sighs*

I use calculus daily. 3rd semester calculus goes into triple integration where you rotate a function in an axis.. to calculate the volume of irregular shaped object derived from a function. I'm aways calculating volumes of irregular shaped objects..

Ok..not really.

Chiggers are a bitch if you ever get them.

I'm preparing an Aminoglycoside presentation....no help from you students..thanks a lot. :meanie:

It's only offensive if non-chiggers use it. Besides its OK to use it if you spell it "chigga" not "Chigger" :meanie: Hey Im joking remember it's my friend I was talking about..it aint that serious 😀

X factor,

Please make your own thread to talk crap about people. I want to make sure that when I read the threads, I don't waste my time reading B.S. Please be considerate of other people and their time.
