At this point in the season...if no invite AND no rejection..what does it mean?

Hey all,

This is really a question for those who has been in the process before. Currently, I have 3 invites, which I am very thankful for.

For the remaining 24 schools which I haven't heard back from... I know that I'm on hold at 3 because they explicitly told me so. For those other schools, I've been complete since the end of August and early September.

I might not have heard back from those schools because we are in the peak season.. but there have been others who were marked complete well after me and have heard back.. Is possible that I'm on hold or did they REALLY not look at my app yet? I've only received 1 rejection thus far and I know more are coming since a lot of my schools are reach schools for me..

I've wondered the same thing. Who knows? I know some schools won't send out rejections until after the interview season is over.

But I actually do think it's very early in the interview season, so hearing nothing yet doesn't necessarily mean anything.

Congrats on your 3 interviews. I'm interviewing at Drexel too.

Having no invitation or rejection at this date (October 10, 2008) means nothing. There are many schools (my two included) that have not finishing processing application (huge number increase) for this year. If you have a rejection, you are done at that school. Other than that, read nothing into not having an invitation for interview as meaning nothing more than that things are moving a bit slower at that particular school.

If the date was March 1, 2009, I would say that things might not be looking good for you but at this point, many schools are processing and reviewing. We were swamped pretty early and added more clerical folks in our admissions office but still, it's a banner year for us. Chill out, work on your Plan B (what you will do if you don't get in) and don't obsess. The more elaborate and complete your Plan B, the less chance you will ever have to use it.

Some schools do hold all rejections letters until the end of the season just in case room opens up in the schedule to interview you. Rejections can't be recinded so many schools don't want to burn bridges until spring.

I am a reapplicant with 0 invites and 1 rejection out of 20 applied schools. I am getting nervous!

I understand why it's advantageous for admissions to do this. At the same time, it is obnoxious. As much as I was bummed to get my first rejection, at least I was given the chance to get over it and move on instead of waiting/hoping for another 5 months. I respect UChicago's admissions committee for that. There are plenty of schools that are ultimately going to reject me...if they know it already, I wish they'd just get it over with earlier than later so I can have a better idea of where I stand.

That's exactly how I feel. If you're going to reject me, reject me now. That way I can put more effort into schools I actually have a chance at.

Last year my sister got interview invites in march for april and may interviews. Don't worry, be happy!

You've got 7 interviews. Put your efforts there and assume you've been rejected from the rest. If you get an interview invitation after mentally writing yourself a rejection letter from those schools, well, that will be a pleasant surprise.

My goodness, I would just deal with the interviews you have now, and write off these other schools as rejections. I would imagine people without a single interview to look ahead to are the ones who have reason to be nervous.

To be clear, I'm thankful for the interviews I've received...very thankful. While I'm certainly going to put effort into those interviews, I didn't work my buns off and spend lots of $$ to be content with rejections from the rest. Regardless of the fact that I have interviews, I can still lament about the fact that it's crappy for adcoms to string people along for months who they know they are going to reject from early on. Give us some closure.

I understand what you are going through, but that means they might not have rejected you right away. I have heard they put people in 3 piles. Those they interview early, those they put off after the first round of interviews, and those they reject early on. If you are put in teh second pile...don't worry let it play out. After the first set of interviews, you might get a email that lets you know. Its better than being rejected flat out (atleast thats what I think, b/c atleast you know they are remotely interested in you).

omg i'm in the same boat. i have 3 interviews but i have heard NOTHING for a week from the other 21 schools I applied to. I am so frustrated, and when I call, I am told that it may take months 🙁

but I was just looking at the interview invite thread and saw that many schools had invites only for people up until the middle of august. many of them have little or sporadic invites for people complete in september... so maybe it is taking a while for them to look at the influx of apps during the end of august-september period?

There are 10+ schools that I have been complete at for about two months with now word. I'm not reallying spending too much energy worrying about these. In fact, I'd prefer to interivew in December/January when I don't have school anyway.

I was complete at all my school by August 15th at the latest, and have still heard nothing from the majority of them, thank god i have 4 interviews under my belt, or i might be having a nervous breakdown. im hoping silence is good and only means well be interviewing a little later then wed hoped.

OP, it does not mean anything. I am a second year med student. When I applied, I was not even complete until the last week in September. I received my first interview invitation during the last week in October. Ultimately, I had 10 interviews and 6 acceptances. The med school that I now attend (my first choice) is non-rolling and I did not receive an interview invitation until January. I had several interviews in February.

So relax, it is still very early.

Actually, honest question - why would someone with your stats and ECs apply to 24 schools? I can't imagine your advisor told you more than 15 would be necessary, so is it just that you really had no idea where you wanted to go? It seems like a huge waste of money between the secondaries and the interview travel. 😕

So they can brag about getting 15 interview invites to anyone who will listen?

I think I can top all of you: I've been complete at all of my schools for over two months now and haven't heard a peep from any of them. When I call to see what the deal is, they tell me that my application is complete but hasn't been reviewed yet. Take it from me - at some point, you'll run out of "caring" and the anticipation won't bother you anymore.

By the way - last year, Columbia confirmed that my application was complete but then never even sent me a rejection letter. Obviously I'm a reapplicant and no superstar but jesus, I felt owned by that school. At least they could have shown me some respect by sending me a rejection letter for the for the $80 that I gave them. But complete and utter silence?! The audacity! Come to think of it - maybe I'll give 'em a ring to check the status of that old application. I'll play it off like I'm still anxiously awaiting news as to whether or not I got into the class of 2012.

That is a good question. I never discussed school selection with any premedical advisor so I was never told a specific # of schools to apply to. Moreover, I didn't discover SDN until after submitting my primary. Therefore I wasn't aware of what number of schools constitutes "too many"...in hindsight, 24 is a lot. I applied to so many mainly because a large majority of them (as you can tell) are big reaches for anybody...especially me with a lower-than-average MCAT score for those schools. As a more personal reason, I have a significant other (also premed, not yet applying) that I am keeping in mind when applying. I'd really like to end up in an area where he'd be able to get a job and ultimately get into a medical school...therefore, I applied to a lot in larger cities (Boston, Chicago, NYC, Philly schools make up 9 of the schools alone).

You're absolutely right that it is costing me a small fortune. I get paid pretty conservatively, live in my own apt in Boston, and am paying all application-related fees myself...so I am completley aware of how much I am spending :scared:. But I'm hopefully only doing this process once so I might as well do it 100%.

I am not a they (bad grammar by the way). I am a she. And you don't know anything about me so stop being a typical judgmental pre-med. Like most other people here, I worked my butt off to get where I am. I'm proud but I'm not bragging.

There's a lot of schools I haven't heard back from yet, but I'm not too worried about it. It's pretty early in the season still and I think it's nothing to stress over. For those of us with interviews, it's best to just focus on those.

Good luck with your application, linguini; you have a very strong profile.

True dat. I'd wish you good luck, but you don't need it. 😉 I am revoking your right to whine about not hearing from schools though since you got the HST invite today. :meanie:

Thanks to you and otterpop for the good luck. I wish you the same! :luck:

And as for HST, that was amazing and totally unexpected. Whining stops RIGHT now.
