Not even in med school yet, but I see "attendings" mentioned all over the place. Can someone tell me exactly what an attending physician is? Thanks.

An attending is a doctor who is staff (i.e. not a resident/doctor in training)

Residents, reside in the hospital, while attendings tend to the residents.

attending = that guy you never see, the doc w/o training wheels, the guy who bills for your team's work, gets there after the sun comes up and goes home before the sun goes down, the guy who gives you the eval/grade, and much, much, much more importantly, the guy who gets sued.

take care,
davis

you might hear the term 'consultant' if you ever do an elective outside of north america. they are the same as attendings.

This is the doc at the top of the food chain:

Medical Student
Intern
Resident
Fellow
Attending
