Attention all USC class of 2006!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
westside,
one of the packages sent from admissions (after you have been accepted) should have contained an application for parking. last year i submitted my parking form as soon as i received it and was able to obtain a permit for on-campus parking. try this link:

https://www.thepermitstore.com/customer_info.cfm?customer_ID=13

anyway, i'm not sure if you're too late but apply asap. if you don't mind the extra cost, try for the parking structure B (on campus and close to dental school). tho other option is the parking center, which is a little cheaper but, as you asked, is not in the best of places (i'm not sure if there is a security guard there because i've never been there)... but you will have security in numbers because many people do park there. about your quesion about the trams, that is a question that is better directed to the parking and transportation dept at sc.

chipmunk,
if i remember correctly, admissions does sent out a list for people such as yourself. you may even want to submit your information so that other people may contact you. in any case, the list provides preferences (male/female, smoker/non, pets/none, etc) and contact information so that you may speak with a prospective roommate beforehand.

Hey Steve and Mark,

Thanks for the info you gave us on the schedule. seems like there would be lots of free time!! At other schools that I interviewed at, they take anatomy lab and histology in the first couple of quarters. When do you take them at SC? with the MWF schedule, I assume they are PBL sessions. When do you have gross anatomy lab and others? Also as far as the nature of the PBL topics, how are they organized? Is it a different topic each trimester, for example biochem pbl in one and next it would be physiology or are they all integrated?

Thanks again.

Ok guys, I am really really FRUSTRATED with USC right now! I went online to register for parking today and everything is sold!! Steve, I know that you told me awhile back to register, but at that time, they were just taking registration for the summer semester. I don't know when fall parking registration was first available, but I can't believe it filled that fast! I assumed that since admissions did not send information about it, it was not something that had to be done yet. I know that there are lots where you can pay daily to park, but that is way expensive, and if I have classes at 1, I think that it will be difficult to find meter parking. I called admissions to ask why they wait so long to send info, and they basically said that they wait until the class is full to send to info to everyone at once. Personally, I don't think that is fair for those like myself who have known since Feb or earlier that they were going to USC to have to wait until the class is full to find out necessary information, especially those who want on-campus housing!
🙄 😡 😛

You're right, Regina!!

I didn't know anything about parking until just recently on this forum. So what does this mean now? And if the area sucks, I don't want to be walking to my car to street parking!!

I talked to the head of the transportation department and he said to keep checking online for cancellations. I ended up getting a space in the parking center, which I am very lucky to have gotten. He also said they will sell unclaimed parking spaces in Sept. There are lots you can pay daily to park in, but I think they are something like $6.00/day. There are also meters lining the campus which are not bad to walk to, but may be difficult to get. 🙄

Totally ridiculous!!! That is really a bunch of junk. Why not compile a packet after you have accepted with parking, housing, etc info. I hope that you really tore into them. I am glad that you got a spot though!!

regina,
how do you buy the permit at the parking center?

I applied online through the link that Mark posted. I guess they just added the cost to my school account b/c they asked for SSN and no credit card #. 😕

regina,

it's not possible to pay by account?
is there a confirmation number?
we don't have fee bill account yet do we at usc?
this is kind of stupid, this whole process of permits
Vince

i meant to say why is it not possible to pay by credit card

I'm not sure why you can't pay by credit card. Apparenlty we do have an account there already b/c mine was processed and I got a confirmation number.

How safe is the parking center? and how far from the dental building?

Have you guys gotten any financial aid info yet?

I contacted the financial aid office and they mentioned that we will be receiving the packets towards the end of May/ beginning of June.

the reason why they don't ask for your credit card # for your parking permit is because you are only reserving a permit on line. You pay for it when you pick it up in person at the parking office. And don't worry too much about parking. There's always a way out. WHen i started school a lot of people in my class actually gave up their permits cuz they found places to park or they just sold the permit to their classmates.

As for schedule, you do have a lot of free time, but you are SUPPOSED to be studying on those free time...and of course it doesn't always work out that way. As for anatomy, they start you on anatomy lab almost right away...no cutting though...they just have already cut cadavers with the organs everywhere...when you study esophagus, liver, kidney etc...you can go look at cadavers and look at nerves, blood vessels etc and there will be someone there to explain things for you when you ask questions. Personally, I thought this was a waste of time for me, but it does help you understand things a bit.

Hmm what else.....you also start clinic almost immediately. They put you on clinic floor, teach you infection control...they get your chart started so that you are a pt for another stduent doctor (one of you classmates) and you are a student doc to another one of your classmates. you start out doing simple stuff like intra/extra oral exams, how to fill out charts, how to do patient interviews...then move onto more invasive things like perio probing by your second semester. Your third semester, you start scaling and start cutting preps on simulators. Your second semester, you also take x-rays on live patients. Also in your second semester, you start your DOC program where you 'adopt' an elementary school class and you routinely go in and check their teeth, apply sealants, educate kids on oral hygiene etc..(this is pretty fun by the way)....

This is what you guys can look forward come August.

Steve

David,
where are you from in OC.
I am from OC too, but I don't think I can handle commuting about 40 miles each way to get to school.
Anyone from ucla going to usc dental next year?
Vince

hey Vince, im in La habra...between beach and imperial hwy.

its actually 25 miles to USC from here. not too bad.
i dunno, im gonna try this and see if it'll work.

i save about 15-20k/year if i commute ya know.
anyways, if yu wanna hang out let me know dude.

Just curious to see if any of my future school-mates are snowboarders? Those of you from the area, how far is the closest mountain? 😛

hey everybody,

my name is vivian, and i too am going to be a new class of 2006 trojan this fall. i am one of those cross-towners, going from UCLA to the "other" school, USC. *sniff* hehehe... all in all though, i'm really excited about USC in the fall. now that i've come across this board, i'm glad to be able to "meet" other classmates before everything starts.

i'm planning on living with some UCLA friends in the fall, as far as places go, we're not sure where yet. most likely on the westside, or somewhere between westwood and USC. i was lucky enough to get a parking permit early, only because my boyfriend (who just graduated USC) told me about it. USC really should have been better about informing students about it, it seems really screwed up sometimes.

thanks for all the helpful information so far! i look forward to talking with you guys soon.

-vivian 🙂

to answer your question, the local mountains are about 2-3 hours from la depending on the traffic. the snow there is usually bad because it is mostly man-made from lack of snowfall. the better place to go is mammoth which is about a 6-7 hour drive away. i'm sure there will be class trips there next winter break.

Mark,
I'm not that great of a snowboarder either. The mountains here do not come close to comparing to Utah, Colorado, Tahoe, etc, so I haven't had the best practice. And I only have one other friend who snowboards and she moved away. But her brother has his own place in Tahoe. Is that a far drive? I was planning on taking a trip there.

hey marky or steve

as far as classmates relationship, hows it like?

do students see each other as competitors or classmates?

i guess im wonderin if im gonna be meeting bunch of cool guys who knows how to help out each other or some snobby anal people...

also, Hows the school spirit there?
do ppl get together and go on trips and stuff?

All of you soon to be first-years: were you able to access the roommate/non-university housing site they sent in the email? 😕

regina,
lake tahoe is far from los angeles. i've never been there but i think it is close to the ca/nevada border.

david,
classmate relationship is very good, at least in our class. i'm not sure how yours will end up, or how others have turned out. i think good classmate relations is an important part of dental school. if you have good classmate relations, you have a greater chance of keeping in touch and a greater chance of referring to each other. the new pbl program encourages students to work with each other to understand and learn the material and not to keep information from each other.

this is one of the reasons why i am glad that i ended up going to usc and not a highly competitive school because competition can get ugly (and it's harder to make friends when you hate each others' guts).

Steve,

how do you like my new avatar picture? 🙂

*edit*
it doesn't seem to come out so well....

u look very pretty marky...

can i take yu out? haha j/k

Any of you going to live in the University owned Apartments/housing (the information we got in the email)? What do you all think?

I think the chances of getting university owned housing is slim to none at this point. When I called the housing dept about 2 mos ago, they said dent students hardly ever get it b/c they wait too long to send us the info and that I should apply early, before they send the info out. I picked out those places that I thought were decent, printed out the application, and when I went online to look up the codes for the places I picked out, they turned them into undergrad housing and raised all of the prices!!! I think it is pretty expensive too. I would rather get a nice place w/one or 2 other people and pay close to the same price. So if you are interested in USC housing, apply NOW!

Has anyone applied for any scholarships?

is there any still available to apply?

WHo has gotten their financial aid package?

i didnt get anything yet...

You're right, Regina. My initial plan was to find an apt. independent of USC --but since we got the email, I thought I'd ask the question. Who also knows how many square feet those places are, they could be shoeboxes!!

David--

I called financial aid a couple of weeks ago. They said they will mail the financial aid award letters at the end of May or maybe even the first week of June.

SIGH
When are they gonna send out those info already,
especially the student roster list, I need to find a roomate!!!!
Anyone gonna live in the palms or culver city area?

For those of you not from CA, when are u planning on coming to LA? early aug?
anyone from ucla going to usc next year?
VInce

I am moving out to LA in early Aug. I should be there by the 10th b/c I got my Dad tickets to see the Dodger's game on the 11th for Father's Day (his fav team!) So, this will require an Aug 6th departure from PA and I'll have about a total of 9 days to waste before orientation. I plan on finding a place not too far from school, and hopefully something that will cost btwn $500-$600 for 2 people. So, I am looking forward to the roommate list.

Vince, what is the Palms area? Also, Culver City is close to school....is it a decently safe area?

LAURIE
Didn't u get my last email to ya?
i sorta explained the situation with palms and culver city.
Palms is about 10-12 miles west of usc
safer, cheaper than wla or santa monica
check my email, i think i explained more in there
🙂

Vince,
I'm so sorry....I just check the email....yes you did explain. I think my problem is that I've been looking into this too much, that I am getting everything mixed up 🙄

ummm....

I am sorry but I really don't think culver city is safer than santa monica. Santa monica is more expensive than CC but it is an upscale neighborhood. CC is ghetto compared to SM. Haven't you guys heard of the Culver City gang? I used to live in Palms (which is right next to CC) during my undergrad at UCLA and there were ghetto birds flying with their search lights on almost every night. Not to mention my old car got stolen there and stripped to pieces...But I have to admit living in CC was pretty convenient. Lots of good restaurants and 24 hr markets etc...and also even tho CC may be only 12 or 14 miles away, the actual commute time you're looking at is probably around 35+min with traffic on the road. That comes to 45 min door to door commute time to be safe. I was talking to some of my friends today and they told me that to get school houising you need to apply early....like in Feb or Mar. This one friend of mine is moving to a one bedroom univ apt with full kitchen, living room, small bdrm, underground parking, full paid utilities, cable and ethernet for $680 a month. Very cheap....And lastly, some of you coming from out of state may be horrified by everyone telling you how unsafe it is to live in certain part of LA, but I will tell you....get used to it. Unless you shell out big bucks, it's not going to get that much safer. Just use common sense and don't drive around with your car doors open late at night and always dead bolt you apt door. Furthermore, honestly the problem isn't as bad as you think it is. It's not like how it is in some of hte movies like Friday, or in Eazy E's songs. DOn't be afraid...you won't be shot I promise..unless you do something stupid like trying to pick fights with people etc etc....

Steve

but living in culver city definitely beats living in east LA though doesn't it?
Realistically, one can get robbed anywhere. It's just a matter of the amount of risk, but risk is always there no matter where you live.

i meant to say that living in cc is cheaper than santa monica, not safer
living in culver city is safer than east la
sorry, unclear sentence structure
🙂

hmmm....Culver city or east LA....do I think living in culver city is better than east side? Personally...no. yes it might be safer and yes it may be more convenient in terms of things to do (close to westwood), good shopping, food etc...but for me the commute is just too far. I commute to school for 10 min in my car. That time is invaluable for those few times that I am late for class, or if I am tired from studying i can just come home, take a short nap, eat and still go back to school for those late nights at the library or sim lab. If you lived in culver city, you would have to hop on the freeway just to do that...just my $0.02...
steve

Steve,
Your friend who is moving to the one bedroom Univ. apt...is he/she sharing it or has it for themselves?

chipmunk..

as far as i know my friend in one bdrm is not sharing the room. His fiancee might attend USC pharmacy if she gets accepted so I am guessing that's why he got the bigger place so they can live together. Actually I am not even sure if the room is two occupancy....the housing office might frown upon sharing hte place if it's only meant for one person??? I dunno? As for housing, I just got an email from the admissions office that was forwarded to the entire dental school class telling us that those of us who was looking for future roomies should notify them so that we can be added to the roomie list and this list can be sent out to you guys. The deadline was June 7th, so maybe this is something that you guys can look into?

good luck
steve

Thanks STeve.

Got the roommate request list. I asked if your friend was sharing because when I looked at the Univ. apts, they were advertising one bedroom places for two people to share and two bedroom places for 4people to share. I didn't see any listings for one bedroom single occupancy unless it was a bachelor or studio. Thanks again for the info!!

Hey y'all! Looks like the Trojan team is forming. Yee-haw! And welcome aboard HalBurnzU, Baracuda, Mdaishik, David Kang and Vivigirl!!!!

About the BARBECUE!!!: I'm going to put a few dates out there, and we'll do a majority rules deal....

June 15th or 16th
July 6th - 13th
July 23rd - Aug 11th.

Personally, I think a weekend would be easier for anyone working throughout the summer, but with summer vacations and all, you guys let me know when most of you are around.

And of course, it wouldn't be a party without the dynamic duo, Mark and Steve... these guys put the "cue" in Barbecue people... hopefully you guys will join us as we make the Dark Side complete! (ok..easy on the drugs.)

Actually, I have a few questions too for you all:

1) Anybody having LOTS of luck with this teeth collection thang?

2) Is everyone buying books beforehand?

3) Is anyone thinking about or planning on living in Hollywood?

4) Anything we can do to get parking other than the parking center?

5) Can anyone teach Shaq how to throw free throws!!!

For Steve and Mark: So we do take anatomy the first semester... but it is combined with out PBL so that there isn't a set time we go to the lab? And the bodies are always pre-cut so that it's more about looking and learning rather than doing all the cuts ourselves like the med students?

Well, I'm looking forward to meeting my new team... if you have any questions about outside housing... I've lived in West LA, Sherman Oaks, North Hollywood, Culver City, and now Hollywood... (gotta change my address a lot... get more BMG CD's....) call me or email me at [email protected]. And let me know when best we can fire up some steaks on the barbie...

-Keith
