What do people usually wear for those? Business casual acceptable?

I went to one in shorts and a t-shirt and felt totally comfortable and not out of place at all. It depends a bit on where the social is, and what they say in the email (this one really made a point to emphasize that it was casual). I would probably never go more formal than like button down + chinos though

As long as you're comfortable and confident in them, I don't see why you couldn't wear them. I personally wouldn't be caught dead in heels outside of my interview or a wedding but that's just cause I hate heels, lol.

It's better to be overdressed than under dressed. If you have to wear heels the night before, make sure they're comfortable. You don't want your feet to be sore the day of your interview. Good luck! You'll do great!
