Hey for general physician shadowing is it ok to wear dress pants and a basic top (sweater, nice shirt, etc) or do you need to go all the way to a buisness suit???

Thanks

dress shirt/pants is fine IMO. Tie is optional for guys, but many med students during 3/4 yr typically wear one.

I'd say if your relationship with the physician is anything less than bff, go with a suit. If you're close, still wear something professional.

wear what the physician wears, but a step down, you don't want to outshine

I beg to differ... I think that's way over the top. I've never seen anyone wear more than some nice pants, button-down, and nice shoes. No need to dress any nicer than the doc you are shadowing, it'll only make him/her feel weird.

Casual is fine. At the place I shadowed, I had to change into scrubs anyway.

Sorry, I guess I didn't say what I meant. I don't think you should wear a coat, just the dress shirt, tie, and slacks. That's not over the top, just professional.

But as someone else said, another time I just changed into scrubs anyway.

I got bitched at for not wearing a tie. I didn't require that in a hospital but at a clinic it's apparently important. 😳

Deep black suit, black tie, and black sunglasses. Walk up to the nearest sickly patient and say slowly: "I'm here to take you."

Then turn around and smile at the doctor and introduce yourself.

You're always safe going the tie route. It's always safer to be slightly over dressed than too casual. After all, you can take off the tie if it winds up being more than needed or in a place where they are not allowed as germ carriers.

I just asked the Dr. what he considered appropriate before I ever went. Wound up being very casual.

Usually we have to be shirt-and-tie kind of dressed up, but no suit required. If you're worried, you could always call the doctor (or their secretary) and ask what to wear.

as long as you don't look like stripperella going in...

TTIUWP!!!

hey well I am a female so a tie wont be an issue but i am thinking black slacks and a dressier shirt

You want to dress like a med student and ask the physician you are shadowing to introduce you as a med student. It makes things a lot easier because patients sometimes get antsy that there is a random person in the room that technically doesn't need to be there. Sure you could ask, but some patients aren't so kind. You actually want to see those patients though so you aren't caught off guard the first time YOU get chewed out by one. 👍

We tried to explain I wasn't a medical student and people still thought I was. After a few times of explaining why I was there, they got it. I think its up to the patient regardless and most places probably require a form to be signed involving HIPAA? I know that patients waived their confidentiality rights to me and knew fully that I had access to their charts, the exam, etc.

asking is definitely the best way to go. it would be pretty awkward if you're way overdressed compared to the doctor you're with.

I talked with thd doctor and she said "professionally"...I have been going to her as my general for 5 years and she usually is in slacks and a nicer top but I didn't want to upset her if I did slacks and a top as well. I am a female so the tie thing isn't applicable. I am trying to decide between Skirt with mathching shell top and jacket or black pants and an oxford with pullover sweater.
