I'm setting up elective rotations in Path. And I was wondering what type of rotation should I go with first? I'm only doing 2 rotations in path. Autopsy path? Surgical path? Those two I assume are the main ones. I'm assuming I should go with both of those. But then there are so many other options ie. cytopath, kidney, liver, derm... I've seen some places that offer so many options in terms of an elective in path. I got really confused. Appreciate your input.

Are you doing away electives for interview purposes?? (i.e. you are a 4th year)

If so then I would just do whatever rotations you feel you are most interested in. AP will give you more opportunity to be an active part of the medical team.

If you are a 3rd year trying to figure out if interested in path and your school has limited exposure so want to go somewhere else to try??

I would highly recommend both surgical path and autopsy as rotations, there is a lot of opportunity in those rotations for student involvement and hands on experience. But both are anatomical rotations and you won't see the clinical path side of things too much if both your electives are anatomical ones (unless of course you only want to see anatomical path.)

I wouldn't recommend a clinical path elective for a student really (one straight month of heme path, cytopath, etc) because mostly as a student you will just be observing and not much for you to do for a whole month. Just not an active rotation... at least not in places I have seen.

BUT I would recommend seeing some clinical path as a student (just maybe not necessary to do a full month), so a good option is to do an overview of path course. Typically, schools will let you take two one week rotations in anatomical courses and two one week electives in clinical courses to make a one month rotation. Since you see 4 different fields, you get a sense of what you like and dislike or want to pursue more.

So in the end maybe take overview of path first, then take a full month in the field you liked best.
