AZCOM Class of 2006

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
sorry, i just really wanted the 100th post spot 🙂
Teds-- i'm contently suprised that you didn't have to take the usmle for the allopathic residency! I was going to ask you how many years your EM residency is?? do you have to do an extra year for the DO requirement? That is so impressive! my bro-in-law is one of the nicest/smartest people i've ever met and he is doing EM at washu right now and just loves it-- but he had a hard time matching out of UCLA med school so kudos to you for getting to where you are at!!!!

My residency is strictly a 3 year program. I won't get AOA approval unless they change their restrictions.

There were circumstances that did not permit me to take USMLE and it was not because I was not prepared to take it. I would strongly suggest taking it, that's why I believe I am not on the West Coast though I did get an interview in California. Many NY programs are willing to consider just COMLEX scores, so I am truly grateful. 😎 😎 😎

Sometimes I have very strange dreams. I blame it on my overactive writer's imagination. I had one last night about continually taking board exams. I have no idea why. I was just sitting at a computer clicking away and answering questions I had no idea about. That is a weird thing to be on my mind right now, I think.

But you give really great advice Ted. I had a question about those 5 horrible states. You'll be in New York, which I think is one of them. Do you have to do a rotating internship first or do they let you do your residency there without it, but you couldn't practice there afterward? I was just curious about that.

Hey Kadyra,

NY is not one of the 5. The states requiring the AOA approved internship are Florida, W. Vriginia, Michigan, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania (that is why I ranked the programs in Philly lower, because they were 3 year programs, so I wouldn't be licensed).

Without an AOA approved internship year in those states (they can be osteo or allo) you will not be licensed in that state and will be unable to practice after residency. I have seen posts elsewhere (a while ago) that say that there are loopholes, a way around that requirement, but someone else would have to post, because I don't know what those are. Sorry 😕

i'm simplifying this a ton-- but does that mean that unless you want to practice in Florida, W. Vriginia, Michigan, Oklahoma, or Pennsylvania that the extra year means....well, nothing??

These are the five states that require the AOA approved rotating internship. If you don't have that year, I understand that you are not eligible for state licensure (in those states). 😎 😎 😎

The year means something if you want to sit for osteopathic specialty boards, for example, I don't think I will be eligible to sit for ABOEM (the EM) specialty boards and if you want to have your residency sanctioned by the AOA. I am sorry that I won't be eligible for the osteo. specialty boards but I don't have an extra year to give, I need to pay off this debt!

For some reason I thought New York was one of those 5 states. Oh well. I have really been leaning toward not wanting to do that extra year of internship. As of right now anyway.

Another question... Is it a big deal not to have your residency sanctioned by the AOA? What benefit does the 'sanctioning' give you? I'm not sure what area I want to go into, but I want to know what my options are as soon as possible so I can make plans and stuff.

dito to kadyra's question-- i may be leaning toward surgury (keeping an open mind 🙂 ) but that is one more year on top of 6!!! Do i really need to be sanctioned??

Kadyra,

I mentioned (the benefits of AOA approval)it in the body of the post to jhug. Let's say, for example you wanted to be certified by the ABOIM (the osteopathic IM board) you wouldn't be eligible to sit for that board exam. You could be certified by the ABIM (allo. spec. boards). I believe that docs must be board certified in their specialty to obtain Medicare reimbursement. You might want to ask others about this. I will be certified probably by the ABEM vs. ABOEM because I didn't do that rotating internship.

jhug, usually many surgery programs start with a transitional year (a year that resembles a rotating internship), so there will be nothing additional required except sending the AOA your paperwork to have them approve it. As long as that transitional year contains the following elements: peds (not a subspecialty), OB, IM, surgery, EM, FP, you should not have difficulties getting it approved. Be cautious that you start with a transitional and not a prelim year which is more focused on IM. Check the AOA website for further details <a href="http://www.aoa-net.org" target="_blank">http://www.aoa-net.org</a> Click on the certification link on that opening page. Hope this helps.

Teds-- you are a wealth of information!!! Thanks a bunch!!! I guess i still have a few years to really be worring about it-- i just like to know before i get myself too deep 🙂

Thanks Ted, that answers a lot of what has been on my mind. I didn't know any of that. I'm also intereste din surgery right now (among other things) so what you told jhug is good to know too!

kad-- i didn't know you were interested in surgery! any field in particular or just general surgery?

•kad-- i didn't know you were interested in surgery! any field in particular or just general surgery?•••••All kinds really... So far anyway. I love ortho, since I got to see a million and a half ortho surgeries when I was a pre-vet. And I got to be a 'dirty nurse' and help since I wasn't scrubbed in. Nothing too exciting, but being a pre-vet was cool because it's not regulated really. I got to clip sutures, squirt sterile water in the field, and the like. But I was definitely hooked on surgery. I like cardiovascular stuff as well. And neurosurgery... General surgery is cool too... So I am thinking about how much of an overachiever I will have to be now if I decide I want something competitive. Although it makes me wonder about family. I want to wait until my residency is over before I have any kids (that's if I'm married by then, of course), and I'm not sure I want to wait until I'm 34 or 35 to do it. It's fortunate I am interested in a lot of fields. Neuro, EM, OB/GYN... I'll have a tough decision when the time comes. What about you? What kind of surgery?

Could anyone tell me where I could find a list of condos or give addresses of condos close to the school? My financee and I are making a trip down to Glendale in June and rather than wasting a lot of time looking, I would rather have a game plan of where to look before we go scout things out.
Any info. is appreciated.....Kadrya or Ted, I'm thinking you two might have some info.
Thanks!!!

Hi Emil,

Sorry on that one, I rent a house down here. I think Kadyra had a list, maybe she'll repost it.

kad-- i'm like you in that i'm keeping an open mind in what i'll do. My pops is a colorectal surgeon and i could really see me doing that with him and eventually taking over the practice. i love kids so pediatric surgery is also something i'm looking in to. General surg. doesn't really call me too much though, i want to sub-specialize for sure. Someone just mentioned an ER-Surgery specialty that i think i would absolutely LOVE!!! We'll see. One thing i am interested in seeing is whether or not we can up the hours in surgery. I think that what we have now is enough-- i would just like the option of taking more-- at MAYO🙂 🙂 🙂

Emil-- All I have is apartment info and some of it is pretty sparse since I had to retype it about 2 months after I had seen them all. I don't have any condo info. If you want, I will pm you the info I have.

jhug-- I think at this point, keeping an open mind is good since most of us have so little exposure to certain fields. Most of my family is rather uneducated (to put it nicely  ), so I don't have any options like you do

Did anyone else get their official AZCOM email account info in the mail today? Now I kind of feel a little more like I am really going to start school next year. I was inspired to make reservations for an apt hunting trip in June (18-20) and reservations for my uhaul. A 10 ft truck is going to cost me $600....ouch.
Anyone else moving from Louisiana to Phoenix and want to share a truck?!

Wow, I havent posted on here for a while, just finished finals though, and now I get to surf all summer before moving to AZ. You already got your email account!? I havent recieved mine yet. I did get my on-campus apartment information though. I will be living in apartment E310. Move in date is Aug. 24th. Can't wait, talk to you all later.

Ryan

I love my dog and cat, but I wish I was living in the student housing because it would make my life at least 10 times less stressful!
You move in on the 24th huh? I guess the letter that said orientation started on Aug 21st must have been wrong. I thought I read somewhere that orientation did start later than the 21st, but I haven't received anything about it since my acceptance letter in October.
Ok...I give up, when does orientation start?

Yeah, I'd love to know when orientation is too. I have heard two different things also, and nothing from the school.

Ryan

Here's a few key dates for MSIs. August 28-30 is orientation. It is mandatory and not showing really makes the admin a bit nervous. Sep 2 is Labor day and there are no classes. Sep 3 is the first day of classes for MS I and IIs.

I was just wondering if anyone has heard anything on a date for the white coat ceremony? I know last year it was supposed to be the first part of september but because of 9/11 the postponed til october.

Hello everyone....

I received my e-mail account as well. It's the first thing I have received from AZCOM in quite a while. I was pretty excited to already have an e-mail address through the school, it made me feel a little more 'legit'! I still haven't received my on-campus housing info. yet. I have talked to Jose(?) a few times and he says that I do have a studio apartment, but that's about all I know. Hopefully i'll receive something soon. As far as white coat, last time I checked with the school they said it would be mid-October.

Sugar, I am looking into U-hauls here in Texas. I have no idea of the price on them yet, though. I'm thinking about renting one of those trailer u-hauls and hitching it to my truck. Louisiana? I thought I had a long drive 🙂 😎 !

Sugar72,
I am heading from good ole LA as well. I'm trying not to have to get a truck, but I don't know if that will be possible. I may be interested in splitting one though. I don't have a lot of stuff to bring. Most of it will fit in the back of my truck. Anyway. When are you heading out? I plan on around August 15th. Let me know your plans. You can email me at [email protected]. I'll be in BR until the first week of July, then I'll be moving home (home is right off of the interstate further west).

I also got my email account as well. Is this the way the school is going to stay in touch with us for financial aid, etc.

•••quote:••• Most of my family is rather uneducated (to put it nicely ), so I don't have any options like you do ••••kad-- watch it pal!! 😀 😀 😀

Titan - I wish I could rent a trailer to hitch to my car. I have a wussy little car that would probably just refuse to go if it had a trailer hooked up to it!

Although I haven't really researched the drive, my husband says it is like 38 hours from here...ouch!

Did anyone try to login to their brand spanking new email accts? My logins kept failing.

Thank you aloha for the date of orientation.

Thank you aloha for the date of orientation.•••••38 hrs.!?!? Good lord. Better pace your self on that one!

My login fails as well when I try to access AZCOM's e-mail server. I sent their support system an e-mail to see what's going on, i'll probably hear back from them tomorrow.

jhug-- Well, I can't lie about my family... especially since some of them seem to think I'm already a doctor, which causes some interesting um... discussions between us  I love them though. At least that is what I keep telling myself 😀 Fortunately, this is my extended family I am talking about, so I don't see them that much. My brothers are much more knowlegeable (I hate that word! I can never spell it!), since I can just have their wives threaten them when I don't like what they have to say 😀

I also got my e-mail log in and password this weekend. I tried it and it didn't work, so I e-mailed the tech support people. I am thinking they just aren't activated yet. At least, that is what I am hoping. And thanks for the dates Aloha Kid!! My family was beginning to think there was something seriously wrong with me since I couldn't tell them exactly when I was starting school!

Well, I still have not recieved my email account 🙁, hopefully it will come sometime this week, but I have been contacted by my MSII big sister. Her name is Asha patel, and she seems really nice, so that cool.

Later days,

Ryan

Ryan,

I bet you'll get your e-mail account info. any day now. That's neat that your big sis already contacted you, I guess each of us will be assigned a big bro/sis. What did she have to say?

Hey everyone, I know it has been a long time since I posted. I have been really busy finishing a project at work and doing some traveling to boot. I do not want to leave anyone out, but I thought it would be cool to have another BBQ, sorry for those that are not close by, but it is an open invitation to all. I am having one Friday night May 31st. Please let me know if you would like to come. Jeremy(sign on name:Maximus) and his wife have committed along with Derek and Hil(sign on name: Daddy D). Most likely this is for people who live in Utah, again not to leave anyone out, just trying to get to know anyone and everyone. Just email me if you would like to attend. &lt;a href="mailto:[email protected]"&gt;Click here to contact me!&lt;/a&gt; . The house is really easy to find and located right by the point of the mountain between salt lake and Utah counties. Please let me know.

Oh and I just got my email account also and I logged in just fine, keep trying!!! Hope everyone is getting ready, can't wait to move right into that Arizona August heat.

Kiley(Hawk)

Titan,
Yup, you were right, just got my email account. My big sister didnt have much to say at this point, she just wanted to introduce herself, and let me know that if I had any questions that I could ask her. It seems like it will be really helpful to have an assigned person to go to that has already been through it, for help with any problems or questions. AZCOM is a really cool school!!

Later days,

Ryan

My e-mail account started working yesterday while I was at work I guess. I haven't checked it yet this morning. I didn't know we were getting big sibling MS2's. Cool 🙂

My email account started working too, it was a little anti-climatic since there was no mail!
How do the big brothers and sisters contact you? I could sure use a big bro/sis to help me out with my apt. search!
I was thinking maybe we should start an AZCOM 2006 thread on the Osteo forum. We could have a little pomp and circumstance about the big move away from the pre-osteo forum!

Hi Ryan!
Just wanted to let you know that I know Asha, and she is a really cool chica! All of the MSII students that I have gotten to know are really extra nice! Can't Wait!

hawk-- thanks for the invitation! meg was just put on strict bed rest so i don't think we will make it but i want to thank you anyway!
so, i wonder which of you will be my big bro/sis 🙂

Jhug, too bad, I hope she will make it out OK through this whole thing. We will miss you, my wife was just asking if you were coming or not. Hope everything goes well. Good luck and let us know if there is anything we can do for you.

Well, its official! I just walked yesterday. Woohoo!!! I am a college grad. For anyone interested, I obtained a degree in physiology and a minor in chemistry. Now for the next two months, its nothing but surf and earn money.

AZCat - Yeah, Asha seems really cool. If she is a representation of how most of the students are at AZCOM, my anticipation for getting out there and starting will be even greater. It is so awesome when you are surrounded by enthusiastic, motivated, and nost importantly, friendly people.

BTW, I am all for the move to the osteopathic forum.

Later days,

Ryan

just wanted to know how the bbq went on friday!!

This is Jason from the AZCOM 2006 classes. I have been going to Midwestern for 2 years now (masters program) and I'm anxious to meet my classmates...

Also, if anyone is looking for a place to stay, check out the housing section.

I HAVE A ROOM FOR RENT!

Thanks,
Jason

By the way, I don't (think) I know Asha...
but I know all of the MS3's and some of the MSI4's and MS2's....

AZCOM is a very friendly place... but each class has it's own character and attributes... it's weird how that works out... Anyways, let's make the Class of 2006 the best yet!!
jason
PS since is graduation time and we all officialy MS1s in my eye, i started a thread in the osteo section...

Hello, I was wondering what scores in the area of mcat and gpa, will make it into AZCOM. If you feel comfortable, could you tell me yours, or any scores you've heard from admitted students. All replies are appreciated. Kimo

I was accepted with a 28 MCAT and an undergrad gpa of 3.18 and grad gpa of 3.57.

Hey Jason... Glad to see you made it on here

I got my on-campus housing assignment.....

I'll be in G207. I don't know if this is good or bad. Anyone?

Nice, you are in the newest buildings. There is more space than the place I used to live in (C).

P.S. Know anyone needing furniture? I've got relatively new stuff to unload because I've got to move to NY soon. If you know of anyone, send me a p.m. thanks. Good luck! 😎 😎 😎

Kimosabe - GPA 3.51 (science 3.8), MCAT 31S
I am 30 and have been working full time for years. I don't have any volunteer experience since college. Good Luck!
