***AZCOM Class of 2011***

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Woo Hoo!! Hi:d

Just thought I'd get this one going since no one else is. I hope to see a lot more participation here in the coming months. 😀

IT IS ABOUT TIME SOMEBODY START IT. ANYWAY I AM STILL WAITING TO HEAR FROM AZCOM (HOPEFULLY THIS WEEK)

Yeah, me too! I hope to hear this week...maybe tomorrow??

I feel like calling them now but I guess I will wait until tomorrow.

Has anyone else sent in their deposit and committed to going to AZCOM?😀

I have committed to going to AZCOM. Pretty excited about it! Cannot beat the sunshine there and everyone seemed pretty laid back. I plan on living on campus so that it might be easier to meet everyone in the first year.
Thanks for starting up our class thread!

I'm definitely committed and also living on campus for at least the first year. I'm definitely excited and already sick of sitting around and waiting for school to start, but I guess I should enjoy it while I can. Everyone seems laid back and helpful (from my limited experience) so hopefully we can all get together sometime in ealry/mid August.

I called admission office today and they told me that adcom is meeting today. Admissions office will receive result on Monday and we can call on Tuesday to find out the outcome.

Good luck! This school is awesome! 😀

Was accepted to AZCOM but not sure where I'm going yet.

Waiting to hear from three TX schools which start telling people next Thursday and also from CCOM they say by Thanksgiving.

Just wanted to say Hi!

So, I checked interact now just a few minutes ago and there was no update. I am assuming from your info that the decision should be up on Monday or Tuesday, right? What do you think?
I would rather check it online then have to hear possible bad news on the phone. 😳

I called yesterday and found out the good news! I'm SO happy! But also nervous because now I have to start making decisions!

I've had 4 out of 7 interviews so far and AZCOM is at the top of my list at the moment. I just really felt good there; loved the fact that we can stay in Phoenix for rotations if we choose to, but also do rural/international rotations; professors seem approachable; board scores; campus and facilities; etc. Also, my S.O. could get his master's down the street at ASU-Glendale, which is a huge bonus!

The only possible downside, which I also believe is a plus depending on how you look at it - those Monday exams! But there's more chances to redeem yourself that way, right? 🙂

Congrat Sarikate👍
Anybody else called or heard back from AZCOM? I Would email but I just don't want to get any bad news by email. I have enough this week with bad lucks.

Those Monday tests get old...but they do force you to keep up with the material. You can pretty much say goodbye to your weekends--not to discourage you. As a first year, I think we're getting a good education and there must be something right about the program as we have the highest board pass rate of the D.O. schools and have great placement for our graduates.

Congrats on getting in to you all. I don't think you'll be disappointed with this school. PM me if you have questions and I can try to find answers for you.

You can count me in too 🙂 After my interview there I checked out those apartments across the street - San Lagos - and they let me in to see one. They are POSH! Might live there because they'll take my cats 🙂 I'll post some pictures soon...

I agree completely about the Monday exams. It makes for a brutal academic schedule (especially when you get Monday AND Friday exams), but it really makes sure you don't slack off. Another bonus about the frequent exams and the quarter system is that AZCOM students get more vacation time than many other med schools (MD and DO). After last quarter, you wouldn't believe how nice these two weeks off are.... If anyone has any questions feel free to PM me.

I hope to get to meet you and your kitty cats! My cat is about 15 yrs old and his name is Garfield! 🙂

I love older cats - especially ones that eat lasagna 🙂 . I adopted both of mine, Sarge and Jarn Jarn, when they were adults. They are maniacal. Provide lots of entertainment.

Where are all of you from?

Just outside of Denver in Golden, CO. Home of Coors👍

I also adopted mine when he was about one yr old. I found him nearby the dumpster on a cold Kansas winter night after I got off work. He is with me ever since and it has been 15 yrs already. He is my buddy! I’ll give him my kidney if he ever needs one(not sure if the xenotransplant works on feline🙄 ). I live in Phoenix now!

Hi everyone,

Excited to report that I will also be joining you at AZCOM!

The school itself looks phenomenal and you can't beat the location. I will be moving to Scottsdale at least a week prior to orientation. We'll all have to meet up for dinner sometime.

Anyone doing anything fun before then?
Ie. I plan on taking 2-3 months to backpack Europe or travel around the world.

Congratualtions!! I will be coming there a week early too. I am planning to quit my job in June, travel around world and start medical school. By the way namaste!!

How's it going everybody?? Just wanted to say congrats and welcome to AZCOM. I'm into my 2nd year now and am very happy with my decision to come here. For those of you who are gonna take it easy this summer and go travel, that's an awesome way to go...highly recommend it. Happy to answer any questions..i don't check studentdoc as much anymore these days so hit up my email address. See you all next fall...

I'm going to quit my job in June, probably. I'm still figuring out how to move two people and two cats from Alaska to Arizona (about 4,000 miles) on the smallest budget possible in a car that doesn't like the heat (i.e., it will start when the temp is 30 below zero, but not when it's 75, which is about the extent of the "heat waves" up here).

Great!

Interact Now was updated last night and there was short clip from the Dean of the Midwestern University welcoming all of us.

Most excellent! Have you created your itinerary yet?

That's quite a road trip. Good luck!

Facebook has Midwestern University, Glendale AZ group and you guys are welcome to join.

Does anyone know how large our class is going to be?

I heard it was expanding from something like 130 to 250? Is that true?

I vaguely remember the student tour guide mentioning that the class size was getting expanded too... can anyone else confirm this?

Okay, got an answer from pre-osteo...looks like the c/o 2012 will be the one expanding to something over 200 (!). Our class will be ~150. That seems much more manageable to me. How will they accommodate an over 25% increase in students, I'm wondering?

Yeah, in order to accomodate a class of more than 200 D.O. students they have to expand the anatomy lab, micro lab, OMM lab, hire more faculty, as well as build bigger lecture halls because you have to remember the Podiatry students take classes with the med students as well. If those changes aren't adequately made, I feel bad for the class of 2012 and beyond. Not only that, there will be two more med schools in the valley (A.T Still and U of A) creating more competition for rotation slots. But I can't imagine the administration wouldn't take all of these things into consideration......

Yeah this would be completely asinine. That was one of the things that drew me to AZCOM. With the ever increasing class sizes, it seemed like AZCOM had a nice ration of facilities to students, but what are you going to do? Hopefully admin will vote against it, but when more money is involved it's hard to tell....

hey there,

The time to turn in my deposit is getting closer and I still haven't made a decision. I have narrowed it down to KCOM and AZCOM, but the clinical rotation thing is still holding me back from Arizona. I have read all of the posts I can read. Do any of you know anyone personally who is satisfied with the changes they have made? Just trying to get as much info as I can. Thanks!

I'm a first year, so I don't have first hand experience with the rotations at AZCOM, but I have heard positive things about them. Several rotations have opened up in Phoenix and it is possible to do all your rotations here. I met a third year a few weeks ago that told me he's been very happy with his rotations and it sounds like most of his classmates are as well. This year they changed how many away rotations you can do away from Phoenix during 3rd year and I think we have to do 80% of them here...apparently people that did their core rotations in Phoenix scored better on the exams at the end of their rotations.
This was also a concern of mine in making my decision to attend AZCOM last year, but I was told by many students that people make a bigger deal about the rotations than is necessary.
Hopefully an M2 or M3 will read this and add their feedback.
Good luck with your decision.

Sometimes I sit here in Alaska, where six inches of snow just dumped on top of the six inches we already have, and where the temperatures plummet below zero on a regular basis, and think...

I REALLY wouldn't mind if school started, oh, next week.

I am trying to enjoy myself, though.

Basically, this was a very protracted bump.

I plan on living on campus. When should I submit my application?

I was wondering the same thing so I called and talked to housing and they said they would send out applications in March. They did say that calling in Feb. would be a good idea to ask them what was going on. So basically it's just a waiting game for a while.

Off topic...but I was wondering if any current students knew which books are "must haves" as my grandparents are set on buying me a book or two for Christmas and I don't want them getting something I don't need...any suggestions?

Thanks 👍

No worries. Warm, sunny days lie ahead!

We just got a snow storm in Chicago, but it probably pales to your weather.

You could always arrive in AZ a bit early...but by that time in the (hot summer) season you may miss the snow! Now, however, would be a good time to go. I'm planing to spend some time there Dec 14-18th to get a feel for the home, do some hiking, biking and enjoy the sun.
Will anyone else be there at that time?

That'll be nice to head down there...let us know all the goods 🙂 I spent two days in the area for the interview, so had a pretty good look around. My fiance downloaded a map of Glendale, which shows running trails/parks/etc. If I'd had time I would have gone to see the Grand Canyon! Or the desert...or anywhere outside the city...

I think we're planning on heading that way in June, just after Adam's teaching gig winds up. It's going to be so ridiculously hot, but we're going to need jobs for the summer and want to get the move out of the way.

Hey everybody,

I'm holding on to acceptances from AZCOM and CCOM and still waiting to hear from Drexel, while my deposit date is quickly approaching. I am pretty sure my money will be going to AZCOM, it just seems like the right fit for me and my wife. I will probably be seeing all you next August!

Congratulations on your acceptances, DocFox! Now you just have to decide whether you want to live in windy, rainy Chicago or sunshiney Arizona. Man...that's a tough choice...🙂

Hey DocFox.... I'm with Sarikate, no question!

I am readily leaving Chicago to go to AZ, and I was also accepted to both campuses. AZCOM has the whole package: superior education (as evidenced by their students' high scores on all standarized DO exams), new facilities, climate to die for, and much more flexibility for your rotation sites. CCOM's rotation sites are basicly limited to the Chicagoland area.

To be more objective:
Ask yourself, where do you want to be after med school? What are your long term goals and how does each school align with those? Where was the best fit? Trust your instinct.
