***AZCOM Class of 2011***

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Finally, I went with Northstar as well after another 4th year mentioned it. I was getting worried after everyone else said they just went with the sallie mae lender, its nice to hear some more positive feedback. It definantly looks like the best lending set up that I could find.

Just wondering if anyone knows what kind of student housing is left at AZCOM. I called yesterday and they said that the one-bedroom apartments with the den are probably the only apartments left. I was kind of hoping for a studio. Does anyone have any idea what's left? Any info from medical students currently attending AZCOM that know how quickly studio apartments go would be helpful. thanks!

P.S. Congrats to the class of '07...I'm excited to meet all my new colleagues.

Congrats and welcome to the class of '07.

I am an MS4 and have just put my townhouse on the market. The MLS# is 2731984. It is a great little house, only 4 miles from the school. There is a bikepath and sidewalk almost the entire way to the school so you could easily bike if you wanted to. There are two bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. Each bedroom upstairs has its own adjoining bathroom. There is a community pool and grass area. it has been a really nice place for my family and I to live while I have been in school. The way prices have been going in phoenix, unless you can put a lot of money down students are pretty much priced out of the housing market. This is a nice affordable place close to campus and is a great opportunity to build some equity.
happy house hunting!

PS.
it'll be on realtor.com later tonight. it takes a little while for realtor.com to pick up all the new listings. you can also go to azparadiserealty.com and click on OUR LISTINGS. the list by MLS# and mine should be on the top.

hahaa, i just got my free pair of scrubs in the mail from AZCOM!!!! this is awesome, i feel special lol!! anyways, when do you guys think we should start lookin for a place to live?? and do apts have roommate finding services??

To all of the AZCOM class of '07 congrats on matching and it would be cool if all of you on SDN could post where you matched. I've been on the dean's office website but it doesn't look like the '07 list has been put up yet. Word on the street is that there have been some pretty impressive matches this year.

For any of you in the 2011 class wondering how the situation with rotations is now at AZCOM, I just got my rotation assignments this past Friday. I was very happy with my rotations and will only be out of state for two of them.

I will be doing 2 IM's (core and elective) hospital based (Botsford General in MI and Providence St. Vincents in Portland, OR)

2 Family medicine with preceptors and 1 family/omm with preceptor.

Cardiology with a preceptor I hear is really good.

Peds and psychiatry at Maricopa medical center.

OB/GYN at Banner Desert Hospital

Surgery department based rotation at a yet to be assigned hospital.

My rural rotation will be in Sierra Vista, AZ (east of Tuscon) for cardiology at the hospital there.

Note that this may change meaning that if a better opportunity comes around for any rotation, I can cancel and switch. Feel free to PM me with any other questions about setting up rotations. Now I have to get some sleep for my pharm exam tomorrow morning.....antibiotics...yah!

AZCOM Adds New Rotations, Residencies, and Alumni Programs
This entry was posted on 3/29/2007 6:49 PM and is filed under Academics,Campus Events,Alumni,Glendale Campus.

Midwestern University continues to establish a strong presence in the Phoenix valley. We are now truly well known in the health care, legislative, academic, and corporate communities. Our programs continue to expand and improve; our students are able to pursue more clinical opportunities; and our alumni are establishing a reputation for excellence in their careers. I am pleased to report on three new initiatives in this blog entry to highlight the continued growth and development of the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Last week, Phoenix Children's Hospital announced that students from AZCOM will now be able to secure four-week clerkship rotations in inpatient pediatrics. This is one of several new hospital rotations that are available to AZCOM third- and fourth-year students.

AZCOM will begin its new internal medicine residency in Sierra Vista, AZ, this July. This new residency program is the result of a unique partnership between the University and the federal government, which is providing start-up funding to bring postgraduate medical education to this rural community. MWU is looking to create more residency opportunities throughout Arizona, including our current program in Kingman.

Finally, a new alumni roundtable event was initiated last evening at our Glendale Campus. AZCOM has graduated seven classes since its founding in 1996 (class of 2000 to 2006). Ten AZCOM alumni came back to campus to talk to current students about residency programs and starting their practices. The roundtable format providing students with the opportunity to ask questions of the alumni and get solid advice from young physicians about their experiences and successes. In a recent survey of AZCOM alumni, of 135 respondents, 24% have published since graduation; 16% are involved in teaching; 7% are involved in research; 6% were chief residents; and 6% earned awards as intern or resident of the year. Clearly, AZCOM alumni are getting great residency positions and are establishing themselves in their profession at an early point in their careers.

We are excited about the strides we have made at our Glendale Campus. While the Administration has worked very diligently to establish our strong reputation, our students and alumni have made an impressive impact on the community. Despite the geographic discrepancy, Midwestern University has truly made a name for itself in the Southwest.

I was at the roundtable with the alumni the other night...It was great to hear from alumni and the new dean, Dr. Kemper. According the Dr. Kemper there will be a lot of new rotations added in the next year or so and said that there will be enough hospital-based IM rotations for my entire class.

Anyway, just another reason to be excited about going to AZCOM!

I was at the round table discussion as well and I thought the alumni attending had alot of great things to say. All seemed to be very happy where they were and about their education at AZCOM as well. Talking with them definately got me that much more excited about starting rotations 😀

hahaa, i just got my free pair of scrubs in the mail from AZCOM!!!! this is awesome, i feel special lol!!

🙁 🙁
I never received the free scrubs thing in the mail.

Isn't it funny how receiving a free pair of 30$ scrubs makes you feel so much better about $39,000 a year?

It would sure make me feel better.

hahah seriously, i was soo excited when i got my pair. ITs cool it has MWU logo on it and everything =D jus heard that western's tuition increased to 39,000 also, soo we are not alone on the high tuition. i am sooooo glad the rotations are improving by leaps and bounds even as we speak. Looks like AZCOM has developed into a fine program (not that it wasnt already, jus to shut down the rest of the whinners out there =P), soooo excited to start in the fall and to meet all my new friends and study buddies ....i love SDN, lol

Don't Worry I never received any either. Could we still be getting them??

Also, has anyone who mailed in an application heard from the housing department? What have they said? I have not heard anything yet.

Thanks.......🙂

I called the housing office a few days ago about the housing applications and they said they would be working on the applications this coming week and to call back then.

awww why do you say that???

The night before the second anatomy exam you'll know what I mean.... Before I started my first year some upperclassmen said the same thing and I was like whatever, but now I understand. Aside from the academic brutality you'll have a great time and enjoy many after exam happy hours 😀

=D thats what i like to hear!! haha, i have a couple friends in in their first year both DO and MD. They all tell me the amount of work i will have to do is almost unbearable, but they all say you come to terms with it after a couple smacks in the face by brutal exams, haha. Hope i have what it takes to get through it 👍

Before I started my first year some upperclassmen said the same thing and I was like whatever, but now I understand.

When a first year gives you advice about first year, you are like whatever....then you understand. When you are a first year and and a second year gives you advice, you're like "whatever, that won't happen to me"....then at the end of second year, you understand. Medical school is such a different experience, it's just too hard to explain but rather has to be just...experienced.

You can make it, just don't give up on yourself or your abilities.

Well said! 😀

They just posted the match list today if you guys are interested--I know I was about a year ago. You can find it through mwunet.midwestern.edu and clicking on the Dean's Office under AZCOM. Once you're on the Dean's page, I think it's under match process.

A very solid match this year....a bit improved over last year. 👍

what are the demographics like at AZCOM.

we need to wake this thread up!

Time's getting short. Up here in New England it's sunny and 49 today. Sure am gonna miss sub-80 temps when we move to Glendale!

Has anyone heard anything from AZCOM regarding housing? We've applied for a 2-bed, but given the huge waitlist and relatively small units, we're going to probably end up at San Lagos across the street, which seems to be the default place to live. Maybe Midwestern should just buy San Lagos and designate the whole thing as extended on-campus housing? And lower the price a bit, of course.

Presently I'm planning to drive from Massachusetts to Arizona around August 1, over 3 days, and my wife and daughter will fly out later on. I've heard it gets up to 115 that time of year. I'm a little worried that my tires will melt when I stop for gas. Is it crazy to do this? Maybe I should have the car shipped instead. Or else put a 200 lb block of dry ice in the trailer to keep my stuff from charbroiling.

My other idea was to secretly sell my Forester, fly to Phoenix and buy another one exactly the same color (but, hopefully, with fewer dents), and no one will be the wiser.

Hey, I also plan on moving out to AZ in early August. I'm moving from PA and I'm totally confused on how to get out to AZ. The idea of selling everything and buying everything over again once in Phoenix is starting to become a serious possibility. The drive across the country could be fun but I feel that it would take forever and cost more in gas $$ than an airline ticket for sure.

Those 100's sound bad but its been so cold recently in the northeast I won't complain! Can't wait to just move and get this whole process over with...

Your tires will not melt but you may!!! Whatever you do, make sure you have 5 gallons of water in your trunk (for you and your radiator). The highways here look like bone yards during the Summer from all the broken down cars. Also, if you can I would try to drive through the mountains after 6pm if you have a trailer to avoid the heat stress on your engine.

I'm feeling the same way and I'm only driving from Texas. Then I think about how much it would cost to buy a couch alone and think twice. So unless someone knows where to buy some cheap furniture...melted tires it is!

I was trying to get out there before it got too hot but it's gotten pushed back to early June so it probably won't be much cooler then. Definitely not looking forward to the drive out there form New Jersey with a puppy in the car! I was thinking that I was crazy to drive so it's nice to hear that everyone else is doing the same.

I think I've got all of ya beat - I'm coming from Alaska in mid-July! Holy cow. I am freakin' out. We're taking 18 days for 4,000 miles (give or take). I'm looking forward to the scenery, but I know that I'm going to be near a nervous breakdown by the time we get to, say, Montana.

We are driving my beat-up 1992 Saab that doesn't like to start in weather over 75 degrees. Yeah...really smart! 🙂

I'm excited to meet all of you. Party in San Lagos, second weekend in August!

Wow the drive I made from Oregon where I bought my parent's car to Colorado to pick up my things and then to the Phoenix area doesn't sound so bad now. At least not compared to what you guys and gals will be doing in August! The day I arrived the temp was like 115 and my dad and I had to move my stuff from the trailer we were pulling to the house I moved into. Believe me I was ready for my first night out in Scottsdale after that!

Does anyone know when the financial aid award letters are released?

Hey everyone. I am so freaking exited that there are so many east coasters coming out.👍 I am so bright I going to be making the drive twice, once from DC in July and another from New Hampshire in August. Awesome! Although it is no 4000k miles, that’s just impressive hands down.

Holy mackerel. Why twice?

My wife and I bought a house out in Peoria which is going to be done in June. We are going to move all our crap and my car out in July and get all set up. Then we are going back to DC and then driving up to a lake in New Hampshire for the rest of July and August. Then on to phoenix for the second time (my wife is still trying to get out of this one). If you can not tell, I am a big fan of the “quite your job and do nothing the summer before medical school” theory.

I am sooo with you there!!!!

I am going to try and set it up so the last month of the summer I have absolutely nothing to do! I even plan on watching some soap operas (just so that I can say that I did).

Yeah with gas being so expensive...I really want to fly, especially since it's only $98 round trip from Denver...who knows maybe I will sell everything.

The drive is only ~13 hrs and I'm dreading it. 😱 I guess it's nothing compared to some of you (esp Sarikate).

Well I will be moving August 1st...so until then drive safe everyone and get ready to party! 😀

Hey where in CO are you from? I lived in Boulder for 7 years and graduated from CU. Oh the memories.......

i was a resident assistant in college for three years and had to load, unload, and lug my crap back to phoenix every summer when the dorms closed so let me pass on some survival tips: wait to unload your car until after the sun sets or do it before 9 or 10-ish in the morning. for serious. i also suggest you keep your swim suit handy so you can jump in the pool between loads. and like someone else said--for the trip, keep a few gallons of water in your trunk--just in case. oh and bring a dish to fill water for your dog and make sure you take him out of the car anytime you turn the AC off (the car gets super hot super fast).

i wish you'd all get here already 😎

This sounds like really good advice. I still remember when I got out of the car, it was crazy, I had never felt weather so "warm". It was like a sauna...but outside.

And you never get used to it. I have lived here all my life and each summer I swear it feels like the hottest summer ever - but before you know it, it is October and life is great!

I grew up in desert without aircondition but I have been living in US for past eight year. Hopefully it won't be too hard for me to readjusted to hot climate.

I live in Golden now...just down the road from Boulder, as I'm sure you know. 😉

I graduated from CSU and partied at CU some. Boulder is a beautiful town and even though I went to CSU I still root for CU...as long as their not playing CSU. 🙂

BTW, what year did you graduate?

You will probably feel right at home.

The only thing I still have to get used to during the summer is getting into my car when it is 190 degrees inside because it baked in the sun all day. 🙁

For all those who have never lived in Arizona though, it is actually a very nice place to live. It is sunny and very beautiful all throughout fall, winter and spring.
This week has been 80 degrees, breezy and full of sun!

Anyone get their financial aid award letters yet? I thought they were sent out the 15th.

Anyone get their financial aid award letters yet? I thought they were sent out the 15th.

I read that same post too about award letters being sent april 15. i did however contact the fin aid office and what they told me was ambiguous in nature. they said award letters will be sent no later than 30 days prior to the start of the fall qtr. in addition, fin aid disbursement ie give me my money, won't happen until after the first week of school. sooooooooooo no extravagant gifts or vacations with fin aid money before school starts. sorry guys. see you guys in 4-5 months in the scorching HEAT

Anyone get their financial aid award letters yet? I thought they were sent out the 15th.

Check the online.midwestern.edu site and login with your student number and password.

I was wondering why I have not received my letter also. I emailed them today, and they gave me an ambiguous response that it would be emailed to my midwestern email address. No date was given in the email.

It does say in the welcome letter "Financial Aid Award Letter notifications will be sent to you via your MWU email account commencing April 15, 2007". Someone at the financial aid office told me over the phone that they will send them to people who filed before the priority date on april 15th, but I guess she was wrong.
