AZCOM Class of 2012 Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I had a dream last night we made it to page 8

Who's afraid of scorpions...anybody? anybody?

First of all, I think it's hilarious that this thread made it into your dreams.
A while back I wanted to start a thread entitled, "You know you've spent way too much time on SDN when...."

Oh, and I'm not looking forward to the scorpions. Or the rattlesnakes.

PS: we made it to page 8!!!

I've been getting really excited reading the Orientation schedule. If you haven't read it yet, you need to! (It's located on the MWU intranet.) It also makes waiting torture!

Also, has anyone found MWU or AZCOM paraphernalia online? I looked in the bookstore online but all I could find were a couple of beanies. I wanted to get an MWU Medicine sweatshirt or something. Maybe they have those at the bookstore on campus?
they do

Enjoy it now b/c after the first hour or so of orientation you'll want to kill yourself. Enjoy every minute of your summer. By the time you get to where we are you will GLADLY give anything to quit now.

Peace

P.S. I hate finals

HAH! I remember being so excited to start last year. I couldn't wait for the summer to fly by so I could be a med student! I am planning on having a psychotic breakdown when this summer comes to an end.

For the incoming students: Don't let our dismal, final exam week, woe-is-me ranting get to you. AZCOM is a great school and you get to learn a lot of really amazing things - unfortunately the exam schedule will erode your soul and leave you as a socially inept shell of a person who cannot hold a non-medically related conversation because your existence for the past 9 months has revolved around medicine. Other than that, its a blast!

Wait, how is that any different than who we were before we started this endeavor?

No mam'/sir, but there are 2nd year students that take OMM teaching assistant as an elective...they help you during your 1st year OMM class. Just to be clear, we also take OMM as a class, as often as the 1st years.

Well, you see I have begun to overload my brain capacity with minutiae. It has subsequently resulted in the loss of cherished childhood memories and the ability to remember names. I fear that prosopagnosia will befall me before the end of the week.

Umm do you mean touché?

While that is sad to hear, I may have developed some discoordinate ataxia from this week.

Hey I was wondering if you found a roomate or if you know of anyone else that may need one for this fall. Im comin from michigan and I wanted to live near school with some fun people! I saw San Lagos and San Prado and I liked those apts. Let me know if you are still looking for apts!

Hey guys,
I'm new to SDN, but have been accepted and planning on going to AZCOM for a couple months! I was just reading some of the posts and it sounds like we're going to have a fun class! Anyway, I'm searching for a place to live, somewhere relatively cheap (for a one-bedroom) but kind of close to the school too (less than 5 miles). Anyone find anything good?

Hey BYU 2008,
The owner of the house I'm staying in is a realtor. He specializes in housing around the school. He's been scoping out Surprise and El Mirage. He says there are some incredible deals out there. He's also a BYU alum. Here's his cell # Doug 480 628-2426. Good luck!

Hey, we used Doug as our realtor too and just bought a house in Glendale. He was great! Use him!

Speaking of housing, anyone else living on campus?

I have a house a half mile north of campus and am looking for one more roomie if any of you are interested. my email is [email protected]

also there is a facebook group for the class of 2012. Its named AZCOM class of 2012

Anyone know a landlord that allows pets? I have two German Shepherds and even though I love them to death they making find a place to live difficult.

I had the same problem. Well, except with a cat. I finally just made the tough call to leave my furry friend behind. Hopefully only for the first year though.

UNECOM had an article in one of their newsletters explaining how to cook and eat a scorpion, safely. I'd like to try that someday.

Good luck with that, I have a Great Pyrenees and it was very difficult to find housing that would take her. This city is not dog friendly, plus won't you have breed restriction problems? If you want to bring them, your best bet is to fork over a little extra and rent a house. There are tons around here to rent, you just gotta look (or find a realtor willing to help). Good luck!

Just wanted to say hello to all my future fellow classmates . . . can't wait to move to AZ . . . Also looking for a place to live and coming from Ohio doesn't make the find easier . . . Anyway wishing all a great day!🙂

Hi - Just wanted to say congrats to all you who will be part of the class of 2012. I'm just finishing my second year (last final today!!!) and have been happy with my education at AZCOM. Like any school, there are things I wish were different but overall I've been very happy.
When I came to AZCOM I was nervous about the quality of rotations, but I think a lot has changed over the past two or three years. We just got our schedules for 3rd year two weeks ago and I'm very pleased with the rotations that I got. Most of them are ward based here in Phoenix with the exception of two of my family medicine rotations. I think most of my classmates are also happy about the rotations that they got.
Please PM me if you have any questions about AZCOM!

Yeah, the fact they are German Shepherds makes it twice as difficult (even though they are well trained). They just have a bad rep. You have a beautiful dog btw. I got in touch with a realtor yesterday and she was quite helpful. I just need fly back to the area and look at some of the houses.

Hey, thanks for sharing this. I'm curious--how much input do students have in determining their rotations? Are our schedules pretty much determined for us or do we pick and choose?

i didnt want to ruin ur Thailand thunder.

just mainly going to see family, have a wedding (NOT MINE)
and tour around a little. just 2 short weeks, then i gotta go back to work 👎
oh well.
ps. you leave super soon! i'll shoot u an email later.

i put a deposit down on a 1 bed apartment in country gables. it is 2.3 miles south of campus, fully gated you get your own assigned space and it is 600/month. it isn't anything fancy, but i just need a place to lay my weery head at night. there is another right beside called sagewood for the same price basically, but the rooms didn't look as nice, it wasnt gated, and you had to pay extra for a parking space. the management staff at both places seemed very nice. oh and there is a bus stop directly across from country gables that goes to the campus intersection. good luck!!

Barely joining the thread, but I've been reading it for awhile! I can't wait to start school, even though 3rd year students post words of warning. I am starting to look for housing to buy, any suggestions?

have they finished interviews yet? I can't believe I had mine in october.

yup. october. its been a long time since i interviewed too. can't wait for this to get started.

For those of you who are not on our facebook group. I have decided to put up a website for the Class of 2012 to communicate (via forums), distribute notes / lectures (via podcast), and a general point for information about our class specifically. Below is more information regarding the setup.

The website address is: http://www.azcom2012.com/

What has been setup:

-Main Content Website
-Limit Registration To Midwestern Students Only
-Discussion Forums (click Forums)
-Event Calendar (registered users can add their own events to the calendar)
-Podcasting Ability

Fellow Medical Students, please register your website account with your azwebmail.midwestern.edu email, once registered, you have to login to your email account because the website will send you a confirmation email. Once you click the activation link in the email your account is setup and ready to be used to add events to the calendar and full access to the discussion forums.

Please head over there as soon as you can to be on board with the rest of us before we become overwhelmed with medical school. I would've setup a listserv as well for mass email communication, but I am told MWU will do that for us. So I won't bother with that step.

Hey ec227:
Contact my landlord/realtor. He knows the area and has already helped two incoming students buy houses. He's awesome. 480 628-2426. Best of luck!

Hi new friends!
I'm an upcoming MS1 looking to live at the luxurious San Lagos apartments this fall and am on the prowl for a delightful person with whom to share an apartment. PM me if at all interested or if u can offer any advice on finding an awesome off-campus roomy or just to say hi.

:barf: <--me every weekend. (JUST KIDDING! i'm a good kid. honest.)

just got a letter for the complimentary MWU scrubs. 🙂 Nice.

They are sending out complimentary scrubs?!? I wish I would have waited a few more days before withdrawing. Losing my $1K deposit wouldn't have felt as bad if I could have gotten a pair of scrubs out of it! Oh well, I'm sure some lucky guy/girl on the waitlist will enjoy them.

Hey everyone! Counting down the days till' I move down to AZ (despite not having a place to live/roommate, yet). Since I am planning my future, aka this fall, I was wondering what to do about the month of December. In the beginning of Dec., we have our white coat ceremony for the class of 2012. I went to UW-Madison for undergrad and have friends who went to med school there. The white coat ceremony was a big deal with friends and family coming to celebrate with the students. So, I was wondering if family comes to the white coat ceremony in Dec. even though we have classes that week? Also, with winter break that same month, I am positive that I will be flying home for the holidays. Therefore, both myself and my family want to book flights far in advance. Any suggestions/comments about the ceremony and/or flights home for vacation periods?
Thanks!

I would book a flight for your family. I would say the majority of people's parents came out for the ceremony this past year. My parents came and were very happy they did!

i can finally participate in this thread, i just received my acceptance letter, yippie!! 😀 the complimentary scrub is sweet!

i am totally pysched, but i also have some questions. this is going to sound silly to you guys, but how exactly can I put in a request for for the scrub?! I went to the site provided on the letter, but connecting to pretty much all of the links on the intranet requires logging on and i didn't see the link for the scrubs. how can i register for the site? please help 🙁

there aren't any other instructions on the letter except the scrubs thing. I am thinking that they are probably going to send me a package for things like the deposit and immunization later on, am i right? or should i call them to let them know that i am accepting the offer and then they will send me the package?

i am so sorry if i am sounding like an idiot, i am feeling kinda like one now. i am so excited right now, i can even think straight 😛 so much to do, so little time!

The steps you need to take will be done at : http://online.midwestern.edu and use your student id and password (which will be sent to you via snail mail) and it will have all the steps (shots, finan aid, etc)... 🙂 Congrats on the acceptance, join us at http://www.azcom2012.com once you get your midwestern email.

Hey Guys,
I have been researching extensively on here and on apartmentratings.com about the aparments within 5 miles of the school. I have read some awful things about sage stone, camden towne center, and meadow glen. Are these places significantly worse than San Lagos, and San Padro? Is it worth the extra money to rent at these places? Thanks everyone!!

HillMill- I was wondering the same thing. I'd really like to get a one bedroom, but I'm not sure I'm ready to fork it out for San Lagos and San Padro. I'm going to go to Phoenix in June to check it out. I'll let you know if I find out anything.

Also, any recommendations on moving companies? I'm going to be moving from Washington DC and I'm paranoid about moving scams. Its probably just because I've never used a moving company, but if I got a recommendation, it would make me feel better!

Thanks for the response asmusseh!
I am trying to avoid making a trip just to sign a lease, but the only places I feel comfortable signing a lease without seeing are San Lagos and Padro. I feel the same about not wanting to overpay, but then again I don't want scorpions or a filthy apartment. I look forward to hearing what you find out!
As far as moving companies, my husband did that research and we decided to do it ourselves with a Penske truck. He was advised numerous times though to only go with a moving company that offers to come to your house prior and do an estimate and what not. This is apparently a good way to see if they are reliable. The internet companies can be a scam, so definitely be on the lookout! Good luck.
