AZCOM Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've talked about it a few times in this forum, but basically it's not the end of the world. That status is usually related to a gpa or MCAT issue, so if that happens to also be true in your case, just keep the school primarily posted with new grades and scores, but also feel free to keep them informed about research, publications, etc. The more proactive you are, the better your chances. At least one of the current MS1s who sometimes frequents the forums had that status at some point last cycle too, and it definitely worked out for them.

Is it strictly a GPA or MCAT issue? I interviewed already at CCOM (will find out this thursday hopefully... fingers crossed), but was placed on hold here, although I did submit my AZCOM application a little bit later. My GPA is 3.76 non science and about 3.6 science. 27 MCAT.. not that great but is it hold worthy?

You're definitely the first person I've heard of receiving this status without having one or the other be an issue, as your stats seem pretty solid (unless you had something like a 15-7-5 MCAT) by AZCOM standards (not to mention I've always been under the impression that CCOM was harder to get an interview at).

Thanks for the input. Well this was my second MCAT.. bombed the physics section .. 7ps-10vr-10bs. Old mcat was 9-9-8. Maybe it was the new 7 in physical sciences... although CCOM didn't seem to mind lol.

Also, I was complete at CCOM on 7/20, but not until 9/15 for AZCOM. That was also probably a mistake on my part, considering both essays were nearly identical... I should have just submitted them around the same time.

I don't really see the 7 being a hindrance. Your case has me completely baffled. Best advice is to just keep them updated with stuff going on academically and EC-ly, then maybe send in a letter of interest in awhile if you've still not heard any positive news.

Do you have many ECs? Or perhaps there was something in your secondary that they began to question? I received my interview invite the day after my file was completed (Oct 14th). My GPA is low (3.4 for my bachelor, 2.9 for all my undergrad transcripts combined). 1st mcat: 26Q, 2nd mcat: 31Q. But I have ton of volunteer and life experiences plus research.

I would agree here. That is strange.😕

If someone who was schedule to interview during December and would like to give it away because you are withdrawing from AZCOM for this cycle, can you PM me? I would love to interview on December instead of January. Thanks.

Can you give me a time frame of when they might go and look at the waitlist or how often I should check the portal

they should call you if they are taking you off the waitlist, last year they took someone on the first day of orientation.

IIRC they may take some qualified applicants off the waitlist after the first deposit is due in december or whatever it is but it would be a select few

How long after getting the acceptance did you guys receive your packet in the mail? Still waiting for mine... would really like to get L.A. rotation sites so I need to be on top of submitting the choices sheet 😀

DrWily, it took me about two weeks to receive my letter.

Also, I just got my rotation site assignment. Got LA!

Does anybody know how many seats have been offered? How common is it to get the "application hold for a possible interview" status. Twice with this school. Is that like telling some on the non-pretty side that “they have nice eyes?” Have an interview at ATSU with previous waitlists from TUCA, TUNV and UMDNJ. Is this school big on anything [beyond] that I may not know about or is there something I should do or look out for?

Thanks.

waitlisted 9/27/2011

found out my interview didn't go so well

I'm just guessing but I think both Midwesterns like to see higher MCAT scores. I think a solid MCAT score will overcome a lower GPA. Its just my observation.

Good MCAT score may overcome low GPA...but certainly not a bad interview 😴

Not necessarily true. While I definitely fall into that category, the stats overall say that you need solid scores all around. I'm definitely an anomaly. I know many people in my class who had solid GPAs and lower MCAT scores

E-mail or call Dr. Speicher's office (you'll probably talk to Terry). Just tell them that your first choice is LA, you have already been accepted and you would like to get your choices in as early as possible. I know last year the sheet just said to e-mail in your rankings anyway.

I am scheduled to interview here at AZCOM on Dec. 2nd. Is this interview date still okay in terms of the available space of the seats by far? I was able to grab this date from February online. I feel good since I wanted to interview on December instead of January or February.

Is interview format different here compared to other DO schools? What do you guys recommend how to prepare for the interview? Thanks.

I'd say Dec2 will put you in a much better position than February. Of course everyone would rather interview Sept/Oct.. but that early in Dec is good considering you probably weren't complete in July.

My interview format was three interviewers. Usually one DO, PhD and another faculty... that can change though. They had thought out questions and knew quite a bit about my application. They interviewers do not know your numbers ex GPA, MCAT.

Know the traditional why DO, why AZCOM. The occ. ethics question and health care reform. My best advice would be to think about how you can incorporate your positive attributes and experiences into most of your answers.

Good luck!
PS I stayed at the Comfort Inn for a great price and it had everything I needed. I think it was $55/night.

I'm also trying to move up to Dec from Jan interview. I'm checking the MWU website 2-4times a day but I guess I'm not checking it often enough lol

Yeah, a little bit of luck is required at this point to grab any earlier available date online. But, as time goes, more people will withdraw their interview dates, so I expect more earlier dates will be available. Keep checking the portal when you can.

application got put on hold at AZCOM... was upset about it but luckily I got into CCOM today. Yay.

Hey Everyone...just withdrew my application and interview for Jan 17th if someone wants to grab that...I know it's not a Nov interview or anything, but good nonetheless. Good luck to you all!

For those of you who have scheduled interviews, how far out are they? I have read some for February. Do any of you know the class size and how many more or less have been accepted so far? Does AZCOM accept more applicants than it has spots available?
Thanks for sharing any info you may have!

Some people have scheduled as far out as February, but spots earlier will continue to open up until...February.

Class size is 250, no clue how many people they've accepted so far this cycle, and they do end up accepting significantly more than 250 people to fill their seats.

dear anyone on AZCOM invites who is getting ready to drop their interview can you please post it here/ and or email me?

i would REALLY appeciate it...esp if its early on...Dec-Nov

I've heard numbers around class size 250... accept about 450 overall... interview around 650.. those are all approximations though.

My perception with most schools is if you get an interview you stand a pretty decent shot. The trick is getting from the 3000 applications to the 600ish interviews. Dont forget those 450 acceptances are through the entire application cycle... all the way up to the first day.

True that.

There were 1 or 2 people that didn't show up to the first day of orientation and were replaced that day. Plus one that was accepted to her first choice MD the 2nd day of orientation so she left here and they took someone else off the waitlist...

Anyone interviewing December 5th? I'll be flying from Canada and thought that it would be a good idea to organize a small meet up. Also, I'll be staying for one extra day after my interview and wanted to drive up to the canyons. Are there any good (and affordable) tour companies what offer these types of excursions? Or am I better off just renting a car and driving there myself?

Thanks!

If you don't mind me asking, do you have a plan for presenting 300 thousand dollars US up front for getting the student visa?

I had few questions I wanted to ask regarding living in Glendale.
How's the public transportation? Should I buy a bike and a car?
Do current students feel it is a safe city to live in?
Those who have spouses, any of them work? If so, how do you guys manage during clinical rotations if you have to relocate?

Thanks!

Public transportation exists but you'll definitely be needing a vehicle or a really good friend you don't mind mooching rides off of according to their schedule.

You could definitely do at lot worse as far as safety is concerned; if you want actual numbers and crimes just look up some crime stats for Glendale and other areas you've applied to.

A lot of my classmates have spouses who work, if they're not rotating in Phoenix their spouses are, for the most part, going to be quitting their jobs or transferring if possible. It's just the nature of the beast and the school definitely doesn't hide the fact that you might have to move away for rotations.

I haven't done it yet, but will be. You'll need to get a couple lines of credit from Canadian banks. From what current students have told me is so long as you communicate with the bank and show them what you need it is possible. I think it's about 350,000 now too. The money needs to be transferred to the US but it doesn't have to stay over here.. all you need is a statement saying it is here.

I have a Jan. 13 interview date, if anyone could hook me up with an earlier one I would really appreciate it. Thank you...

I have been camping out on the interview scheduling site constantly for about 2 weeks and it seems like no spots earlier than jan have opened up. Anybody actually having any luck?

Not much interviewing goes on during November and December, you might see something last minute but at this point, January is probably the earliest most people will be able to find.

can we assume that the jan interviews= waitlist fight?

I just spoke to an advisor there. Their interviews are now into February but they said not to worry. They admit people all the way through their May interviews. It may be more difficult to get in, but they still accept if wow them during the interview.

Just got my email confirmation from Terry that I will be in L.A. for rotations for 3rd year! Huge thanks to DbDan for that protip to email Dr. Speicher my rotation choice. I haven't even received my application packet yet and it's been over 2 weeks (15 days).

Anyone else get a letter in the mail saying they are on the wait-list for an interview? Is this a bad sign? 🙁

No, it's quite easy to get in with a January interview date; same can be said for February. Yes, "statistically" it's easier on you the earlier you interview, but "statistically" the school usually interviews ~600 people and accepts 2/3 of them to fill the 250 student classes.

Talked about extensively in this thread at various points in time. No it's not a death sentence, but you're on a fence post at present and you need to be proactive about your situation.

Hey guys, I was initially scheduled to interview in Feb, but I bumped it up to Jan. Few days ago, I saw Dec 2 open up and I took it. The next day, there was another Dec 2 date available.
Keep checking, it is possible people may still cancel their interviews in Dec

Hey guys,
I never actually called but i never received a message after my interview. Should I just assume i've been wait or could I easily have been rejected. Or is it too difficult to tell? And if i have been wait listed, whats the best plan for me to still try and get in. Ive already graduated last year. MCATs were 26. Im still working and thinking of trying to do more research if i dont accepted elsewhere.

Hi guys,

Does anyone know AZCOM rotation sites for 3rd/4th year whether they are AOA-program mostly, or dual-accredited programs.

Thanks

I can't tell you about all of the sites, but at my interview the faculty kept bragging about how MWU students rotate at some of the same locations as University of Arizona, Creighton, and UCLA students and tend to out perform them..... I don't know how much truth there is to this but it grabbed my interest.

Most of our rotations aren't ward-based, so neither. As for the ones that are legitimately associated with a residency program, most of them are actually ACGME I believe (if it's in Phoenix or Tucson it's most definitely ACGME, if it's in Arizona but neither of those, it's most definitely AOA, and if it's a "Children's" rotation it's definitely ACGME).

They do like to tout this a lot, maybe I can give you some definitive information in a year...I'm sure it's mostly subjective though, as I doubt AZCOM students on the whole out-perform students from UofA, Creighton, and UCLA on the whole...

Have you at least checked your portal? Either way, call and figure out your situation if you don't have the accepted student checklist on your portal. If you're WL, keep the school updated with new grades/MCAT, publications, research, exposure, LORs, etc. Being proactive is your best bet.
