AZCOM Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The only official facilities open 24/7 are the cafeteria room (no food available) and the student lounge. There used to be a small gym on campus but I think that was moved to the rec center which has hours.

During finals, the library does extend hours however.

Sadly, there aren't any ihops nearby or coffee shops that go into the night. It can be hard if you're the vampiric type but people seem to make due.

Do students typically use the gym on campus or is it more common for students to use 24 fitness/LA fitness/Golds?

It's a decent mix of the two, but I think the majority likely get their exercise off-campus one way or another.

Does anyone on here road cycle?

I used to. I ended up trashing my bike though because a drunk driver blew a light and hit it. Luckily I bailed quickly. Now, given the fact that I am going to Phoenix, I'm starting MTB.

Just wanted to let you guys know that I recently declined my offer of acceptance for AZCOM. Goodbye $1k deposit, but hopefully someone on the wait list will be hearing good news soon 🙂

As for me, I'm looking forward to moving to the Vegas area for TUNCOM this summer! 😎

and TUNCOM is about 10k cheaper, don't sweat the 1k loss.

Haven't lately, but am looking at picking it up again once we move to Glendale...

I just started myself. My road bike got trashed a couple years ago. I bailed just seconds before a drunk driver took out my bike after blowing through a light on my way to work. It was unbelievably frightening.

I road cycle...riding a Lightspeed Ghisallo...you?

I have a Pinarello FP2. I hope it can handle the heat. We should get a group ride going when we get down there. My wife rides and I have a buddy starting Dental in the fall who rides as well.

To all who are riding the waitlist like me, just spoke to admissions. Numer today is 160 on the list, and they won't pull off till end of May 🙁 Still keeping my fingers crossed though!:xf:

Yikes that's so many! 😱 And it's only going to get bigger 🙁 Good to know there's really no chance! ughhhh.

Are people that are pre interview hold getting interviews yet?

wow!!! how did it go from 109 reported earlier this week to 160!!!! but if you read azcom threads from previous years I think the number was similar, but there's another round of interviews remaining.

Just out of curiosity, whats the point of having a waitlist that big?

I'm in.

When I called admissions just before the April interviews, they told me I was 1 of 50, and the woman I spoke with was surprised that number was so low. They must be anticipating a high turn over rate if they waitlisted an additional 100 after two weeks of interviews. Alternatively, this could just standard procedure.

Welcome to purgatory. I've been here since February

It's pretty rare to see people road biking/hiking/outside anything during June-August unless you're up really early. Especially if you're not from the Southwest, you're probably just going to want to stay inside or sit at the bottom of the pool with a snorkel. You'll get used to it after a month or so though.

The rest of the year however, outdoors paradise.

Paradise. Thats why I chose this school. 😀

Well...lucky for us med students...we'll be up really early anyway 🙂

Snorkel you say? I scuba dive...anyone else? Lake diving isn't anything like the ocean but can still be way fun! Anyone else dive?

Not yet, but I consider myself adventurous 😉

I'm hoping it's standard procedure and by some miracle the waitlist is fully accepted 🙂, while I'm in Purgatory, I may as well be in Denial too 😉 haha, or at least LaLa Land

I don't know the exact numbers, but you can look at other schools and see that the waitlists are appropriately sized, especially for a class size of 250. You always see schools with like 435 accepted, and 135 class size. That means 300 people turned down seats after being accepted.

Stop counting yourselves out. Anything can happen.

Don't give up hope everyone. Things change up until July so keep up to date and call occasionally for news. As with anything, though, plan for the worst.

As promised, here is a quick album of my studio I just moved into. I took these quickly off my iPhone so if there is another angle or whatever that someone wants, let me know.

Thanks Flushot! Do all units look like this with the color carpet and wooden flooring in the kitchen and bathroom? I was surprised because the pictures displayed on the school website have a much lighter carpet and what appears to be white tile in the kitchen (and I assumed bathroom).

The newer units (any of the "luxury" units) have the flooring in the pics. The older buildings have the other stuff you've seen (though they have replaced flooring in some of the older units since I've lived on-campus and I don't know what type of flooring they've replaced it with).

Can anyone comment about building B?

I lived in B 1st year. If nothing has changed, it is the old style with white carpet and linoleum. I forgot to mention my pics are of the newer "luxury" buildings with the blue carpet and wood floor.

B is okay but the price reflects the downsides. There is no laundry in house, so you'll have to go to the laundry room outside. The kitchen area is much more cramped and is actually smaller than my studio despite being for 2 people. There was no disposal in my unit that year so I had to clean out the sink manually and there were often clogs in the sink.

There is no real deal breaker for any on campus housing but I felt like upgrading for these conveniences. I wouldn't have minded a roommate this year but my odd schedule plus no interest from others kind of shot that possibility down.

Yeah lake diving is just not the same. My wife and I are really starting to miss scuba diving after diving as often as we were over the past few years in some really exotic locales (Bali, Philippines, and Indonesia). Congrats again Cougar! Hopefully I'll be joining the ranks of accepted next year. :xf:

So people keep telling me to prepare for Arizona heat. How hot does it really get there in there summer?

It was 102 today. Your steering wheel burns your hands for the first 2 minutes of driving. During the mid of summer it will be consistently in the high 110s.

Basically...if you've ever been to hell...multiply that by about 10...and that's Arizona heat...at least its a dry heat...I think I would die if these temperatures hit in Kirksville...

The pool makes it all much better...much better

😱 That is insane. How do students handle that kind of weather. I for one can do absolutely no work in anything above 90.

Everyone must be crazy sun burned there. Do i have to take a shower in SPF 95 daily to be protected or should i simply give up.

Air-conditioning. Lots of it.

You either bathe in sunblock, get really tanned/burned (a number of people seem to opt for this route...at least until the pathology derm unit...), or remain indoors...in the air-conditioning.

Read on the Facebook group about the utility bills...people hitting $400 a month in houses....gotta love the heat, but it sure beats the cold.

Is anybody looking for a roommate? I'm trying to find someone because I didn't get in to the on-campus units. Message me if you have anything available.

I know this belongs in the reapplicants forum, but this is one of the most visited threads in DO and I need to know the answer soon:

If I graduate this Spring, can I still do retakes? Or do I have to delay graduation until I retake those classes? I'm currently on 3 waitlists with a 3.6c, something like a 3.2s, and a 30 MCAT. I'm not sure how far up on the lists I am, so things become much more complicated if I have to choose between graduating and taking my chances with the waitlists or delaying graduation and forfeiting my spot on the lists.

Edit: nevermind, I found the answer.

You can do retakes whenever you please; as far as I know, it shouldn't affect when you graduate because that's purely dependent on your undergrad institution. My suggestion would be to graduate and register for your retakes so that in a worst-case scenario, you have those in-progress (or even finished) by the time schools start receiving your app this upcoming cycle; in a best-case scenario, you get in off a wait-list (and it doesn't affect your acceptance because it's not part of your app for the current cycle unless you update the schools of your retakes and your acceptance is conditional on passing them) and can drop the classes. I'd also be weary of doing too many retakes at once...don't want to spread yourself thin.

I suppose I should read the edits...

Eh, reading the edits is overrated. Apparently doing a search is inessential for SDN. Great answer and perhaps others wondering the same will happen to read this, imho. 😎

Which units are considered the "new" ones? I'm in Building G...

The further in the alphabet, the newer the building. The three newest (and as far as I know, the only luxury buildings) are J, K, and L.
