AZCOM Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
When I was accepted I emailed Jose Ponce, who is in charge of on-campus housing, and asked him about applying for housing. He said: "Housing application for next year will be available on the first Friday of December and is first come first served basis. The sooner you apply the greater the chance to get housing. Thanks

Jose Ponce"
I have an interview in February. What happens if I get accepted, how would I go about applying for housing and all that? Wouldn't it be way too late then? Should I call the school and ask about this?

GAH! interview invite! now to choose the 12/2 date...(in 2 days!) or wait till february (the next available =(

does anybody know what their policy is for trying to reschedule if an earlier date opens up?

Hey All
Those who got interview invites for AZCOM, how long did it take after your file was complete slash anyone knows what days adcoms meet to extend invites? Thanks.

Hi. I was complete on 10/26 and just got an invite 12am on 11/30. Good luck!

Briefly, for those people who are OMS at AZCOM, what do you especially like about your school, something that other DO schools don't have? If you can share it, I would greatly appreciate them! I am interviewing this Friday and hopefully it will be a pleasant experience!

Hi,
I am hoping to live in apts within walking distance from the school (but not on campus). Anyone have any recommendations? Especially if you know of any places I should avoid. 😀 Thanks!

I was accepted the end of January when I applied and had no trouble getting on-campus housing (the month difference really doesn't make much of a difference). Certainly I didn't get my first-choice floor-plan but I was still able to get my second-choice and upgrade to my first after MS1.

San Prado and San Lagos (the two just across the street from campus) are really the only two easily walked commutes that I know of.

I interviewed the 28th, 2 days ago, and I'm super anxious to hear back. I feel like it went really well. This is my top pick besides my state school.

Good luck!! AZCOM is really good about letting you know fast, just keep checking your portal!

Interviewed today...they said the committee is next meeting on the 5th and 6th, so expect decisions around then 🙂

Does anyone know the tuition for AZCOM? I tried looking for it on their website but couldn't find it.

Three clicks starting with the link provided and you're there (or a quick search for "tuition" in the website's provided search box should turn up a relevant table as the very first result).

http://www.midwestern.edu/Prospective_Students.html

Also, assume a 5% increase in tuition for next year because, well, they always find a reason that magically raises costs 5%.

Does anyone know why the tuition here at AZCOM keeps increasing? I am just curious and this school's tuition is the only thing that I am worrying about.

It raises at every school every year, AZCOM's is just higher than most to begin with

Withdrew my spot last night. I had a wonderful experience here, and thought the campus was lovely. So for all of you hopefuls, here's another available spot. Good luck!!!

Blame federally-backed student loans providing a nearly limitless supply of self-served candy in a jar. Oh, and grass. We have acres of meticulously-manicured grass in the middle of the desert. 🙄

lol, I see...I heard you can take a loan from the government about $70k a year, right?

More than that. AZCOM's COA is higher than $70k for pretty much anybody who doesn't live with their parents (even that might be $70k+ now) and all of it can be funded via federal loans. The only things that really change with the more you borrow are the interest rates and fees because you're only allowed so much lifetime borrowing of the lower-interest, lower-fee Stafford loans (and you can only borrow so much in Staffords per year as well) and everything else is taken care of by the higher-interest, higher-fee GradPlus loans.

Hi!

Just got an interview here yesterday and I am totally bummed to see that the next interviews available are in April! If anyone has an earlier spot they are withdrawing please let me know.

Thanks!

I know the likelihood of on-campus housing apps being up by today has already been mentioned, so I wanted to lend some credence to that since contract renewals are now active for current residents (read: check the portal and get yo' shizzle filled out if it's available for new applicants and you want on-campus housing; the sooner you submit, the better).

Hey guys the housing application is up.

🙂

Yup, I didn't remember until I was driving to work.. then I sped the rest of the way and submitted it first thing when I got to my computer ^_________^

Does anyone know if the on campus housing allows pets, I would assume it probably doesn't but i cant find an answer anywhere

Sorry if this has been addressed elsewhere, but did anyone catch where the rotation site in northern California is? I thought I might have heard Modesto during the interview.

had my interview today -- No pets

(Good for me, I am not man's best friend's best friend.)

Dr. Wily where did you find the application online? you mind posting the address?

I interviewed today and admission counselor who showed the campus told us that the pet is not allowed. I am sorry if that will cause you any inconvenience.

You're not allowed any real pets. You can have fish in an aquarium <15 gallons, though.

Presently, it's Turlock and Modesto but the Modesto rotation is up in the air for some reason (which is quite odd as we're opening up an ortho residency there in the coming year I believe and are working on [I want to say] an EM residency there as well).

Go to the your home screen for the portal after you've logged in ---> Student Services tab (top of page) ---> housing application link (side menu of page)

Great, thanks! 👍 Sounds like there are only a handful of available spots, but worth trying!

Do most students opt for on-campus housing?

Do most students opt for on-campus housing?

Nope. Most DO students end up living off-campus for whatever reason (pet, physical separation of work and home, nicer amenities, cheaper, location ,etc).

HOLY CRAP! I haven't even submitted my secondary. Does that pretty much mean I am screwed?!?!?! 😱😱😱

You definitely need to get on that because you're coming in a bit late in the game at this point. You can still potentially get an earlier interview slot (they'll become available, especially with the December deadlines nearing), but you need to get your secondary turned in ASAP for that to even be a possibility.

How can you get it cheaper than ~$700 with all utilities paid except electricity?

@_@

I'm taking my beater car that probably wouldn't make it on a long road trip and my bicycle, so I opt'd for on-campus housing. Plus I hate paying for gas.

p.s. I hate that they regulate the on-campus internet.. I'm huge into torrents and not having Peer2Peer file sharing KILLS ME.

Hi everyone,

I just made the decision to withdraw my acceptance from AZCOM. I hope someone on the wait list will benefit from this and enjoy this fantastic school. Good luck to everyone entering the 2012 class!

It's really cheap compared to where I live too ^_^ I'm just trying to get the best deal and so far, I couldn't beat the on-campus housing (especially with all the stuff included).

Oh, a single person can definitely find cheaper and throw in the utilities and probably end up under what on-campus costs, they would just end up having to commute and might not be in the best neighborhood. That being said, I think most people that find it cheaper to live off-campus live with roommates, which kind of makes sense if rent and everything is being split between 2+ people.

Though, they all have better internet than what can be had on-campus. Ours is atrociously slow and IT hasn't done anything about it, in spite of assurances that they're "looking into it" all the time and frequent complaints from students since at least this spring. Lack of p2p will be the least of your worries.

Wow, I'm glad I came out of hiding to check the thread again. I'm hoping to live on campus again for 4th year so thanks for the heads up that the app is up.

I am also looking for a roommate and so this is kind of sudden. If any of you are interested in living with a 4th year who will be in and out of the apartment, sometimes even for months, please send me a PM ASAP so we can get our apps in.

Also note that Jose is pretty chill so if you do get setup with a roommate and you later find one of your own accord, he can help you out.

EDIT - I should note that they really do not regulate on campus internet through housing, at least, in a way that can bypass what I'm doing. I'm no techie or anything, but there are ways around this. Also, if you use private trackers, they usually fly under the radar, unlike those found on btjunkie.

Also, you can't officially have pets on campus, but people do tend to bring dogs here and there. I'm guessing you risk your contract by doing this, so I would just assume no. I think even San Prado/Lagos don't allow anything beyond cats and they tack on like 100 to your monthly rent for them. You may have to go further out like Riverstone.

I want to live on campus, however my interview is in Feb. Will there still be a chance to get on campus housing at around the end of Feb?

Assignments are made in March and are on a first come first serve basis. The applications just opened up yesterday, so I'm not sure how good it looks for you. However, randomusername did say that he applied pretty late and still got on-campus housing to his 2nd choice floorplan so it maybe still be possible!

Well, I applied as soon as I was accepted in late-January. I know somebody who was accepted off the WL over the summer and was still able to get on-campus housing, though.

For those who recently interviewed, check your portal! The admissions folks must have met today, happy to say I was accepted! I loved AZCOM...I think I'll be withdrawing elsewhere and placing my deposit here 🙂 Sunny Arizona is sounding pretty nice right now.

It's sunny, but it definitely hasn't been all that warm.

Congrats on the acceptance and good luck to all of you interviewing soon!

Accepted!! Interviewed 11/19
I have a tough decision between MSUCOM and AZCOM. But looks like AZCOM atm, location is too good and the people at MWU were amazing!

RUN, how do students like living at San Lagos and San Prado? Can you please give me your honest input as to housing at or close to MWU. Much appreciated.

I got accepted as well!! Crazy! I just had my interview this morning! 🙂))))))

Congrats to everyone! I was also wondering, is the off campus housing the same walking distance to class as the on campus housing? And if anyone could chime in on the pros and cons of on campus housing vs. off campus it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I think I got accepted as well. It doesn't formally say it anywhere on the portal, but an accepted student checklist is now there. But when I click on the matriculation agreement, it says your information is being processed, please check back tomorrow. So I'm assuming I am accepted.....but I guess I'll wait until tomorrow to be sure.

But if I did, super excited, loved this school!!!
