Hi
I have a question regarding BS and BA degree
Currently, I'm a Biology, BA degree.
But my friend told me that BS degree would look better or will be more helpful in the future. I'm sure it will help you since you have to take couple more science classes than BA degree. But what I want to know is if having a BA degree will decrease my chance of getting into dental school than BS students. I'm worried now. Please give me some advice.

It wouldn't matter in my opinion. Many students get into dentistry or medicine without having a science degree.

I mean its not like adcoms will look at your BA in bio and think that a BS would be far superior. Does a BS look better? Yeah I think so but its not going to keep you out of dental school, believe me. The only way I can see this ever affecting you is if its literally between you and another applicant and you are so similar that it comes down to that, but you are looking at like a one in a million shot of that actually being the scenerio. Most likely it will definitely be from something else if you didnt get in. A dental school prolly wont tell you its because you got a BA instead of a BS, unlikely!

Wouldn't a BS degree be a better choice? A BA wouldn't fill the pre-reqs, so wouldn't you have to take all the extra classes anyway before even applying?

BS and BA have almost same exact requirement. Its just that BS requires couple more classes such as Calculus 2 and research credit when BA only requires up to calculus 1 and no research credit.

Thanks for your advice. I feel little relieved now. 🙂

Thats true. Not all students are majoring in science field to get into dental school. So I guess it wouldnt matter. Thanks 🙂

I always thought BS/BA requirements were different for most universities. Where I go everyone receives a BS unless you take two years of a foreign language and then you get your BA. So if you are an Art Education major and never take your 2 years of college level foreign language then you will get your BS. Confusing!

Exactly! It IS different for each school so it really doesn't matter. When I switched to the BA I had that same worry and asked one dental school (Baylor) whether it mattered. They told me it didn't. They look at the classes you've taken, not the specific type of degree. Sometimes a BA allows you a little more flexibility in your classes and can actually be a better alternative to the BS. It really just depends on what classes you want or don't want to take.

ohh for my school both BA and BS has to take 2 years of college level foreign language. I guess it really varies by school.

I did Calc 2 because I was engineering for freshman year, but I decided to get 10 more science credits for a BS in microbiology because, honestly, I thought NOT getting a bachelors of 'science' in a science major would look ******ed.

Just my thoughts.

BUT - to the OPs question, I don't think it will make a big difference to whether or not you get accepted, plenty of other variables fall before the difference of degrees. good luck

At my school, the BA in biology is more of an education track, whereas BS is recommended for those going into professional school/research. Really though, if you fulfill all your pre-reqs, it really doesn't matter which degree you get.
