I was wondering if anyone knows of any good backup plans if you get rejected and also, if anyone knows some good one-year graduate programs for biomedical sciences/biology/etc? THANKS!

UCI has a 1 year masters in biomed engineering... The people in it applying to med schools usually get an auto invite to the interview... atleast that is what I have heard...

By backup, do you mean, something to do for a year while you apply a second time to medical school? Or are you looking for some career other than physician? 🙂

If you are rejected by MD and DO med schools, then Podiatric medicine is a good backup, as they also require the MCAT and have the same prerequisites.

I mean a backup to do for a year if you get rejected by medical schools so you can reapply the next year. THANKS!

Bartend, waitress, valet cars, any service based job that will allow you to stash a lot of cash while working on your app, retaking MCAT, and volunteering if that is something you like to do.

Let me re-iterate: Your goals should be:

1. Stash cash
2. Improve application

Do not, by any means take on any sort of debt over the next year. Unless your GPA is abysmal, you have no business in a formal post-bacc. Get a job, two if necessary.

special masters programs

Columbia has some interesting-looking 1-year master's programs but I don't know much about them.

If you're in Florida, UF also has some 1-year master's programs.

I truly truly hope it doesn't come down to this, but retake my MCAT... If it weren't for that one single test (one single section actually, VR) I would be a pretty strong applicant!

But I can't explain how much I hope I do not have to do that... If I got into an average school this year, and then I got a message from God saying that if I retake my MCAT and apply to my one top choice next year I'll get in, I wouldn't even think twice about going to the average acceptance.

If you're planning to reapply, then what you should do for the next application cycle is dependent on your individual application. If your mcat was low but your gpa was fine, then you need to retake the mcat. If your mcat was fine but your gpa was low, then you might consider an smp program. If you're lacking in clinical experience, then you need to gain some time on the wards, etc. If you have some red flags that are almost impossible to remediate (i.e. academic dishonesty, serious convictions, etc.), then you need to consider if applying to med school is really worth your time and effort.

livin' in a van down by the river

I was really only willing to go through this for one cycle. I felt like I did pretty much everything I could up until this point and there was only so much debt/time I could spend at this point in my life before I had to move on. Thankfully I was accepted. My real backup plan was to become a chef, I was planning on going to the French Culinary Institute in NYC. I would actually still love to do that in the time between now and when medical school starts, but I'm not sold on taking out another 45k in student loans, before I'm about to get into 160-300k in debt from medical school.

I am definitely retaking the MCAT, and getting a job.

I was recruited to be an Abercrombie and Fitch male model when I was applying to med school. However, I was accepted to med school so I did not pursue these modeling opportunities. If I had been rejected by the med schools to which I applied, I would have become a model, at least until the bloom of youth faded.

I guess it really depends why you got rejected this year.

If it's grades, then a SMP would probably be good.

If it's MCAT, study and retake. If it's lack of clinical exposure, then volunteer. Studying for the MCAT/volunteering would also be conducive to having a full time "real" job at the same time. I would minimize your debt and try to stash some cash if you can.

my back-up plan is just try again.
