Hi guys. I got a D in my calc II class which is the last math I have to take. There were a lot of reasons for my D, one of which was NOT lack of studying, as I put like 5 hours a night of study into the class. It was my first quarter at college, maybe that was it, or maybe it was that I just have a bad time with math. No excuses though, I definately take full responsibility for the grade. Anyhow, I do have a high B in calc I which I took at a college my senior year of high school. Anyway, the thought of retaking calc II isn't a pleasant one at all for me after all that effort to still get a poor grade on my final. So I was wondering, if everything else for me looks good (assuming it will) is that D going to keep me out of medical school? If I retake, I'm not so sure I will even get a good grade, I mean, probably better than a D, but nothing spectacular. I know it would be a really good idea to retake it, I understand that, but I just wanted to know HOW good of a idea it was and if it is absolutely necessary. I will definately retake and put forth the same amount of effort I did the first time around if I must. Thanks alot!

hmm, my first unrelated question is why you took calc II? Unless its required for your major, calc I is fine for the vast majority of med schools.

I wouldn't bother retaking. If calc isn't your thing, no sense in struggling with it anymore. Just do well for the rest of college to make up for it, and remember NON calc based physics is just fine for both the MCAT and med school pre reqs. (I'm sure that last comment will provoke some "how can you ever truly appreciate physics without calculus" comments from chemistry/physics/engineering majors out there, but whatever 😛)

People do get into med school with a C or D early on in college. Just be prepared to explain it come interview time 😉

If calc II is required for your major, you will prob. have to retake it and get a C or better. Also, my undergrad school had a freshman clemency rule that any credits retaken from your first 15 credits would be REPLACED by the higher grade. Meaning, if you retake calc II and get an A, B, or C...the D is erased forveva'.

also, i agree with DW. one D during your freshman year is not going to kill you. Esp. if you kick ass for the remaining (although long) years to come.

Sorry to hear about the grade.

Unfortunately, a lot of med schools won't accept a D in a required course, and contrary to what another poster suggested, plenty of medical schools require a full year of calculus. As painful as it may be, you may want to consider retaking it.

My advice would be to talk with your pre-med advisor. My guess is that they'll recommend that you retake the course.

Good luck,
doepug

I took Calc II because it's required for a bachelor's of science degree which I am pursuing in psychology. The D works since it's not a major requirement...I know, it's weird..but a D is all you need. Thanks for all the replies! I did take Calc I though which is what most med schools require, IF they require Calc at all right? And I got a B. So I don't need to worry about that, right?

Oh yeah, and I could do that "freshman forgiveness" rule with it, but the D would still show up on my transcript so although Ohio State, my school, wouldn't calculate it into my GPA, AMCAS would, right?

Sorry if this is off the subject, but I just had to bring it to your attention, crystal18mc, you are one fine dime ma. If that is you in that picture, all I have to say is 😱 .

Oh by the way sorry about your D. Just keep working hard... wit cha fine self.

Thanks for making me smile on a bad day!! Much appreciated! 🙂

To echo the others. . . I don't think that it will matter, if everything else is OK. Just keep a solid GPA going in your other courses. My understanding is that med schools are willing to forgive the freshman year, if subsequent ones are good. This is especially true if it is just one course.

I was in a similiar boat as you. I didn't understand a damn thing in Calc II. But then my professor got fired, and he gave everyone an A. It was the only grade that I did not deserve.

Ha, That is probably the best possible thing i have ever heard of happening. God i remember sometimes a prof would give a good curve, or a prof would miss a class, but a guy not only getting the boot but you guys getting all As in a tough ass class hahahaha that is awsome
