Baylor CM 2008 Applicants Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks for the update on class size. I also should mention that after my initial post I checked the Admissions site and found that last years class size was 172

So I'm guessing an increase of 4 every year for 5 years will put them at 200 by 2013.

Baylor has traditionally accepted ~300 students to fill the 168 spots in the class. However, that was in 2005 when I was accepted, since then they have gone up a few spots in the rankings and are now a "top ten" school, so they made not need to accept as many students to fill the available spots. "Supply and demand" like phenomenon. With that being said, they are increasing the class size, so they may still be offering acceptances to ~300 students to fill the 175 or so spots. Hope this helps and eases some anxiety.

I opened a fortune cookie the other day and it told me to expect good news soon.

Too bad i dont believe in that bs....

I wish I had gotten that fortune cookie! I just like to go to Tea House in Houston and rub the Budda's belly...I'm def hoping thats good luck. Well that and holy candles.😀

Ha! I hung out outside that teahouse until 3am the day of my interview. Advice: do NOT drink multiple bubble teas and then hang out in that shopping center past 11. There are no available bathrooms within a 1 mile locus.

can anyone tell me what the order of the status page is? right now, my "application is complete, and will be going to committee to review in the near future." Is there anything on there beyond an "application reviewed" phase? For whatever reason, no matter how long I stare at the screen, nothing changes...

My favorite tea is Taro(sp?). If your ever in NYC you should either go to St. Alps tea house which is in Manhattan or you should go to Sago which is in Flushing, Queens. Both are REALLY good!😛

It sounds like Baylor is supposed to let in a few each week. Has anyone heard of any acceptances this week? Maybe tomorrow will be the day?!?

I just got a freakin call from a number that said UNKNOWN while we were out at dinner.

When I picked it up, no body answered me and it eventually hung up! They still haven't tried again!

I am freaking out man :scared::scared::scared::scared::scared:

...it was probably a wrong number, but it's too much of a coincidence that it said "unknown"...thats what they do right?

Usually when med schools call, they don't just hang up on you. Unless the dean is a 'breather'.

haha, jk. Do you think tomorrow will be the day?

I think it stops after the review is complete and then you just wait around to hear about an interview. my application went straight to committee after being complete so i never had a near future message. perhaps that's because mine went straight to the trash. but who knows.

The "future" message only sticks around for a day or so before it changes to something else.

mines had the "near future" thing all week...i really shouldve decided to apply earlier

Hey! I'm new to the tread and to SDN. I've been reading this thread for a while so I decided I should finally post. I interviewed at Baylor on 10/19. so are we eligible to get in today technically? when do you think they will call? ahhh i really want to go to baylor! 🙂

Has no one heard from baylor since that initial round? I thought they did them like once a week, but I guess not.

Maybe the adcom met today and will call on Monday? Hopefully?

A friend of mine got the call Friday last week.

A friend of mine got the call Friday last week.

There was no interview last friday. When I interviewed there they said that the adcoms met at five on interview day to discuss and assess the interviewees from that day. I imagine calls will go out monday and potentially include people who interviewed today.

Thats my guess and I am sticking to it until some one has a better idea.

ok so how impressed was I today during my interview? wow!! baylor is awesome.

i'm crossing my fingers that i will hear something monday. both of my interviews went really well and I got positive feedback from my interviewers.

Good luck to everyone else waiting to hear!!:luck:

I totally feel the same way Jolie! I wasn't so sure about Baylor at first but after interviewing...WOW.

Good luck to everyone waiting to hear back from Baylor too 😀

I'm interviewing there on Nov. 19th. If they only send out about 300 acceptances (to fill a class of ~175), and I'm on the seventh interview date, and they interview 60 people per date, I'm in the top 420. I don't think the interview would be enough to bump me up to the top 300. I have a 33 MCAT and 3.87 GPA, with extensive research experience. Do you know of anyone with similar stats who was not a URM who got accepted even with a late interview date (as late as November)? Is there any hope for me or is all hope lost because I am so late? (I'm late not because I submitted my application late but because of my stats.)

(I'm late not because I submitted my application late but because of my stats.)

Just curious... so they rank applicants when giving out interviews? Btw, if you read last year's acceptance thread, I think you'll see at least one person with similar stats who interviewed later and got accepted in Mar.

You are ranked and then given an interview if you are among the next 60 or so people and then ranked again after the interview.

They don't give out most acceptances until all interviews are done.

If they gave you an interview, they're interested in having you attend their institution. You just have to convince them through your interview.

Good luck!

^Thanks for the optimistic reply.

I'm just worried that it doesn't matter whether or not I interview now. Since they work on a score-based system, I may already be very behind due to the fact that my initial score (based on my stats and EC's) was low to begin with. They don't tell you how much the interview counts for, and I'm guessing it doesn't count for a huge amount. So, my final score is already going to be hindered and probably already pretty much determined. Even if not all spots are filled now, it hardly seems to matter-- only the top scores get selected, and if my score is already low and the interivew counts for little, my score will not be able to get an acceptance. I'm guessing the majority of acceptances comes from the initial interview dates, and the only reason anyone might get an acceptance from the November or onwards pile is because they just applied late.

Let me illustrate my understanding of the system. I don't know how it works exactly but I think I remember this formula from somewhere:

GPA*10+MCAT; That means for me: 38.7+33= 71.7; Let's say the interview counts for two points and I get all two points. So say the interviews up until now have only been given to people with greater than 74 scores. So, even if I were to end up with a score of 73.7, what if all the people who have interviewed so far have had 74's? That's 420 people above me on the list with greater than 74's. My mobility on the list is limited by the maximum 2 points given for interviews. So, I'm pretty much screwed before even interviewing, and interviewing can't even make up the difference for my low stats, and the only reason I'm being interviewed is so they can stick to the official story that they don't fill up all their spots until the end of interviewing season or so if by chance all 420 people reject their spots, they will still have students like me who want to go there.

I'm hoping it's not this way, and I really don't believe that it is. Otherwise, wouldn't they choose the people that look best on paper and accept them without ever meeting them?

I think that there are important things that they need to learn about you at the interview. I looked at the eval sheet and there were several criteria that can't really be judged from just your app (i.e. your understanding of healthcare, ability to communicate well, commitment to service). IMO, you can write all the bs you want in your app, but when you interview it's obvious whether what you've written is true.

I think that you get rescored completely after the interview, but I could be wrong. If it's obvious you are intelligent, I think that they might overlook a slightly lower (but by no means low) GPA. I also tend to believe and have heard from lot of schools that there is a GPA/MCAT threshhold above which they know that you can do well at their school and that the rest is the intangibles.

I have a 3.62/34, and I'm hoping that if they wouldn't accept me with those numbers that they wouldn't have interviewed me at all.

I know of a girl last year who got into Baylor with a 31 or 32 MCAT, and a guy who got rejected with a 35. It is not purely a numbers game. I have very similar stats to yours, and interviewed 9/21. I think Baylor and most schools try and look at your whole application, and take the interview very seriously.

She wasn't a URM, was she? I don't have spectacular EC's (mostly research, one publication as an author though not primary authory in a major journal, some volunteering, shadowing, and some leadership positions). I mean I haven't liked saved someone from drowning or anything. (I'm also Indian-- there are ten billion trillion gazillion Indians in medicine.)

Bowtie-- what are your stats if you don't mind me asking?

I wouldn't focus on the URM thing. If they invited you, they like you for some reason.

As LizzyM said on another post, if you have a stellar interview, that can really make your app and get you an acceptance.

Also, remember that we can only speculate. The adcom is a black box, so to speak, and the more we try to figure it out, the more frustrated we get. But, I personally don't think that they're looking for cookie cutter numbers machines. If they were, I wouldn't have been invited to interview.

Thanks, Jolie South.

As you can tell, I am very worried!

Don't worry TheSky. Before you were worrying about an interview invite.. and you got one. Before you know it you'll interview and get accepted 😛
I'm still waiting (at this point probably in vain?) for my interview invite 🙁

Quantifying your app in this way is a nice way to spread FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt). Just note that during the discussion of the applicants, your score will change up or down. Asking how much is really impossible as only the dean of admissions knows that.

You'll get an interview invitation in the next batch, I can bet you anything. I have determined this in a reasonable, scientific way, so you can expect an interview invitation soon. See, on 10/19 I know someone who interviewed with a 35. On 11/2 we known Jolie South (I hope I got this right, sorry if I didn't) who interviewed with a 34. On 11/16 I'm interviewing with a 33. They probably have a lot of 33's, so they probably have to spread them out over a few batches of interview invitations. So, they're probably still sending out invitations to us 33'ers. I wish the best of luck to us 33'ers!

Tell me about it! It's a great way to spread FUD!

Sorry to throw a monkey in your wrench but utindian got an interview with a 29.

Yeah but this isn't a 100% foolproof theory. It works maybe 75% of the time.

Also, factors such as absolutely, amazingly spectacular EC's or the fact that you are an URM don't fall under my theory. This factor doesn't fall under my theory either: if your application was submitted and complete like on the first day that it could be turned in, and thus you were possibly the only person on their list so they had to give you an interview spot. For these factors, you need a new theory.

She wasn't a URM, was she?

Bowtie-- what are your stats if you don't mind me asking?

She was Asian.

I would prefer not to fully disclose my stats, but I will say that I think I got an early interview for the following reasons:
- I am a non-traditional student (25) with a non-traditonal major (Fine Arts & Humanities)
- I went to a small liberal Arts college, and have very good letters of recommendation.
- I had good essays

None of these reasons are quantitative, and I could be completely wrong about them as well. Try not to lose sleep about it. When I interviewed at Baylor one of my tour guides mentioned that 95% of people who interview with them get into medical school. So congratulations on getting into med school.

Now turn off the computer and run from SDN as fast as you can.

No, that's not how it works. There have been several people I know personally (with 33s) that interviewed in late sept with me. It's really more than just numbers.

Just to support the others who commented on mcat score and interviews, I got a 33 and interviewed on 9/21. Which I believe was the second interview day.

I met with an adcom from another Texas school this spring before I applied to get some perspective on how I should shape my application. Through our discussion the topic of MCAT scores came up. The adcom stated, "Testing only predicts testing." Meaning that the only reliable corollary to your MCAT score is how likely you are to do well on the USMLE boards. The MCAT predicts NOTHING else. So if you scored in the top 10-15th persentile on the MCAT you are more likely to score in the same range on the USMLE exams, But if you had to retake the MCAT a couple of times to break the 30 point barrier you may be more likely to have to retake the Step 1.

The Board exams are VERY important, but says very little about the quality of doctor you will become. This is why your essays and especially your interviews are so important, because they show your commitment to medicine and our capacity to care for others.

When you go to the status page, what does it say for those of you who have already interviewed?

mine says "your file has already been screened and is being processed."

mine said that yesterday and then today it changed.

Let us know if you get a call today. Though I don't think a correlation between the status page updates and acceptances has been established. Maybe those who have already gotten in could shed some light on this.

I interviewed in September and had my transcripts in before Oct. 15th and still have the "We have received transcripts from the following school(s)" page.😕
