Baylor CM 2008 Applicants Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i'm planning on flying from dallas to houston and back on the same day -- anyone have any tips/suggestions in general (which shuttle/cab service is cheapest? which airport in houston is closer?)

I did exactly what you are planing on. Only I flew from SA to Houston for my baylor interview, and then flew from Houston to dallas for my UTSW interview the next day.

Just grab the card of any cab or shuttle service you get from Hobby and call them to pick you up when you are ready to go. I just grabbed a cab and spent about $20 each way. The realMD's suggestions are also very good as well. It makes for a long day but is very do-able.

Hey guys so when you mail them a picture of yourself, are you supposed to include full name and AMCAS pin on the back or what? Sorry for the dumb question :|

It's a lot easier to give it to them during the interview day so it doesn't get lost.

in case anyone makes the same mistake and forgets to bring the photos, there is also a CVS or Walgreens two blocks away where they take passport photos and can print them immediately. I think its on greenbriar (man my houston geography is lame considering i lived there for 18years). I definitely walked there before the interview day started.

I was so nervous interview day that i forgot to give them my picture :scared:. Thankfully that didn't stop them from accepting me. If you hand it in interview day be sure to do it first thing when your dropping your stuff off at the admissions office so you don't forget.😀

For those that don't know, the picture is used to associate a face with the applicant on paper since only two people in the admissions committee will actually ever meet you. Try to look your best!

bump...

btw, does Baylor call every Thursday?

I mailed mine in with name and AMCAS pin written on the back.

Thanks for the advice guys! So for those of us interviewing late, if we are accepted, will we probably know by March? I ask because I really want to start looking for a place to live wherever I end up ASAP...

Minimum wait time is 2 weeks. As far as being accepted, you never really know. I found out Christmas Eve of all days.

That's an awesome day to find out!

Yeah, apparently there were 2 "Unknown" phone calls that I didn't see because I had a final I was taking. Only found out about those a month later. 😛

i graduated in may of 07 and haven't had any coursework since. for the amcas my transcripts were sent but does baylor require another set of transcripts to be sent to them directly?

Only after being accepted.

No interview invite here. Well, I guess my dream of Baylor is over.🙁

I think I'm going to cry too, but not out of joy--I keep hearing about all these acceptances to BCM but I haven't gotten in yet. I wonder if I messed up in my interview??? Did any of you have really bad interviews but still get in to BCM? How much does the interview count for? Is BCM more numbers-based or more interview/extracurriculars-based?

I had the most awkward interview of my life at baylor and I still got in. The girl interviewing me wouldn't talk, and there were maintinence men in the room the whole time (making things even more awkward....if it were possible) trying to fix the door. After that interview I didn't think I had a chance at baylor, but i got in somehow!

On the other hand-my best interviews by far were both at southwestern-and I didn't get in there. bastards. I had already decided on baylor though =)

Same here, I had absolutely spectacular interviews at southwestern and got no love from them. My Baylor interviews were a bit mixed, but I still got in. I think your chances are more directly related to when you interviewed rather than how well YOU think they went.

Also given the size of our facebook group (44 members) I would estimate that the class is at worst half-full.

waiting is no fun, but your time will come soon enough

Baylor, where are you? It seems like no one's posted here about getting a call for the past couple of weeks.

No interview invite here. Well, I guess my dream of Baylor is over.🙁

I just called and asked, and the last invites are going out next week. No one will be rejected however, until probably the end of February, just in case some people decline/cancel and they need to extend a few more invites. I'm certainly not holding out much hope, but it'll be nice to feel some closure after next week. Good luck guys! :luck:

Today I received a call for a Baylor interview on 2/8. I was wondering what you guys thought regarding what kind of chance I have at getting in with such a late interview. Is it true that only about 1/2 the class is filled and the rest will be filled in March? I feel like I should take this opportunity to interview there since Baylor is a great school. My only issue is that I'm currently not in Texas, and plane tickets are looking to be around $500 or more. Also, I already have an acceptance to UTMB. I'm not sure if it'll be worth it to buy a ticket for that much if my chances of a Baylor acceptance are already slim. Any thoughts?

Invites as in interview invites or acceptances? Thanks!

Go to the interview. Congrats on the UTMB acceptance, but if you think you might regret not interviewing with Baylor, then just go. rolling admissions will continue into march so you still have plenty of opportunities to get in.

Especially if you've never seen the TMC before, I'd definitely go interview. It's an amazing place. Before I was wondering what was so great about Baylor bot the interview definitely changed my mind.

So I will look over the interview feedback for Baylor but anyone want to share tips/questions they got they wish they were prepared for at Baylor on their interview day? Thanks in advance guys!

It's worth going because it is always helpful to have that peace of mind that comes from making a decision based on the best available information. Choosing a medical school is like entering into a kind of 4 year relationship or "contract". You want to make sure you picked the most compatible school because you will get to enjoy it or fight it for 4 years, most likely.

My Interviewer found out that I work as a wedding photographer and asked, what was the worst wedding I ever shot was like 🙄. I also got the usual policy/hypothetical situation question. "would operate on a patient with a minor hernia which does require surgery if the patient really wants the procedure done?"

Other than that its like any other school. It's always a bit of a crapshoot as far as how well you are going to mesh with your interviewers. Prepare for it like you did any of your other interviews.

I was interviewed by a shrink at BCM. I think it's safe to say my chances of getting in are shot 😉

Hahahaha. I'm sure you'll be fine.

I had an interview with a shrink at BU. The whole time I kept thinking, "Wait, if I say X what is her interpretation going to be? Is she psychoanalyzing me right now?"

Has Baylor called anyone this week? There seems to be no news on any acceptance thread regarding Baylor. Ugg...this wait is killing me. :scared:

Maybe they will start extending a lot of acceptances beginning March. How much of the class do you guys think Baylor has filled by now?

Maybe 60%? I know that around 50% we're given out by the end of last year. We've got 44 people on Facebook alone + 2 others who aren't.

That's kind of encouraging! I am so paranoid though... keep thinking are they going to use the late interviews for waitlist spots and accept people from earlier interview dates??.... please love me Baylor 😛

I had heard that they make a lot of offers in feb/march....and I just called them and found out that they have made offers for 80% of the class and will finish interviewing by end of February.....i don't know what the chances are now, especially since I interviewed really early and haven't heard anything....

80%??? i'm guessing thats 80% of the total acceptances given out, and not 80% of the final class size?

Wow, 80%? That makes me sad.

I'm guessing 80% of the class is full, though one has to remember there's a 2 week delay in the committee making a decision and you actually finding out about it. With only one more interview date left, things should be picking up soon.

wait, so you think its 80% of the ~175 spots, and not 80% of the ~270 acceptances? sorry im being neurotic, but god i hope thats true, haha

The 80% number makes little sense unless you have a number in your head of how many acceptances they will give out all together (and they give us that info as well). And I highly doubt many people have given up a Baylor acceptance at this point in the game (financial aid isn't even out yet!) I'd wager that it's 80% of 175 spots since they definitely haven't given out enough acceptances to fill a class. So that means they've given out 140 out of 270 probable acceptances, or about 50%.

For those who forgot what they said during their interview day, they won't fill their class (or attempt to fill it) until interviews are done. Rest easy, there is still plenty of time left.

I certainly hope you're right. I hope my trip out to Baylor this Friday won't be in vain.

Also, any tips or pointers about Baylor? Is there anywhere I can find info about my interviewer? All I've been able to find is the date, time, and location of the interview.

They purposely don't fill the class so you do have a REAL shot (and I'm not talking waitlist stuff here).

Interviewers are luck of the draw.

yeah, i agree with you, since she said that about 80% of the seats....but I do know that a lot of people hear back in feb/march....and there are some people who are still considering other top schools and may still just be holding on to BCM, so I still have hopes....

I know several people who interviewed at the end in prior years and got in. It's not really that unusual.

Ah, no, you're not going to be able to find out who is interviewing you. Expect a physician, faculty member, or even a 4th year student.

Good luck!
