I'd love to hear some opinions on this. I liked Baylor and Wash U a lot. I think I would be happy at both. I was accepted to Baylor, and am wondering whether I even need to wait around on the waitlist for Wash U. I'm just wondering if anyone has a take on what the reputation of Baylor when it comes to getting into residencies. I don't care about the overall US News rankings, but I was a little concerned that the ranking of baylor by residency directors was quite a bit lower than the ranking for Wash U (and actually lower than the rankings for schools lower on the overall rank list). I hate to sound like I'm obsessed with numbers, because, really, I'm just concerned that the rankings are reflecting that it may not be as much of a help to come from Baylor when applying to residencies (and I'm sure I'll need all the help I can get!).

Well, the response rate is lower - my theory is that a lot of directors aren't thinking when they're filling out those surveys and assuming BCM is affiliated with the lower-reputation of Baylor University in Waco or the Baylor Medical Center in Dallas (and is probably the reason Pres. Traber is trying to rebrand the school as BCM instead of Baylor).

Baylor students don't seem to have any trouble matching to high powered residencies at great medical centers - I don't remember which page it is on, but somewhere on the BCM Class of 2009 thread is the match list this year... check it out.

Come on, residency directors know exactly what Baylor (medical school) is and are not going to confuse it with anything else. Thinking otherwise is idiotic. Its a nationally recognized top end medical school. You will match very well out of it. Whether Wash U would present an advantage over Baylor is difficult to say, but it would probably be minimal is existant. You are still you wherever you go.

thanks, i appreciate both of your takes on this 😳

i think the real reason the reputation score isn't a 4 is because most baylorites CHOOSE to remain in texas,

when i looked at baylor's matchlist it seemed like the far majority of students got into their top residency spots

for example: 28 or so baylor students decided to do pedaitrics and also decided to do it at baylor (a top 5 program in pediatircs), that will cause many residency directors in pediatrics to not be able to evaluate baylor students and write down high scores on the sheet

however as a student at baylor with average scores i assure you that you won't be at any disadvantage when compared to an equivalent student at WashU.,

also you have to realize that baylor would cost approximately 25K less per year due to the very low instate tuition (which you can get after a year if your out of state)

finally, it is my personal opinion that baylor's students are some of the coolest kids i've ever met 🙂

good luck on your choice,

I talked to a lot of doctors about Baylor and they all said that it is an amazing place and that I'll get world class training. I recommend you do the same. Once you speak to people that actually know, it will ease your mind. In fact, I just released an acceptance at another school and when I told them I was going to Baylor they started to gush about what a wonderful school it is and how lucky I was to get accepted. Baylor is awesome!

as a person who is dropping an acceptance at Wash U and going to Baylor, I've thought about the relative strengths of each school. from what i've gathered, Wash U may be a bigger brand name in terms of academia and research, but Baylor offers strong clinical training and possibly a greater focus on clinical teaching. So it all depends on what you're interested in. Also, from looking at the Baylor match lists and talking to current students, Baylor definitely prepares you enough to be competitive for great residencies across the country. Good luck with your decision!
