Being in debt vs. going through military?

Don't be a wimp. Join the military to serve your country and if you want to be a doc, you won't be a little pansy worried about going into combat. As a doctor you will most likely deploy to a CASH and stay there. You won't be out on patrols or at a FOB. You will be trained to defend yourself. But if you're scared about getting deployed more than a 10 minute drive away from mommy, don't bother. We don't want you.

Oh, the bravery!

I know nothing of the subject personally but as an “anecdotal” (in a secondary sort of fashion) piece I’ll say most of my med school pals that have explored the military option decided not to do it for whatever the reason.

Got a little bad news for you, my friend.

In the event you end up as a GMO (still very likely amongst the Navy/AF students), and you do anything on the ground, you will almost certainly end up in a FOB, as well as on the log trains to and from. Remember the Beiruit bombing? Both their docs were killed. Of the four dead docs in the current conflict, one was not a GMO, but in fact a surgical subspecialist.

Yeah, it's not super dangerous, but it's not a sure thing you're coming home either.

Not a sure thing you're coming home either? What exactly are your military credentials?

I'm sure they've done a lot of exploring. Probably watched Stop-Loss or Home of the Brave and decided it wasn't for them. 50 Cent and Ryan Phillipe definitely give an accurate rendition of military life.

I am currently a Medical Officer for a Marine Battalion, set to deploy to the middle east in March.

Alright. I thought I'd ask as there are many who would love to comment on the current administration or military as if they knew what they were talking about. Thanks for taking care of my fellow leathernecks.
