Just i want to share my emotion...and wish to all my colleges in the same way good luck...
I have one advise for all who still in the nightmare...Keep practice no matter if the next bench is in manikin or in the monster with two heads, the true is the hands have to be in good shape and performance...just be ready for your time!

hi all,
finally after 2 1/2 year of waiting i got a chance to take bench and it was bad. its soo depressing, becoz,so much money and effort goes into it and so many years and then on that day it goes bad..
but for the others who are waiting, and want to know what's going on.. here is some info. firstly dr duggan's is out with the new bench format classes, and the new format i think evryone know's. no lab work is all i know.. but u can email dr duggan's or call his institute for a brochure.
on sat 12 nov they gave 19 3/4, 9 pfm,and 3/14 mo not sure .
on sun they gave 30 3/4, 11 pfm and 13 mo.
and this time they called people who gave their part 2 in march 2003- may 2003. so my guess is that for the coming exam, they will call people who gave part 2 from june 2003 onwards.. so please start preparing.. we need a lot of time. i got to know just a month before .. and its not enough... so good luck to all of u...

Hi,
I took my part 2 board on march 31, april 1 2003 , but I was never scheduled to take the bench!!! 😱
Now I am worried !

[hi dont worry, they pick numbers randomly, ur name will surely come in the next one.. so just be prepared.. dont worry.. good luck!!

Hi,

I am back from giving the bench exam BUT very unsure of my performance!!
It did not go as good as I thought it would .I was confident of my class 2 preps but on that day it took me a lot of time to complete the class 2 (#3 MO)which was unsatisfactory!!.As a result, I was under pressure for the rest of the exam as i was running behind schedule and could not give enough time to evaluate all my work. It is a very helpless feeling that I get that inspite of putting in so much effort things go differently on the day of the exam.
Anyways, hoping for a favorable result for all of us.

hi guys
dbc is going to arrange a meeting at san diego ca on 17 of nov ie tomarrow if someone who lives nearby can manage to attend the meeting then atleast we can get the important first hand infrmation.they r going to discuss the possible exam dates for the year 2006 and they may discuss about the changes in the examination pattern.i think it is always worth to attend the meeting of dbc b/c in the public session you can present your views about the topic of discussion.like last time when we went they discussed about conducting two extra exam next year ie overall 4 exams. and they were saying that most of the time no body who are in the favour of this bench exam show up in the meeting.last time we were 9 peoplewho were there in the meeting and we presented our views.
here is the link for the location and different agendas for the meeting

well i just wanted to know if anyone is aware of the bench course which one of the doctor has started in fremont
the website is www.studydent.com
does anyone has the idea of the course he is offering 🙄

hi all!

i have some doubts regarding the changes made if anyone can inform me please, the amend section 1041 division 10 title 16 of the california code is on the dental Board website, as pasted parts in this forum, but i have read the bill chaptered in 2004 SB 1865 that states : SEC. 3. Section 1631 of the Business and Professions Code is
amended to read:
1631. The subjects in which the applicant shall be examined shall
be those subjects as the board may from time to time prescribe.
However, the subjects of examination shall be selected in accordance
with the trend of dental education in California as that trend is
determined, from time to time by the curricula of the dental colleges
in California approved by the Dental Board of California, and no
examination shall be given on any subject which is not then, at the
time of the determination, being currently taught in those approved
dental colleges. In the event of any changes in the list of
examination subjects, all approved dental schools in the United
States shall be notified, by the executive officer of the board, at
least two years in advance of the effective date of any change or
changes in subjects. Each applicant, at the time of filing an
application to take any examination hereunder, shall be given a list
of the subjects of the examination for which he or she is making
application."

the bill AB 1467 also chaptered and approved the same year has the same guidelines, not including this paragaraph previously posted, both bills Ab 1467 and SB 1865 were approved and signed by the governor.the bill SB1865 was approved later in september 21 2004.
By the statement 1631 i conclude that it has to be 2 years in advance to notice this change............what do you think?
how can changes be made not taking in consideration of this section made a LAW?

thanks for any info 🙂))

hi Ani,
I live in SFV too. Have u considered taking the course at UCLA or do u want to take it in Duggan in particular?
Good Luck!

hi guys
check this link
http://www.dbc.ca.gov/pdf/wreb_exam_update.pdf
In the 7th question
Q As a foriegn trained graduate, may i establish eligibilityfor the california examination after i take the wreb and then rely on wreb results in my application for licensure?
A YES a foriegn trained graduate can take the wreb and then complete the necessary steps to establish eligibility for california examination. For example ,a foriegn trained graduate can take the wreb and subsequently take and pass the california restorative examination and then make application for licensure. It should be noted, however, that in general clinical examination results are only valid for five years.

does it mean that we can take the wreb first and when we get the chance for bench exam we can take it after wreb

in the next questin they have mentioned it very clearly that california board will send a original letter to wreb stating that u meet the requirements and are elligible to take the wreb dental exam.

I dont know if iam interpreting it aorrect or not.
please check this page and post ur views about it.

thanks

Hi Sumitysharma!

Good post!
wonderful news for us ...foreing training dentist ....in the waiting time to take Bench we can apply for WREB and if we will aprobe then you can take the bench when they schedule and have the CA licence ...
That's good!!!!

Just we need to have a letter from the CDB to send directly to WREB to confirm we are in the process and complete the requirement to be licence in California... that means we are in the list of reference numbers waiting to be schedule for take the bench and the Clinical...

Remember ...since January first 2005 the CDB accept WREB like valid exam to be licence...

Check't out the web site:

do pu think WERB is easier than california licensure exam?

Regarding taking WERB exam as a foreign graduate dentist,
Although the update on California Dental Board seems very interesting and specially they say YOU CAN TAKE THE WERB EXAM AS A FOREIGN TRAINED DENTIST,.... I was like oh my god I can take Wreb exam and get licensed in member states such as Arizona or Washington.... until this morning when I called California and Arizona Dental Board,.... nothing has been changed for us. don't be fooled like me. Still the only way to be eligible for this exam is passing at least 88 units of postgraduate dental courses in a accredited dental school, so... . God bless all of us.

Hi,
Yes I took the UCLA Bench course in February. It was the first time I take the bench course . I haven't taken the bench exam before . But there were people taking the course with me who told me that they took the course elsewere before and didn't pass the exam. And they said that the UCLA course was better.
As for my experience , i think that the UCLA course was really good but it was too compressed (at least for me).
Maybe after u take the course we can at least encourage each other to practice. The mere thinking about the bench course makes me want to change career!! 😕

anyone here passed the bench that was in november ,, sorry for all who failed , but every one i know failed !!!

I did not make it through the Nov 12 , '05 exam either!!! 😡 🙁
It has still not registered to me 😕
My friends also did not clear!
If they grade us in this manner, I have no confidence that the 2nd attempt (for which again I have to wait for who knows how long) would be favorable!!! So much of hard work and money spent all gone to waste. Do we really deserve this????? I don't know what to think.
Though what I have observed (may not be so) is that saturday exam people faced it really hard. Those who appeared on Sunday, seem to have scored better .I have heard of 2 people who just managed to pass the Sunday exam, but all this is of no consequence!!!! 🙁

Anyone , please guide me as to any other options we have besides schooling.

sorry for all hose who failed, i know its so hard, but for me THE LORD helped me and thats the only way i wud have passed with a score of 76, praise JESUS.

For those of you who sat for the November exam and received a failing score, please send me an e-mail. I am trying to organize a formal protest of the grading standards of the exam. I attended a Dental Board Meeting at UCSF on December 5 and complained about the test results. I want to follow up my complaints in writing and the more candidates that write to the Board the better. I believe that the grading of the November exam that was conducted at USC, was neither "calibrated" nor "validated". Those are the words that the Dental Board uses to describe their process to ensure that the grading of exams is fair and consistent.

I know that it has been a long time since I posted anything here and I apologize for that. I am still hopeful that the Dental Board will allow all of the candidates who deserve licensure in California to actually get a fair chance to earn their licenses.

You can email me at [email protected]. Thanks

did you know about the decision of board about the exams in 2006?
format change or the times of the exam?
thank you again,
:luck: with our process

I was informed by the members of the Board that there will be 4 examinations in 2006. The really bad news is that Dr. Soohoo, a member of the Board, was successful in getting a format change to the exam. All future exams will be conducted on a mannequin and a composite preparation will be added to the list of required procedures. I could not get them to explain the details of the changes to the format of the exam. Dr. Soohoo seems to think that these changes are better for candidates since the laboratory section of the exam is being deleted. However, I think that the changes will put all candidates at a severe disadvantage. I think that it is totally unfair to make changes to the exam format and the changes will make it all that much harder to pass and also force candidates to spend large sums of money for new training and practice. I want to seek the support of all candidates to repeal the changes to the exam format.

Thanks

hi,
how can all candidates support for not to change the exam pattern?
If somebody has any clue we can work on that.
Thankx

Here is a letter that I wrote today and e-mailed to some of the candidates that I met at USC. You can copy and paste it onto a word document and send it along. The more people that fight this battle, the more likely we all are to have our voices heard:

Robert Hedrick, Executive Director Dec. 9, 2005
Dental Board of California
1428 Howe Ave., Suite 85
Sacramento, CA 95825

Subject: Restorative Technique Examination

Dear Mr. Hedrick,

I am writing this letter to protest the proposed changes to the Restorative Technique Examination. I just learned from another RT Examination candidate that the Dental Board of California has already made changes to the format of the Restorative Technique Examination. Any changes to the RT Examination would place all future examinees at a severe and unfair disadvantage to those who have already passed the RT Examination in its current format. There was never an adequate public notice or period of public comment from RT Exam candidates for the proposed changes. There is no compelling public interest served by the proposed changes to the RT Exam, other than placing another hurdle in front of those sincere candidates who have hoped and relied upon a fair and unbiased chance to obtain their dental license in California through the Restorative Technique Examination.

I also write this letter to ask that you provide the statistics for the rate of pass/fail for each of the last six (6) Restorative Technique Examinations. I would like to know the pass rate for candidates who were taking the examination for the first time and for those candidates who were taking a repeat examination. I would like to know the pass rate for each of those two groups for each of the last six (6) examinations on an exam-by-exam basis starting with the most recent examination, which was just administered at USC on November 12th and 13th. I was a candidate at the USC exam site and I received a failing score. I want to know what methods were used to calibrate and validate the examiners at the USC exam and most importantly, I want to know if the pass/fail rate at the USC exam was a statistical anomaly when compared to other recent examinations. If the pass/fail rate was outside the statistical variation that a reasonable disinterested person would expect, then the logical conclusion must be that the problem was not with the skill level of the examinees, but rather the problem must have been with the grading of the exam. Further, if it is determined that a statistical anomaly occurred, I request that for the sake of fairness and equity, the Dental Board void all failing scores for the USC exam and conduct an immediate reexamination of those candidates who did not receive a passing score.

Sincerely,

Candidates name

If you have any comments or suggestions about the wording above, feel free to post it here or write to me directly at [email protected].

Scott

Dentisthusband, thanks for taking up the initiative to protest against the results. I will be sending an email as well as fax the board with the points you have mentioned above. We need as much support as possible ,so I hope all of us who did not clear this exam, send this letter!!! Maybe the dbc will hear us if there are more voices of protest.

I passed bench too, but I am already into the school.

I heard that candidates who passed bench exam can take WREB and practice in CA only.
Also that Werb is not as hard as CA licensing board.is that true?

So I can leave school and take CA or WREB exam? but then what if I want to practice in any other state? Would they require DDS from school?

Also I heard that dentists through bench exam get less pay, more work and less respect, any idea?
Please throw some light on this!
TIA

It looks like this was a difficult bench exam as I have yet to read about people passing. Anybody else out there? 😕

Dear Scott and All:

Maybe the new format for the next exams won't be a bad idea, IF...the board will still allow examinees to prepare teeth under direct vision, without having to mount the typodonts. Every clincian would say that preparing and restoring a class III composite is a lot easier than preparing and doing lab work for a cast metal restoration. This way the odds are passing will be to the candidate's favor.

It would be totally unfair if the examinees prepare teeth on a mounted typodont and the examiners check them unmounted, under direct vision, which I know for sure, is what the Board wants to do.

Finally, I am not sure if the new format is based on current teaching trends in California dental schools. Maybe those in the IDP or SDNers from local dental dental schools can verify if they are required to mount typodonts in their pre-clinical labs. After all, the bench exam is the "pre clinical exam".

Ivorinedust
"Apolonia, relieve my toothache!"

hi
i also have the same thinking that most of the people whom i know they scored least in the cast prep with lab work and some of them failed b/c of lab work only.
ivorinedust
i think they r going to evaluate the preparations on the manikin itself not by holding the typhodont in the hand as they have clearly mentioned that u have to bring a self addressed envelope in which they will be sending our typhodonts back after evaluating not like the usual trend where they evaluate and return our typhodont on the same day.

yes i aam also planning to take the wreb , let me know if u know any one who has passed the wreb already.from what heard the wrebb is a lot easier than the cal boards..what do u think?

even i think this time the no. of passing candidates is really very less.it is arround 12 or maximum 20 out of 220 and the evaluators might have been really cranky and this way i think dbc is just doing the formality of conducting the exam

I agree. It's not like the April exam where I've been hearing a lot of people passing. This time around, passing is harder. By the way Sumitysharma, did you take the bench yet?

I just recently took the Bench Test and made a lot of new friends. We promised to contact each other once the result is out and none of us passed the exam and all of us have the same failing grade. It seems that we have been graded and categorically marked as failed even before we took the exam. Imagine one universal grade!!!!!!!!!

Could that universal grade be a 74? Few of my friends who took it and failed scored a heartbreaking 74. And almost all failed on the 100% prep with a 65% grade. 🙁
