After long waiting bench extension has been approved
just want to know how many of you took or will take any course praparaton and if yes which course ucla duggan...
or just practicing yourself
any recommendation....????

how r u guys prepping 3/4 crns on uppers?,,God its tough

That's not as bad as upper molar MOD's.😡 Have you tried cutting that dang offset in a straight line? Figured out a way of holding the hatchet so you can work the boxes and flares?

I can imagine hearing a lot of sobs in the exam if this were assigned.😱

Anyway, I talked to someone "in the know", and he told me that the guy who use to give weird assignments in the past exams (#3/14 and 19/30 DO amalagam, anyone?) is no longer connected with the exam unit. So that would afford us a little sigh of relief. Not to say that you should not practice upper molar MODs and Class II DO on molars--at least twice.

i failed april exam. don't know why? its not a joke..but ireally wonder ,who knows what exactly to prep. and what to do? i took the course with Dr Orest at Duggan ..and he was confused too, at that time. i used to pass the mock boards. but still failed the exam ..my score was 74 ...ffffffff man it sucks..the exact average was 74,3 ....ffffff.
anyways i wish to share the measurements we had at Duggan with anybody had took the UOP course. please just be honest ..its not fair to hide what you know.
any questions let me know ..am more than happy to ansewer ..
one more thing ..if you take the exam at USC ..please be aware that you can pull the Manekin out..towards you from under the table..i was stupid ..or blind and kept it far ..that was really challenging.. then after the exam i knew that i could pull it ..
Good Luck All

Hi All,
I just had a question regarding onlays. Are you guys preparing 3 walls or 5 walls on each proximal side? What I mean is just the axial wall and the flares directly or an additional wall between the axial wall and the flare. It is much easier with 3 walls as Dr. Stevenson teaches in his course, in comparison to Dr. Duggan who teaches 5 walls.
Thanks in advance. Opinions will be appreciated.

I would prep the 5 walls as taught by Duggan. I feel if you start flaring out from the beginning, u have no control over the angle or I should say over-flaring? I might be wrong, just my opinion.
I know this is a stupid q, but do we bevel the occluso-buccal surface on a GC? Thanks.

Hey,
I know how it feels. I was in the same boat few yrs back. Well, they flunked me bcoz of insufficient axial reducn on pfm (74) I prepped 1.1mm on the facial as taught by Dr. Duggan. Now, I probably will prep 1.2 or 1.3 not more than that. I also heard that the previous examiners at USC are sacked and examiners from north cal, probably UOP, will be called in. I donno how far this is true but hoping this is true. Good luck!!

well both 5 and 3 walled mod's are right...stick to what you are comforatble with,i asked dr duggan the ques before my last exam, and he said bth are correct,so do what u what... most of people i know do 5 walled for molar and 3 for prem,dr duggan also said that if u do a 5 walle prep and sometimes you loose one of the corners, then don't bother extending furthur, let that side have just the flare..i personally prefer 3 walled easier for me..

I'd put the examiner where the manikin is. And do an overprepared PFM on all his teeth while in an extreme Trendelenberg position!!!:meanie:

I thought it was six walls: buccal and lingual proximal, buccal and lingual flares, axial wall and gingival wall.

Anyway...I find it safer to make the isthmus AFTER occlusal reduction. That way I can make the pulpal floor really shallow, even less than .5mm. This affords me to make a tall axial wall without going beyond the gingival line, specially on #19. Then I adjust the floor if I need to.

Or maybe I'd try Stevenson's suggestion of trimming the gingiva before the exam. Haven't done that, don't know if it's tricky. I might mess it up.

<cut>... also, does anybody know the model of the handpiece requiered to use at UOP and who sells it?

thank you very much.: )))

If you would like to use their fiberoptic set-up, then get a Star 430swl. You won't need the swivel attachment as they already that installed in every module. Not a bad idea to bring one, anyway. Otherwise you can use any four hole handpiece as they are two more hoses that would accept it.

By insufficient axial reduction you mean the shoulder right?...... but i have heard that if it is less than 1mm it is very risky..... 1.1mm -1.2 is just fine..... ... also how do you measure the incisal reduction of 1.5- 1.7 mm ........ do you close the jaws and then try to measure it with 1.5mm ball burnisher bet upper mesial and distal side of canine and lower opposing teeth at the incisal edge ......or we check it after we do the lingual reduction............ if i don't do the lingual reduction more than 1.3 -1.4 i don't get 1.5-1.7mm incisal reduction.... i don't know what am i doing wrong.........I failed in nov .. because of pfm over reduction ...... which i thought was 1.7mm ... so i am really scared ..... how to measure the reduction......?

please let me know...
Thanks

#10-restauration: Small lesion
Location on contact
Contact not broken at incisal
Contact minimun at 1mm broken at gingival

#8 preparesion: preparecion for composite ,aproch on lingual
Don't broke contact

Good Day All
i have memory loss when it comes to the bench test ..but as i remeber it was as follows:
class III composite filling
class III prep
don't remeber the teeth i think the prep was on # 8 and the filling was on 10
FMC (FGC) on # 19
MO prep on # 3
and the most important PFM on # 6 ...be carefull with # 6 ..if you don't get clearance of 0.5 mm bettween 6 and 7 you are in a big trouble ..
anyways, when i got the clearance i already was subgingivally ...i pushed the gingiva away 100 times ..and then i look, it comes back ..rediculous typodont ..if he was a patient i would use Electrosurge  for fun ..
the other thing train yourself to hold the cheek when you prep # 19 ..do not tear the cheek or scratch them ..and if your manikin has HIV put double gloves...ehhehe thats a joke ..but you have to wear gloves at the exam anyways ...
please share your experience..specially from UOP ..please guys ..let us know how it looks like there ..i never been there ...
Good Luck All
hi! what were the preps alloted in usc last april?

Hi,

drrttrdh, can you please explain what you mean by "if you don't get clearance of 0.5 mm bettween 6 and 7 you are in a big trouble ".

Thanks

Hi I was able to talk with the exam unit too.she was very nice and helpfull,What I undrstood that they are still procesing the applications.,and probably they will be done by friday,so as you mentioned cross fingers, and good luck to all of us.
What is the extension for the exam unit?

Good Day All
Inorder for the lab to saw the die (model) they need 0.5mm clearance bettween the teeth ..if you don't get it ..its a major error.. when you get your brand new typodont (equilabrated from Duggan. chech bettween 6 & 7 ..you could tell if you can get the clearance without going subgingivally ...i never had this problem till i got to the exam on april ..it was frustrating ..hope this is clear enough ...
Good Luck All

I use a headband lamp that is much better than the standard LED light. I use a 3 watt Luxeon LED headlight. It runs on 3 AAA batteries enclosed in case which rests on your occiput. It's also great to use when you ride your bicycle at night🙂

If you need a headlight, see to it that it has a Luxeon LED Bulb. It is the second generation LED and is really worth the money. These bulbs have a burn time of 10,000 hours and run for about 8 hours continuous on regular AAA batteries. They also don't get hot.

FYI, late model composite curing lights use Luxeon bulbs, so it makes sense to turn your headlight off if you are packing composite, although I really doubt if it will cause immediate polymerization from a distance.

While at Wal-Mart, you might want to check out the lighted mouth mirror at the dental care aisle. It is made by GUM and comes with a "scaler" and "explorer" tip--well at least there is a resemblance. It'll cost you $4.50 or so.
The light is regular LED and batteries are disc-type, like those for hearing aids. That makes the mouth mirror light (in weight, pun not intended). Be sure to peel off the protective film covering the mirror or you'd think something is wrong with your loupes.

Hope that helps.

When you call the board, this is waht usually works for me: call and press 9 for dial by name directory. There dail for Dawn Dill's name That is Dill. The call is transferred to someone else not Dawn at the Exam Unit

Hope that helps

Hi,

Hi,

Anyone selling the composite curing light, please let me know asap.

Hi,
I bought a brand new curing light at ebay for about $110 earlier this year .it's a pen type light. I'm not sure it's still being sold on ebay or not ,but it's worth a try at this price.

Hi avi7:

I don't see why you can't use direct vision if that would make things easier for you. But sometimes, you just can't do that and it will be easier to use a mouth mirror. Try cutting a lingual chamfer on #8 or 9 with direct vision and you'd see what I'm talking about. When I did that, it took a couple of days to loosen my stiffened neck!!!

Try REI sports. I got mine from mail order, can't remember the store-- for about $40. Find a higher wattage headlamp. Like 3w luxeon. 1w is almost useless because your unit light plus the ambient light would be brighter than the headlamp. Then again, if it is bright enough, why use a dang headlamp?😕 It's better to use a lighted mouth mirror.

I am also taking a 20w clip-on spot light I got from Home Depot for $10. Just in case. It's got something similar to a refrigirator light bulb. It should clip on to the boom of the dental light in the exam site, so I could direct it wherever the dental light goes for more illumination. Find that in the home lighting aisle.

I have question?
I got confirmation for 10th &12th.I dont want to give exam .What will happen if i dont give exam now. Will they give me chance next timeor i wont be able to get chane. please help

I think board have already cleared that if we don't want to take the exam that will be onsidered one attempt. My friend also doesn't want to take exam but this is what board told her.http://img.studentdoctor.net/images/editor/color.gif
http://img.studentdoctor.net/images/editor/color.gif
Just wanted to let you know .hope this will help

I think it says on the board's letter that if u fail to cancel or pay for the exam by the given date, then it would be considered an attempt.
They can't possibly think that we would ALL be ready to take the exam when we applied a few years back (without even knowing what year we would be examined) and we are notified about the exam only 4 weeks earlier!!

Thing is my husband is having a cataract surgery so i cannt leave him .right now we r in michigan. Is there any chance that i can talk to them and they cann't count my attempt.i dont want to loose my chance. What extension # should i call.any suggestions

hi ivorinedust,
i am asking u this ques coz i know u mentioned it before, the distal's of 3&30 and 14&19 are never in contact and already some clearance exists,so when we do the occlusal reduction, then in those area's should we reduce less,so that, when we measure the func cusps show 1.3 reduc and non func cusps show 1mm reduction? coz if there is already clearance and we still reduce 1.3 then the examiner may think that we overeduced, since he/she doesn't know that we already had clearance...so what are we to do?thanks in advance..
