Hi,

I will be starting NYCPM starting this jan. The school told me that they offer a dual degree program DPM/MPH in which students will complete their MPH in Mount Sinai. I am all for more/better education, and I do understand MDs recent trend in acquiring MPH or MBA degrees, but I do not know how MPH can benefit a podiatrist in his/her practice.

thanks

My opinion is that it really won't help you in your private practice at all.

I agree with Kidsfeet. It won't help you at all in your private practice, but in other areas of your career/life it definitely can. If public health is an area that you are concerned about/interested in, then get the degree for sure. Your private practice will not really dabble in public health all that much, but if you're interested in research and educating the public, an MPH makes all the difference.

An MPH dipoma helps a ton for podiatrists who are in the clinical faculty as Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor in a podiatry school and want to move up the Administrative ranks of the school. A faculty podiatrist at one of the podiatry schools said an MPH with the DPM benefits those who want to move up the ranks (i.e. Board of Directors/Dean position/high administrative level) as a clinical faculty member (i.e. Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor) of a podiatry school. Without the MPH, it takes longer and/or it's more difficult for a podiatrist faculty member to move up the ranks, to that of Dean let's say, in a podiatry school. This will be the new trend now and in the future in all podiatry schools in their high-ranking Administrative Departments. Interesting to hear this.
