Hello,

I am a college freshman at Michigan State University with one semester under my belt. The summer after high school graduation, I felt extremely anxious about college. A friend of mine suggested that I read these two books to maybe help with my anxiety: "How to Win at College" (provided 75 do's and don'ts of college) and "How to be a Straight A Student" (explained how to time manage, study smart and not hard, and write essays). The books truly helped me with my first semester and get a better picture of college. However, I'm having trouble finding GOOD books about how to get into med school. Hopefully I can find one that will provide me with tips on how to be a standout applicant or maybe a step by step process on what to do and how to do it. It has to be a book that doesnt state the obvious like "be yourself" or "do well in your classes."

Thank you so much for your reply,

the best book you will find is this entire forum- the bad thing about it though is that much like a dictionary you have to sort through it to find what you want

While not a "How to Get Into Med School" book per-say, the Medical School Admissions Requirements guide from the AAMC is a invaluable tool in figuring out which med schools you should apply to. It has brief descriptions for each school as well as key stats in regards to accepted applicants so you can have a better idea of where you have the best chances of applying.

Just wondering, has anyone read or used the Student Doctor Network book? I saw it at Borders once and it took me by surprise since I didn't know SDN published a book.

Would it be worth getting or would you pretty much know everything in it if you frequent these forums?

Agree with others above. SDN (search function) plus MSAR and you're golden.

Definitely the sdn forums. It really taught me everything I need to know. Other than that, I used a Kaplan book entitled "getting into medical school" or something like that and it was very decent also. It did have some items such as statistics etc which are not easily found on these forums. I'm sure you could find that book on eBay etc.

Good luck!!

If you are willing to give up the best years of your life to reach this goal, then read SDN. I am sure some books would lead you in the same direction.

If you want to genuinely enjoy your college years, take the "Cookie Cutter" path which a competent premed advisor can explain to you.

I was a sucker and read about 3 of these books awhile back, and in retrospect I found them to be a waste of money since they cover the same cookie cutter topics that SDN discusses ad nauseum. Just take the pre-reqs and make a unique path to medical school.
