What are the best fellowship programs for someone interested in a career in pulmonary hypertension?

I’ll chime in since no one has taken a stab at this yet.

In general, PH is housed in big academic institutions. Many of these programs have separate, in house PH subfellowships (not acgme accredited). This can be a double edged sword. Much like programs that have IP fellowships, some of the procedures (RHCs) will be routed towards the pulmonary hypertension fellow. Nevertheless, these institutions should have enough volume so that this shouldn’t affect you too much.

The other thing you need to look at is whether PH is run by cardiology or pulmonary and what the interaction is between these two divisions. If pulmonary doctos can’t touch PH patients (no pulmonologists with their own PH clinic), its very likely you will not get much exposure to PH during your fellowship unless you can work with the cardiologists. Of course, this doesn’t mean you can’t go to these fellowship programs if your end goal is to do PH since there are PH subfellowships and many of these programs can open doors to this just with their prestige and mentors.

Outside of T10 institutions, UCSD is a standout. They have a huge PTE program and many clinical trials for PH.

Good luck in the match ! (If you’re applying this cycle)
