At am at the point where I am ready to shadow a D.O. The only problem is, I am not sure what is the best way to go about doing so. I have gone to the American Osetopathis Association website and have found many DO in my asrea. Can someone please let me know what would be the best way to contact and ask a DO to shadow them. Thanks

You could try calling the offices and asking to speak to the office manager. If they say no, then call back in a few days and ask to speak to the doc's nurse. They may be more receptive to bringing your request to the doctor.

I sent out letters. Lots of letters. It has worked everytime.

yeah, telephone or letters. email if you have it. usually works. smoke signals, sign language, telepathy aren't quite as effective. oh and stalking is also bad. though someone i shadowed kept introducing me as "this is my stalker for the day"

You can contact a local DO school if there is one in your area..and ask them for a list of docs who are amenable to shadowing...

Where are you looking to shadow? Maybe someone here can lead you in a good direction....

I have set other SDN students up with shadow contacts...

If you see a DO on here, contact them. I'd be more than happy to have a pre-med shadow me. I'm up at Tampa General Hospital.

Q, DO

This is what I did. I called to see if they needed any volunteers and she asked the physician. They got back to me pretty quickily (free labor...haha). When you volunteer that make sure when you talk to the physician and show your interest. Worked out great for me (lots of info. and interesting shadowing experiences from the doctor). Anyways, just trying to help.

Everyone thanks for your responses. Yosh, I am not in a city or state where there are DO schools. I am looking to shadow preferrably where I live in Birmingham, Alabama.

Amy B: I noticed in one of the threads you posted that there was extensive discussion of "HIPAA". Could you (or anybody else who knows) tell me what this is, and why it has made shadowing more difficult?

Thanks.

I was told by many an office staff and office managers that due to HIPAA, they couldn't let me shadow as a pre-med because that would violate the privacy of the patient's who hadn't signed an agreement to have me be in the room with the doctor and they could get in trouble with the federal government.
