Hey I could probably search and find this answer in another thread but im too lazy...

What are some better EC other than hospital volunteering and shadowing that I could to fast without taking that much of a committment...

Clinical would be prefferred but no church/food shelter stuff since I honestly won't enjoy that...

Also, I'm already a part of a club that interests me but it has nothing to do with medicine/helping out the community..

thanks guys

What is your goal? Exposure to medicine? showing your commitment to serving the community? Both? At least one of the two? How many months/years do you have before you submit your application?

Ok I fully acknowledge I have a ****ty sGPA...I still think OPs post comes off like he/she does not care about volunteering/ECs beyond wanting to check off a box on their application. I think that attitude is horrible for a future physician. Whatever happened to doing something because it interested you or you genuinely cared about it?

ETA: OP my original post was unnecessarily snappy. Do something you like, not just because you want to get another EC, would be my advice.

Lol, these people will still make it into medical school. What can you do about it?

You're right. There is nothing I can do about it. That is all part of it. I should have just walked away from this thread without posting anything.

I know what your saying Ginger, but try to be nicer about it. DO forums are much friendlier, I learned that REAL fast haha

More commitment to serving the community but both if possible...I already have had quality exposure to medicine during the past several years but nothing "special". Even though this probably doesn't sound like the best way to put it, but what EC would increase my admission chance that is somewhat enjoyable? I'm honestly not going to do something i don't like, but i truly do want to do something. Unlike most applicants, im not going to volunteer at a homeless shelter and then say i enjoy helping the homeless or something along those lines. However, I do enjoy helping others, but I'm not going to portray myself falsely as some saint...

I'm applying this cycle (finished junior year a month ago) but i feel as if i might need to apply next cycle as well since Im only looking at certain schools. So roughly ~8-10 months to do this EC. Suggestions would be nice..
Thanks

I don't know you or what you would find unenjoyable although from your few posts I get the impression that you don't like dealing with the homeless, the hungry, or poor. So, your best bet might be to volunteer with people who are more like yourself than different. One option that is not too common is volunteering to organize blood drives on your campus and in other venues in your general area. Contact Red Cross or any other blood service in your area and see if they can use your help. Similarly, there are groups recruiting people for bone marrow registries. Another option would be getting involved in an adult literacy program or free tutoring for kids in poverty. Adult literacy for immigrants can be interesting and give you some insights into another culture. Another option is Special Olympics or adaptive sports programs for the disabled. That gives you some opportunity to get to know people with disabilities outside of a clinic setting.

Hi there
I myself am having trouble with volunteer work. I use to crochet hats, scarves and socks for cancer patients and homeless shelters. My advisor said it didn't count as volunteer work because I wasn't directly interacting with people but I'm sure he is mistaken. Can you crochet or knit? If so you should look into it. Its not much of a commitment. Hope I'm not giving bad advice.

Yes, doing something in service to the poor even if you can't see them can be volunteer service just like sorting through donations and refilling the shelves in a food pantry, but not sticking around to distribute the food, could be considered volunteer service.

However, many people value face-to-face service as being "better" than doing something by yourself like crocheting or stocking shelves. You learn more about other people and put a face on what is otherwise an abstract idea. Last week, together with another a volunteer I visited a woman in her home. She was a former crack user and an ex-convict. I know more about her and how she lives after visiting her home than I would know if I had stayed home and knit her a hat, not that there is anything "wrong" with knitting or crocheting for the needy.

Thanks for the input! I agree that meeting people face to face and getting to know them is more insightful. My crocheting is more of a hobby. I like to do it. I like to try out new designs and have people model them for me. I'm left with lots and lots of socks and hats and other things I don't need when I'm done so I donate them. I started getting requests after a while.

If you are lucky enough to have an institution that does radiation experiments in their entomology department you can volunteer after hours and possibly get bitten by a radioactive spider, thereby gaining the proportionate strength and agility of a spider, but in a human sized body. If you are adept at crochet-ing hats, scarves and socks for cancer patients and homeless shelters, and can acquire red and blue thread, you can knit yourself a spider-man-esque costume and can commit to fighting crime 12-15 hours per week. It may even become a "most meaningful experience". But remember, as uncle Ben always says, "With great power, comes great responsibility."

The problem with this activity is that you cant really talk about it in your application without braking the superheros' code (much more serious violation than HIPPA).

While this is true, the OP clearly values getting into a medical school over working with the unwashed masses, even as a super hero. We premeds all agree that:
Medical School acceptance > Justice League induction, so super hero code violoation is a necessary evil, this is the pre-allo forum right?
