Biden Out of Race

The problem with this DOGE nonsense is this bizarre Elon Musk worship that has evolved over the past 5-10 years. Much of the value of his companies and his wealth is inflated due to the “meme stock” identity of his companies. Sure, Tesla and SpaceX have had success, but they’ve been able print money because of Elon’s online persona and his ability to generate investment. His companies have had successes, but have had pretty spectacular failures as well. These failures would have been the ruin of other companies, but because Elon knew how to generate investment and excitement, he could keep things going. There is some merit to that. However, I don’t think his companies are the model of efficiency that he presents them as. His companies are inefficient and probably overvalued.

Elon’s real value has been his showmanship and his ability to create a loyal and rabid following…not unlike his current boss(?). When the zeitgeist of American culture trended toward liberal, Elon presented himself has the forward thinking progressive concerned about humanity and saving the planet one Tesla at a time. Now that the cultural pendulum has swung the other way, so too has Elon. It’ll be interesting to see what happens to Elon’s companies as the public at large sours on him and he is only left with his legions of loyal followers. Will that be enough to sustain investment into his companies?

This will be widespread.
Friend at upper-Midwest Academic shop got a email today saying staff & faculty hiring freeze is in effect. Feel bad for them because their department is pretty short staffed.

Same with the huge public university in our communities. The universities that have historically been most successful in securing competitive government grants are now the most vulnerable. It’s no longer considered bragging rights.

Lol oh how the turntables have turned

The hits just keep coming. I guess it makes sense. Tariffs generate a lot of income so why wouldn’t Canada abuse tariffs all along?

I know this is a stupid little thing, but I can’t believe that the President of the United States can’t bother to proofread (or have someone proofread) his statements at least once before sending to check for misspellings, missing words or grammatical mistakes.

Jesus ****ing Christ conservatives, I’m not asking you to go “woke” or some bull****, but wake the **** up already. America does not need this crap on a daily basis. Lol

Starting to turn the "51st state" request into a demand? I thought it was a joke before, and maybe it still is, but now he's saying do it and we can stop the trade war. Seems like an escalation of rhetoric to me.

You know it’s desperation when POTUS has to do an infomercial for the CEO of a private company who also happens to work for his govt. Surely MAGA wouldn’t mind if Biden pulled a similar stunt.

As an aside, TSLA definitely headed for 100.

When does the board of Tesla say “enough is enough” and act like they have a responsibility to their shareholders? I wonder if anyone out there could be jockying for a takeover?

It is unprecedented. Trump has broken all the norms in politics.

TSLA was always a bad company. It’s the ultimate meme stock. TSLA’s rise directly correlates to covid and people sitting at home bored with too much money from PPP checks. It’s pretty much an NFT. Every Tesla car I sat in felt like it had quality control issues. Elon Musk, like Trump, figured out how to use Twitter as a bully pulpit while committing fraud and pumping his companies WSB-style. There’s a lot of similarities between Trump and Musk…they are both successful grifters and conmen.

Both are petty as well. Musk has an ax to grind with Wikipedia because, get this, they don’t list him as a “founder” of Tesla which is accurate because he didn’t found the company. He also apparently didn’t like that they have him as a transfer student to UPenn, which is also accurate. Talk about small peckered little man.

"The European Union on Wednesday announced retaliatory trade action with new duties on U.S. industrial and farm products, responding within hours to the Trump administration’s increase in tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports to 25%.

The world’s biggest trading bloc was expecting the U.S. tariffs and prepared in advance, but the measures still place great strain on already tense transatlantic relations. Only last month, Washington warned Europe that it would have to take care of its own security in the future...

The EU duties aim for pressure points in the U.S. while minimizing additional damage to Europe. The tariffs — taxes on imports — primarily target Republican-held states, hitting soybeans in House speaker Mike Johnson’s Louisiana, but also beef and poultry in Kansas and Nebraska. Produce in Alabama, Georgia and Virginia is also on the list.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement that the bloc “will always remain open to negotiation.”

“As the U.S. are applying tariffs worth 28 billion dollars, we are responding with countermeasures worth 26 billion euros,” she said. The commission manages trade and commercial conflicts on behalf of the 27 member EU countries."

The people who endorse these policies should feel the costs associated with them. Sucks that a lot of collateral damage may occur.

Why wood a very stable genius who passed a MMSE with flying colours need some1 to proofreed his statements?

LOL

I refer you a couple pages back to proud owners earnestly explaining how Tesla is really some kind of not-car company but future tech / AI / juggernaut that was worth its pre-crash valuation.

It's really amazing to see a CEO work so hard to alienate the people who buy his product just to pander to people who'd never buy his product. (Chaos-loving cybertruck buyers being the exception, I guess.) And then throwing up a totally-not-Nazi-salute just to see how much he could hurt their overseas sales? It's incredible to watch it unfold.

Tesla was already in trouble, with a stagnant product line (except for the sometimes-rolling dumpster fire that is the cybertruck) and credible competition, but this ... just wow.

Handing your POTUS sidekick a scripted sales pitch to turn out the MAGA crowd to buy Teslas is an interesting strategy. But hey, we're talking about people who wore diapers in public to support their cult leader, so maybe it'll work.

He’s going for quantity, not quality.

All fair but doesn’t mean the stock won’t go to the moon.

I wonder if the play for Tesla now is to become a MAGA darling, make pick ups??

More likely would be a hostile takeover or the board firing Musk.

Man you guys have lost it. Really, its going to be a long 4 years for you. This echo chamber self massaging is epic. Carry on.

The poster in question only cares about DEI and immigration.
Oh I'm well aware of what he is and the values he claims to have.

Was just idly curious if his guy has crossed any lines yet, or if it's all still cool in the name of "policy" ...

Can’t defend the clusterfuk you voted for so mock people for discussing it?

There is some back and forth here. The only reason it’s somewhat of an echo chamber is because most Trump supporters can’t make a reasonable argument for starting nonsensical trade wars, freeing violent felons who assaulted cops, dumping water in California, putting an anti vax nut job in charge of HHS….

It’s a total $hit show, but the one thing we can do to stay sane is to talk about it and look forward to 2028.
