Hey did anybody else find Bio I a lot harder than expected? Any study methods / tips for doing well?

I always heard Orgo would be the hardest pre-med class, and everybody I talked to who had taken Bio said it was super easy. I'm in both now and I can't really judge based on how everybody else is doing... We've got let's say about 125 students in each class, and the class averages were in the 60s, D range, on the first tests in each class.

To my suprise, I got the high score in the class though on the first Orgo test, a 102, and yet a damn 62 on the first Bio test... I thought things were supposed to be the other way around! lol

success in these classes are sometimes contingent on individual learning style. for me, it's easy to recognize and develop patterns in biology/biochemistry so that when i have mastered the basics of presented topics i can often times use similar reasoning regardless of the hypotheticals thrown at me. i can do well on these types of exams with minimal studying.

physics is incompatible with my brain; although, i didn't find the series to be particularly difficult, it was a challenge for me to adapt to the thinking style physics poses. i had to put much more time into physics, which isn't to say it is easier or harder than biology.

It is also very school dependent. For instance, in my school, Bio is definitely the weed out class. It is curved to a B/B-, but with a class of around 400 individuals, this means that a lot of people will receive C/C- or have to repeat the class. Compared to our orgo class, which has about 40-45% of the students receiving an A and the rest receiving relatively close grades. For the most part, orgo is definitely the harder course in most schools but it just depends on which schools.

👍 opposite at my school

I hated the first semester of Bio because it was really early in the morning and attendance was required. The material was really dry and it was hard to conceptually connect it to real life. The second semester was much better because we dealt with organs (which is much easier to understand IMO). I actually enjoyed Organic because it made me work my butt off. It just depends on the school and on your level of motivation.

a lot of SDZners say that BIo is so easy and that Orgo is so difficult. i think its the other way around. I enjoy Orgo, whereas Bio2 for me is extremely trying. dont get me wrong, im getting As in both classes, but studying for bio 2 is a chore.

Bio in general is better for me. However the 2nd general bio was painfully boring, which made it more dificult...( i don't give a **** about snails or plants..) but anything human bio is right up my alley. Just had my first orgo test..I understood everything for the most part, but I messed up on the R/S things and may have done poorly :/ so I hate most things chemistry, but atleast organic is more fun that general inorganic chem. none of it is as cool as physiology though :d

Bio had longer writeups but they were way easier.

hmm yeah I guess it does depend a lot on the particular student, what comes easier to you, and also the teacher
