Hey everyone. I'm getting nervous about my Boston Univ. interview this Friday, mainly because I absolutely LOVE this school. There are so many great things about it and I think I'll be absolutely heart-broken if I don't get in or if my interview doesn't go well. I haven't been nearly this excited about any other school I've applied/interviewed with. Just wanted to see if there was anyone out there who felt the same about BU or anyone with advice so I can nail this interview. I'm reading everything I can about the school on their website and the interview feedback site here on SDN. THANKS!!!

Also, I've heard about a LETTER OF INTENT to let a school know it's your #1 choice. How does that work? I want to just go into the interview and hand them my letter of intent so I can tell them right there how much I love their school, but I don't want to sound like I'm getting on my knees.

Thanks again!

Hye dude,
Chill out, the interview at BU is a breeze, or at least mine was. They will sit you in a room when you get there and give you a shpeal that should fill u in on most of the info. Then you sit down with other students and meet some faculty while you wait to be interviewed. I would recommend taking some good notes bc their will probably be a lot of interesting things and u do not want to forget the important things you liekd so you can put them in your letter.

The dean of admission spoke to us after our interviews and did not seem too trhilled at the idea of getting a LOI instantly following your interview. In fact it seemed like the last thing he wanted to see was a letter on his desk the very next day. His advice, and mine too is to wait a few weeks after u interview and make sure it is the place for u. When you do write your letter make sure u use specifics about the school, I have a feeling that just saying the innovative curriulum and dedication to students is not going to be enough to sing their votes, especially when they have so many apps to go through.

Just remember, the interview isnt so bad and u will be fine.

Thanks CRAZYTERP, that's great advice. By the way, nice game at the Peach Bowl - that was a blowout!

does anyone have any updates about when the first round of acceptance for BU is going out? i know they said to expect the first round perhaps prior to christmas, but that didn't happen and now i'm wondering when they will send them out.

with fingers crossed!!!

thanks goredsox, I appreciate it, however, life would be much easier if the giants had won last night. I hate Terrell Owens, he is satan!

BTW if you have any other questions feel free to pm me, BU is my top choice as well and I have a lot of good things to say about it.

Hey, I am also very Interested in going to BU! My application was completed at the end of November (because of August MCAT) and I was wondering, for the people who did get interviews, how was your MCAT and GPA? I got a 30 and have a 3.71 GPA. Also, when did you complete you application and when did you hear about the interview?

thank you!

I liked it when I was there too, but the sky-high tuition costs and standard of living scared me out of my wits!!! 😱

Hey tgifbos ...
I'm an August MCATer also. My AMCAS application was complete (except for MCAT grades) at the end of July. My GPA is 3.6 with a 30 MCAT. I also graduated with highest honors in biology and had lots of ECs with several leadership positions, study abroad and research experience. I am interviewing at BU in a couple of weeks. I was notified of the interview early in December.

prolley the main reason their tuition is so stinkin high is cause their pres makes the most money out of all university presidents in the country...something like 700,000 😱 😱 If anyone has any questions about living in boston let me know... i also worked at BUSM so i do have some limited knowledge if people have specific questions.

good luck guys

Thanks Schnoodle for the Info! I was wondering if you also applied to Tufts and Harvard and if you have heard anything from them? I would love to be in Boston next year!

I applied to Tufts, but I've heard nothing from them. I did not apply to Harvard. BU will be my 5th interview. I have been waitlisted at GW, but have not heard anything from the others where I've already interviewed.

I interviewed at BUSM for an early decision program and was accepted. I had two 1 hour interviews, one with a physician who does not teach and the other with a physician who I think is in charge of the MD/PhD program. I was asked several questions concerning HMOs and the state of healthcare in the city where I attend school compared to Boston. The first interview was seemingly casual because my interviewer talked a lot. We talked about a lot of things that had nothing to do with medical school. Although I became frustrated when he continued to talk without asking me any questions, every now and then I threw in miscellanous information about myself. Make sure you get to the interview location early, I got lost in the hospital on the way to my second interview and was almost late. Another student from my college interviewed also, but hers did not go so well. They asked her a question and she didn't know the answer, so she hesitated and said she didnt know. Just try to think on your toes. Also, one interviewer read a line from my personal statement and asked me to comment on it. Just dont be nervous (yeah right). Wish you the best.

Hey tgifbos, I pmed you.

Go red sox!

speaking of tufts, does anyone know whwn they atop interviewing or giving out invites?

Hey everyone. I now have an interest in this thread because I just received an interview invite from BU today. My date hasn't been confirmed yet but they gave a choice of eight possible dates up until the first week of february.

I did my MPH at BU so I have familiarity with BUMC and the facilities. I can't wait to interview for the med school.

Also I have lived in boston for the better part of 12 years so if you have any questions about the area I can help.

conure,

Can you describe BU med? I've heard that if you get an interview, you have a great chance of getting in, is that true?
What do you think of the location? How about the student atmosphere? These things really matter to me.

What is BU really proud of in its medical school?

thanx

blackbird03,

i just wanted to add my .02 for what BU is probably proud about. they are the largest provider of care for underserved people in all of boston. they give out tons of free care to all types of people: poor, immigrant, you name it. therefore they see a lot of diverse patients and medical situations. IMO this is would be BU's strongest "selling point" (i.e. a very strong clinical education)

When I interviewed there in October the Dean of Admissions also made a strong point about the various ways BU offers students to become Medical Dr's. In one class there are students who came straigh from undergrad, masters of Med Sci students, Public Health & Policy students and of course your run of the mill regular medical students. he went on about this at length and although I know some people have said this adds a lil more competition to the student body none of the first years I met had a problem with it. In a sense for my friends it seemed to lighten things up a bit bc they weren't always surrounded by the same peeps.

Black Bird,

Its hard for me to describe the school for you, really its about your overall impressions when you visit. Everything is pretty mordern and the whole complex is very large. Including the old Boston City Hospital and the newer Boston University Medical Center. Then there is the BU Health sciences which includes Public Health, Dental, MS, PHD, and maybe even Nursing. The City Medical Examiner is associated with the complex as well as the main branch of Boston EMS. One of the citys largest homless shelters is adjacent to the hospital.

As far as location, it is in Boston's South End and borders on Roxbury. This is the ideal location for the City hospital so, as Dylanfan described, they can treat the poorest, most indigent, people in Boston. The area is fairly safe because a lot of new business and housing has been developed in the area. The South End is probably the third most expensive place to purchase a home/condo in the Boston Area.

Dylan fan is correct, I think their "claim to fame" is the clinical years. From what I have read this is where BU really excels.

As for if your interviewed you have a good chance of being accepted? I don't know. There are all kinds of theorys out there on BU and intent. Really though they get a ton of applications so weeding through those has got to be hard. Here is some info about stats for the school I pulled of another thread. These are from US News. There may be another thread with more recent numbers but I couldn't find it.

Hi Everyone,
I just wanted to tell you guys to hang in there..I feel ur pain. I was in the same position last year. I interviewed at the end of January and was accepted 5 months later. It felt like forever and it was pretty frustrating at times, but now I'm a first year at BU and I couldn't be happier. I love this school and my classmates are awesome too. All the work and stress to get here was worth it in the end. Remember...there's always hope, don't give up! If you have any questions about the school or classes etc. I'll be happy to answer them. Good luck to you all! 😉

rs3, what were your numbers like and when was your application completed?

Hi tgifbos,
You asked about my stats...here they are....along with some other info.

GPA: 3.55
Science GPA: 3.67
MCAT: 10 (V) 8 (P) 10 (B) Q
Other than that, some of my major extracurriculars are volunteering in a homeless shelter, volunteering in the ER, worked in two research labs (one publication), and working full time in the OR as an Anesthesia Tech at Mass General in the year I took off after college.

As you can see its a combination of alot of different factors. If something is lacking in your application you should remember that it really is viewed as only one aspect of the whole picture. If you have any more questions please ask 😉

They just mailed out the first batch early this week... I got the call this morning 🙂 this is my first, wahoo!

congratulations dr deez!!! 🙂

I just got an interview invite from BU and had a few questions before I arrange an interview:

1)Do they have merit-based scholarships?
2)How is their financial aid?

Thanks

Thanks Lola! I wish you good luck with your schools too!!! It will all work out you will see!

alpha, the school has very little money to offer as merit based or even need based... you pretty much have to be independently wealthy (which i am not) 🙁 oh and their financial aid kinda sucks too. 🙁

Thanks Dr. Deez. I will be rescinding my application tomorrow.

alpha, i would wait and see what happens, or at least ask them about financial aid. dont make important life decisions based on solelywhat people on this board say.

ALso, i got an emailfrom my interviewer- Im in too. We should get letters this week.

good luck everyone

Hi people,
I'm interviewing at BU on January 31st. Is anyone going then? Also, any students want a guest for a few nights? I've been emailing people on the list and haven't gotten a response. I'd like to stay with a student cause I've never been to Boston and have NO idea whatsoever where I'm going.
Thanks

dr. deez, Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Way to go.

Did your interviewer call you?
Who did you interview with?
Are your stats posted anywhere?

Needless to say, I'm waiting on pins and needles for a response from BU.

Enjoy the acceptance feeling!!!
