I'm not sure if this is the right spot to ask this, but I was wondering how having half a fake front tooth might effect when I get braces. The tooth is pretty much cut right in half at a diagonal.

it would be wise if you asked a dentist in person so that he/she can see it and give you a better judgment. my 2 cents.

I've got a number of patients in orthodontic treatment currently with front teeth with extensive restorations, everything from full composite veneers, porcelain veneers, full crowns and BIG Class IV composite restorations. No problems from the orthodontists perspective about bonding the bracket to the restoration.

What my orthodontist often will tell the patient is that post treatment that they'll often either want that big restoration replaced (a HUGE percentage of post ortho patients will bleach very quickly after TX is done and hence the older restoration will not be a color match on their newly straightened teeth), or often the orthodontists I use(and it's not just my wife's practice I send people to 😉 )will tell the patients if they have a HUGE restoration on a front tooth that they'll WANT that tooth crowned or veneered post treatment.

No problems from the orthodontists perspective about bonding the bracket to the restoration.

That was precisely what I was wondering about. I know after I get my teeth straightened it will need replaced anyhow, but not becuase of coloration. The coloration is actually lighter than my other teeth because I had a few years of neglect on my teeth and they got a little bit off colored. My problem with the partial tooth is that it is somewhat misshaped, instead of being nice and rounded it kind of juts out into the other front tooth to the point that its hard to even get floss between the two teeth.
edit: in case anyones wondering how I got this fake part, I decided to jump over something when I was in mid teens, tripped, landed on a freshly paved parking lot, mouth first. I remember the dentist laughing when he saw that I still had tar stuck to the tooth(or what was left of it)

Your story is not uncommon. People like you who decide to jump over things and don't make it generate lots of emergency appointments at the dentist.

If you are not happy with the appearance of the tooth, I would definitely get it redone after the braces. You aren't stuck with it forever, there are lots of nice esthetic options out there today.

Yup, very, very common story. It often makes me look "really smart" to a new patient when I do their initial exam and notice 1 lone anterior tooth with a big restoration on it and no other mjor work on the adjacent teeth. I'll then ask (often in a slightly sarcastic tone) "what's the story behind that tooth?" The patient then generally starts smirking and/or blushing as they go into the story. The most common answers involve a) my brother/sister hit me/threw something at me when I was X years old or b) Bike accident or c) "I was just horsing around and ______ happened! These 3 answers will cover roughly 85% of lone anterior tooth big restorations 😀

The "best" answer I've heard (so far) was on a gentleman who had crowns on his two front teeth and a large, filling over on the adjacent tooth and no other restorations in his mouth. When I asked him "what happened here?" His answer was "I was doing a backflip off the diving board when I was 12, and wasn't far enough away from the board and hit the board with my 3 front teeth" 😱 😱 My reply, you win the front tooth explanation story!

That sounds incediblely painfull. My dad, who grew up on a farm lost one of his front teeth when a horse kicked him in the face. I always got a good laugh from that.
