I was very surprised during my interview at Bronx-Leb (BLEB). The faculty was extremely nice and actually asked probing questions to find out who their applicants really were. I truly appreciated this after I started to get the feeling that program directors already had a match list made up even before interviews.

It seemed like they saw a fairly good number number or patients and did a lot of basic surgeries - cataracts, strab, and a good amount of glaucoma. The chief was telling me about some plastics exposure that they do to fill the requirement down at NYEE. They also recently retained a path doc who seems very into resident education. Also, both the residents and faculty seem very happy and appear to have a good working environment.

Unfortunately, they do have some negatives too. It's a small program with a small clinic (although nice equipment). They have little trauma and it appears that they have little surgical retina exposure (everyone sees enough medical retina in the Bronx). If you're looking to be a good general ophthalmologist, then it looks like they definitely provide great training. If, however, you're looking to do a fellowship in a more competitive field then this may not be the program for you (although, they did send a past grad to Wilmer for cornea). I wrote "unfortunate reputation" becasue I think they're a better program despite what many think.

Good luck

Thank you for your input Paulie.
The small size actually apeals to me and the working environment is also very important. I am not a big fan of big univ. programs but even if i was it would be harder for me to get in that is why i am looking everywhere. If I am lucky to match in ophtho. I would like to do Cornea/Anterior Segment. How tough would that one be to get from a place like bronx-leb.?
Also how does B-L compare to St'Vincent CMC(manhat.), i know they (St.Vincent) were in great financial trouble this year.
Thank you and i hope to get some more people to reply

Good training? I heard it was lousy. This doesn't mean that the attendings are mean or evil, just that the residency is lousy.

Can you be more specific?
