There was a thread a while back that had stats for interviews vs. acceptances for many different schools. Could someone with MSAR post the stats for Brown (for IS and OOS)? Thanks.

Sorry to be nosy, and please feel free to not answer my question, but what are your stats? I am dying for an interview at Brown, but I know I am at the bottom of their totem pole 🙁

I don't know the exact stats at Brown, but they have a very low acceptance rate due to the fact that they get most of their students from the PLME program. It is an 8 year program that accepts students during their senior year of high school. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

According to admissions people, they will interview ~200 people out of ~4500 apps, and admit ~70 for ~30 standard admissions spots. Pretty tight!

Cool, thanks for the info.

dude, my stats are pretty similar to yours, and I got a Brown interview (1st invite :hardy:). So don't lose hope, it's possible. I'd love to learn more about Brown med, would appreciate any info from people here

Doublecortin,

Congrats on getting an interview at Brown! I'm still waiting to hear. I 've heard that they can send out acceptances as early as November. Do you have to give them an answer before hearing from other schools in March? If not, why do they accept people early? Thanks so much. ANyone else know the answer to this? Please advise.

best,
jaromic

Thanks,
I guess this confirms just how random this whole game is. Brown was the LAST school I expected to hear anything positive from since they have only like ~30-40 seats for regular AMCAS people. I applied there just for the hell of it, but now since I've done some research, I get the impression that the administration REALLY take care of their students, they do anything to keep them happy campers, which I guess is not the case at most school? I am curious why other people are so gung-ho about going to Brown? They are not that highly ranked?

:luck: To everyone!

If you get accepted early, do you have to make a decision about going to Brown (or any of the schools with rolling admissions) before you hear from schools that don't send acceptances until march? Thanks again.

don't know if brown is different, but the general rule is you can keep multiple acceptances (and pay them your $100) until May 15. after that you can only keep one plus the waitlists you are still waiting for.

that said, it is selfish to keep acceptances that you do not want. others DO want them. only keep if you are truly still considering the school.

Hey Doublecortin,
Would you mind giving out a few specifics (nothing too nosy)? When did you hear from Brown? How long was the gap between when you applied and you heard? Did you have to check your status page or was it email? Good luck... nail that interview!
BC

Got an interview from Brown for January- anyone from Providence that could tell a little bit about the "feel" of the city, if it is a good place to live, cost of living, etc?

Hey dude!

Thanks!

It's actually a pretty interesting story. After I submitted their 2ndary, they said they would mail you a letter with an address to a website(different from 2ndary) where you could monitor your status. Got a thin envelope from Brown after getting 2 rejections :scared:, and was like, "great, another rejection" but it was the address to the website. So I created a login, and after clicking on ten different "check your status" buttons, totally unexpected, there it was:
😍. . . has completed a preliminary review of your application, and we are delighted to invite you . . . 😍

I was complete ~mid Sept, and got the invite in 1 week-10 days after submitting 2ndary
Got the email invite in like 5 days after checking the status page (saved it in my inbox )

Yeah, I also wanna know, is there a night life, like clubs and bars and stuff?

:luck: Everyone!

how pathetic that you would describe this as "actually a pretty interesting story?" even more pathetic that i found it to actually BE an interesting story. we should all get out more.

I actually lived in Providence for 3 months over the summer. The main attraction in Providence is Brown University. The town has a very liberal/college feel. If you are looking for any major supermarket/Target-esque store you have to hop on the highway for about 5 minutes to go to Massachusetts. There is a Fresh Market in town, but it can get expensive to do everyday shopping there. The cost of living isn't too bad, but I guess it depends where you are comparing it to. If you are looking for about a one bedroom it will run about $1000 give or take $100. Obviously it would be much cheaper to share a place with other students, which most people do. There is a downtown area which is where the capitol building is located, and its a cute/upscale area. There is also a huge mall and lots of fancy eateries as well.

I got my interview invitation today from Brown! I'm interviewing 1/3. Can someone tell me if this is considered a late interview? I feel that since they accept so few people that my chances are pretty low for them, despite the interview invite.

Not to sound like a complete freak, but can you give more specifics about where this message actually was in the status check? Is it near the list of stuff they've received from you or is it when you click on decision? I am a total nerd, I know, but I REALLY want a Brown interview.

And to answer someone else's question, I want one so badly because Providence is awesome and my fiance is interviewing there next week and we really want to move there. Plus, Brown has a very unique curriculum that I am very drawn to. Please, please, please send me an invite Brown!

My boyfriend/soon to be fiance is currently a medical student at Brown. I'd give anything to go there 🙁

👍 Congrats!

I think they start interviewing in Oct/Nov, so not it is not. An April interview would be considered late. If you are not sure, you can pass your interview invite to PanDulce, I think she'd really appreciate it 😀

So what's so awesome about Providence? I am from SoCal btw, is there vibrant night life in Providence? How about salsa clubs, and such, and how about cultural life?

Thanks

Thanks for the good luck. I think I might call them tomorrow to check on the progress of my application. Don't know what else to do at this point to keep letting them know I'm interested.

About Providence, I am not the person to ask about night life and the like. I have only visited the city. But it's right on the ocean and very close to Cape Cod, my absolute favorite place in the world. Plus, it's an hour drive to Boston and very close drive to many other cool places. And the city itself has a really cool atmosphere that's unique. You'll see when you go there. I love the ocean and I love whale-watching and I LOVE LOVE LOVE Cape Cod. I think I would be happier in Providence than just about anywhere.

Pardon my ignorance, but what's so great about Cape Cod?😕

Pardon my ignorance, but what's so great about Cape Cod?😕

I just have an emotional attachment to it that's hard to explain. It's quaint and charming. There are a lot of fun little shops and tons of good restaurants. The beaches are beautiful, dunes everywhere. And it's just a really fun atmosphere for summer-time. You're from CA, so you probably would never understand why a midwestern girl has an attachment to the ocean that she can't explain! There just aren't places like Cape Cod in Wisconsin or Michigan or Minnesota (the three states I've spent most of my time in). I know plenty of people think the Cape is nothing special...but to me it is Heaven!

So being from CA, I guess I should expect this question a lot: " Why not stay in sunny CA, where it never snows, and go to a UC med school, why do you want to move to New England and endure brutal weather 9/12 months in the year?"

How do I dissuade them from thinking that I am likely to stay in CA? Any suggestions?😕😕😕

Just reply with exactly what it is that makes you a good fit. For me, it's their inclusive non-discrimination policy, the extensive hospital network since it's the only school in RI and you can go to almost any hospital and see any patient base, and the very early clinical experience being partnered with drs in the area. I also really like the focus on individual projects. Basically, the second i opened their brochure i found like 50 reasons that that school was for me. Leaf throguh it again before you go and find what abotu their curriculum and programs makes you feel that way. And honestly, if nothing does, I'd think seriously about that--they give out so few spots to people applying through AMCAS that if you don't fit, why take that spot away from someone who really really wants it?

I'm so excited for you! My fiance is interviewing for a job out there on Monday. I contacted Brown to tell them I'd be in the area (cause I could come out with him) and they got back to me saying they only interview on Thursdays so they couldn't accommodate me if they decided to interview me. So, of course, I replied right away that I am MORE THAN willing to come out any time and Brown is a top choice. Then last week I sent them an update on my employment and volunteering and then threw in a paragraph about the things about them that really fit with me. I am determined to get an interview there!

But I am excited about Cornell too. Those two have duked it out for years for my favorite school. Cornell is currently winning because they want to interview me!

aaj117, where on the status page does it change when you get an interview?

There are actually many things I discovered AFTER applying that I like about Brown. I was referring to the fact that schools on the East Coast are sometimes skeptical whether CA residents would really want to leave CA

Got an interview from Brown for January- anyone from Providence that could tell a little bit about the "feel" of the city, if it is a good place to live, cost of living, etc?

live for 15 yrs there, 5 minutes from the place.

Thayer Street = awesome.

huge music scene in providence...it's the center for all of RI (well, at least northern and central).

great, great, greattt city to be in-small, but, as someone pointed out, VERY liberal arts/hippie type (but also very sophisticated, if you'd like) feel.

also, Providence College, RI School of Design, and RIC are also colleges/uni's in providence.

Wow! I love your determination! You surely deserve an invite 👍

I would trade my Brown invite for your Cornell 😉

Yeah I really am lucky to have that Cornell interview. I seriously can't wait!!

ohh yeahhh. the place is nuts. providence used to be a **** town until about 20 yrs ago...it's young and alive, but also sophisticated.

plenty of nightlife!! (again, thayer street/college hill area)

You look like a top notch candidate, you really deserve that Cornell invite:luck:

You just made my eyes water! Thank you for the compliment. I think I get so stressed out on this message board because it seems like everyone has done more, has an even better GPA or better MCAT. Plus, not everyone is exactly encouraging to other people. So, thank you. And I think you will find that Providence is awesome, so super good luck on your Brown invite. You seem like a great person, and I'm sure any med school would be lucky to have you!

What are girls like in Providence 😀?

I guess I will answer most of your questions since I was PLME and am a MS1 at Brown Med.

Honestly, there isnt much time to go out. The night life if geared for undergrads. There are quite a few bars/clubs (esp. downtown) but would you want to go to Fish Co. on a Wed night?? Only is you want to hook up with a drunk freshman.....

As for dance studios, Brown does have a ballroom dance group, there are a few clubs for salsa night, and there are "dance parties" that med students have.

What are girls like in Providence 😀?

It depends on your type...if you want the hippie look then there is plenty, if you want the typical Cali girl look, you would have to go to Southern RI and hang out at URI.

So being from CA, I guess I should expect this question a lot: " Why not stay in sunny CA, where it never snows, and go to a UC med school, why do you want to move to New England and endure brutal weather 9/12 months in the year?"

I am from CA and frankly, I hate providence, Boston is so much more fun and when there is time to get out there its worth it (night life is amazing there). The weather is horrible, humidity sucks, snow is only awesome when it first falls...the streets on college hill get plowed only on the weekdays and it ices over a lot and really really really sucks.

Housing out here sucks too. There are a few places that have a central A/C and all the rest screw you over and make you buy a window unit...and trust me, when its super humid and nasty in August and Sept. then you will miss CA weather (and this comes from someone from Fresno where its like 100+ in the summer)

Thanks for such detailed response CindyLou,
so would you say social life of Brown Med students is not so great?

the social life is good if you want it to be good.

but there are so many exams that come at you so fast, its really hard to slack off and go out.

its a BIG change from undergrad....in class/lab/community mentor sites/assisted living sites will eat your time up. count on being busy from 9-5 mon-fri (occassionally we get afternoons off, and reading days before exams)

im also a current brown student and ive had a great time here...it all depends on what you consider a great social life. I have at least one night a week/weekend to chill with my friends and go out, and i have been to bars and clubs in Providence but clubs in Providence generally suck. I've also been to parties every so often and I have a good time. Obviously you are not going to find anything close to a club scene in Providence especially compared to NY or Boston to a certain extent but I've made the 3 hr drive to NYC. You just need to accept that no matter what medical school you go to, you are going to be in class almost all day and studying the rest of the time, and you readjust your expectations of a social life, this is not a Brown thing. But I know some people who regularly go salsa dancing, or what have you, everyone has stuff they want to do and they make time.

I've lived almost exclusively on the east coast in urban areas and housing in Providence can run from kinda crappy to terrific, but it is much much cheaper than living in NYC or Boston. I can't compare to the west coast but I was really happy with the housing situation here, and I didn't find it unbearable during the summer, even without AC. If you have any questions about curriculum or whatever feel free to ask me

Congrats on your Columbia 👍invite, hereIcome!

You said you emailed Cornell when you got Mount Sinai, how did you ask them for an invite (in general terms)? I got an invite from Einstein, do you think I should email Cornell and Columbia?

Thanks

Thanks, Doublecortin!

I emailed Cornell, Columbia, and NYU. I don't really think it sways their decision about an interview in any way, but they've been very accommodating for timing. I just said who I was, that I would be in the area for another interview on Dec. 19th and should they choose to interview me as well, I would greatly appreciate a date within that week, if possible. Then I said that I would, of course, be willing to come back at a later date if they were not yet ready to make a decision on my application. Hope this helps.

And to the current Brown students- what should a girl do who REALLY wants to interview there and hasn't heard anything yet?

Brown I think is pretty receptive to letters that state why you have strong ties to providence or Brown, friends family work relationship or whatever, they may look for a record of humanistic volunteering (although lately they are really keen on research too). The mission statement is very explicit about training physicians who want to improve social welfare, among other things. I'd send them a letter saying why you would really fit in at Brown and why you prefer it to other places.

I applied to Brown and have been complete for about...2 weeks? I was a varsity athlete at a Big Ten school, volunteered at the university hospital for 1.5 years, shadowed a neonatalogist at a local hospital, tutored AP bio students for 1 year, and have been doing independent research for the plastic surgery department since April. My GPA is a 3.84...my MCAT was a 32O with a low verbal score.

It sounds like Brown really looks for non-traditional components in their applicants? Do I have a chance to interview...?
