hey guys i really need you help and advise... i got accepted in both Howard dental school and Boston dental school (BU) i am so torn between the two schools but here is what i think of both school

Howard

pros: 1) cheap ( i will save around 150 000 over the four years if i picked howard over the BU)
2) great professor and faculty are very friendly
3) they have all specialization ( and i really want to specialize )

Cons : 1) some of students hate it there ( my tour guy seemd like he didnt like it there)
2) i dont know ppl keep saying it is not good school and it will affect me if i want to specialize or looking for a practice
3) rough neighborhood

BU

pros: 1) apex and externship ( i am not so sure about apex if it is really a plus thing)
2) alot of research oppurtunity
3) all the students there love the school
4) professors and faculty are so friendly and helpful
5) beautiful Boston

Cons: 1) soooooo expensive
2) i heard they kinda have some problems getting patients (but all students told me they have no problem)

so again yeh i want to specialize so what you guys think ?? if you were me which one would you pick ?

do you guys know anything about their clinical experience ??
i really need help picking one of those two !!!

The only thing bad about Howard is the neighborhood, everything else is great. I think it's a no brainer, HOWARD!

from what i've heard, having all specialization on site may be a bad thing.

all unique and complex cases will be referred to the residents.

My opinion of the APEX program is that it's not as great as they make it out to be. You're still paying the gigantic tuition during the 2 months you're on APEX while getting paid minimum wage. It's not like you're learning any special skills during this time either. It's just shadowing. I can shadow anytime I want. I don't need BU to help me find a shadowing job... 🙁

I liked the environment at BU though. very friendly and non-competitive

howard if you are black................. BU if you are white..

what if you're not black or white? lol 🙄

honestly i can see myself fit into both schools so it is not a problem for me. but does it matter where i go to school ? should i just save the 150 000

tht is such a grey area.. .. then i wouldnt know..

BU. Howard? Are you seriously serious? Do you know what Howard is? Don't try to be unique by letting us know you're unorthodox enough to actually even consider Howard given a choice when you are not black. It's not funny; and it HAS been done before. 😍

i am really serious and i dont know which one to pick for real.... do u think BU worth 150 000 over the four years if i am getting the same degree ??!! thats what everyone told me so far. i might be wrong but i really need more info for both schools. so would you plz share ? and why u think howard is really bad ? thank you 🙂

Totally off the topic but whe did you get accepted to BU?

i know its no brainer but meharry is cheaper and tufts is expensive but its got class. now does it matter what school we go too? i don't know. however, i don't want to feel like a second class dentist when i graduate.

I don't know much about Howard, but Boston is a great, great, great city to live in -- and remember, it is four years of your life, not just a degree.

thanks guys for you reply. here is the thing we all know that dental school is very tough and you will spend most of your time studying. i know Boston is beautiful i really liked it but i think i wouldnt enjoy Boston that much while attending dental school. so the city for me doesnt matter that much. but graduating from Howard would make me a second class dentist ? is it because their entrance stats ? or they don't educate you good enough to be a great dentist? anyone knows difference between their clinicals ? i heard that howard grad are considered to be one of the most skilled students in residency!!

Boston is the place to be, but I'm definitely biased! The difference is actually just $100k but thats still a significant amount. Nonetheless graduating from BU will probably give you a more reputable dental degree than Howard. Speciality programs will prob view a BU candidate in the top 10% of their class more highly than a Howard candidate with the same rank. But again this is just an opinion (much like everyone else's).

$150,000 is really $300,000 when you factor in interest. That's like 2 years salary as an associate. Think about it.

You take the same boards as someone who graduates from Harvard, Temple, and Maryland. You are expected to provide a certain level of quality and care when dealing with patients and all accredited schools will train you to do this. How well you utilize the training is a different story.

this is so true, every student take the same board and has to have those qualifications to be a good dentist 👍. i think i am leaning toward Howard now !!

i wasn't even talking about howard but i was just wondering it might help going to a school with more prestige. yes, howard students have great clinical skills, but doesn't school name helps to be more competitive when apply for a job? besides the board and other things that comes with it

yeh izzy this is what i am asking about !! plus now i heard that board scores is going to be pass/fail so going to a school with more prestige will help getting a job or going for specialization ?!!

Well if you go to HU, make sure you find a good church :::cough cough::: Greater Mount Calvary :::Cough Cough::: cause I can ASSURE you that you will be praying ALL THE TIME!

if you are...

white --> BU
black --> Howard

white + black --> BU

black + minority but looks white --> BU
black + minority and books black --> Howard

For all the people that think HU dental school is just full of black people, you are highly mistaken...and just because you're black doesn't make it the best decision...there is more to a school than the color of there students....ignorance is bliss.

but graduating from Howard would make me a second class dentist ? QUOTE]

What? Have you ever asked your doctor or dentist where they went to school, and then asked them NOT to treat you because of where they went? If you pass your boards, you are a dentist through and through. And if you are planning of specializing, you can go to a more expensive school and become and first class dentist if it is worrying you so much.

It sounds like you are clinging to a reason to go to BU. Sounds like for the prestige. If you think it makes a difference and is worth the price difference, then you already have your mind made up.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! Gosh, I am tired of YOU people bashing Meharry and Howard as if you won't be a good dentist if you graduate from there!!!! You guys are so stupid and annoying as f&*%$!!! 👎 GROW UP!!!! :laugh:

PREACH!!!! :laugh: lol Most of these people on SDN make me want to delete my account because they are so ignorant and I can't believe that I would be going to school with some of these...."people" who think like that. 👎 But then again, welcome to the real world right? lol :laugh:
