Hi guys,

I applied to BCOM, and I got a rejection on Friday, It was a little strange, I dont have superb stats, but I have about a 3.4 CGPA, and a 3.2 SGPA, with a 26 MCAT.

They asked for my secondary application and just straight up rejected me a few days later even though Im planning on rewriting my MCAT in September (9th).

I do feel that the school tried to make money by getting my secondary and throwing it away but this maybe just my own opinion. Are there schools that will give anyone with a pulse a secondary that I should be ware of.

Did you check to see if maybe there isn't some sort of minimum requirement you did not meet that caused them to screen you out right off the bat? I'd give them a call if I were you. I hear it's always wise to ask why a school rejected you to diagnose where you can improve your app

Is this something they would entertain? I would think most schools just ignore you.

I am a re-applicant from last cycle and some schools didnt even send rejection letters and ignore follow ups on status.

Hmmm....SGPA is low. Not sure about your EC's. Did you fit BCOM's mission? Are you from their geographic area? Unless someone has outstanding stats, applying to and getting accepted to a specific med school is like a lottery. Common advice on SDN is to apply broadly. i.e., 15+ schools and just see who is really interested in your profile.

Well, I mean they aren't going to spend an hour on the phone with you telling you what all the tiny factors were that lead to your rejection, but they'll steer you in the right direction. I think it's pretty common for them to answer these questions for students

I understand the frustration, but I don't think it's appropriate to insinuate they just wanted your money. If you were rejected for a valid reason, that's just how this game is played. I would follow up to assure there isn't some requirement you just don't have.

I understand what youre trying to say, that is what I am trying to see. There are some schools that DO give secondaries out to anyone with a pulse, I am just trying to find out what those are. For example GWU (its an MD school, but still), gives out secondaries to almost everyone.

BCOM definitely does screen, they say so on their website. Perhaps it was something in your secondary they didn't believe fit their mission?

Thanks will do so, already did sort of. Applying to all DO schools.

Im not from their area, but I do have lots of hours spent in under-served areas either volunteering or shadowing. I have about 300 hours in northern Pennsylvania, a few in the mid west, a couple in Oakland, CA . And I did emphasize that I was looking to end up practicing in an undeserved area which is why it met my mission. I just feel like with the notification that I will have a new MCAT taken in September, a little more waiting would have been better.

So am I going to even get in anywhere out of the 30 schools I applied to?
Im confused because I heard most of the people getting into the upper tier DO schools are around 3.5-3.6 with 30 MCATS (of course some higher)
I was told to apply to the new schools. Apply early.

Contact the school, they're very open. Also, remember that schools see posts on SDN and can find out who you are easily. Just reach out to them and continue to show interest. Good luck! Unless there's a major flag somewhere on your app or a glitch, I think you'll get in somewhere

Wow this scares me, your stats and EC seem solid... I would definitely contact them if I were you. My stats are super similar to yours and I haven't heard back yet

Your SGPA is the problem. You'll be DOA at my school as well. Best luck will be with the newest schools. Forget LUCOM, though.

LUCOM and VCOM gave me rejections last year, not even a secondary. I have made sure to avoid those schools this application cycle.

Quick question, why does everyone hate on LUCOM, even my DO application adviser hated on it.

Do a search on SDN. Your question will be answered promptly!

Do a quick thread search and you'll have all the info your heart desires.

I looked it up and found several threads that say the same thing you do, look it up. The most I could find is they mix religious teaching values into their medical school curriculum. Setting last years rejection aside, someone with my stats, wouldnt it still be better to get at least one acceptance from LUCOM than be rejected all together (AGAIN).

When did you apply last cycle? When were the secondary applications submitted? How is your PS? Did you receive any II's?

I've got a feeling you have some red flags in your application that's causing all these rejections.

BCOM had a red line of ~3.25 for sGPA last cycle. OP should avoid CUSOM as well.

For BCOM, this is not true. I have been in contact with many admission reps from BCOM and all have told me that the cut off is a 3.o c/sci gpa.

This is quite telling.

Well, there are official floors for stats, and there are effective floors for stats.

Applied late last cycle, I am aware, September, I had it verified and most schools received them in about 3 weeks. Secondaries were/are being submitted approximately 48 hours after receiving them (always less, never more time than this).

There are no red flags, I didnt get any interviews but I did get a bunch of interview waitlists at about 7 or 8 of the 20 schools I applied to

By telling do you mean as to the schools as a whole and how they portray their image or as to my chance of acceptance? Because I know for a fact I meet VCOMS standards (or atleast met them considering stats go up every year). And for schools like MWU com and AZcom, and Touro NV to waitlist me for an interview and I guess the other schools to ignore the app all together doesnt make much sense.

September isn't super late. Are you sure you don't have any IA's? Which schools did you apply to? What state are you from?

You got primary rejections to VCOM and LUCOM? You didn't receive a secondary? That's odd, did you not meet some minimum requirements?

The problem with this forum which scares me is that other schools will be able to see this and identify who I am, but Id rather be honest. I felt VCOM threw my app away or just forgot about me. They have been known(according to the forums) to take a really long time to process applications. I think I recieved their notification that your app has been received late as well (November), then December is kind of understood a month not much gets done due to the holidays, Until mid-end may'ish, I didnt hear a word from them although I kept calling them every 5-6 weeks to see if any changes in my status were made. Same response every time, currently under review. May I just got a rejection and an invite to their postbacc program

I promise you I am 21 years old and I havent had my first beer yet. I dont even have a traffic violation. Theres honestly no red flag on my App that I can think of. I wanted to ask if my liberty university rejection might have been due to being non-catholic, (although I mentioned and emphasized Ive spent my entire level in catholic schools and college)

What are IA's?

I think September is considered late for someone with my stats. If I had a 3.5+ and a 29+ mcat maybe I wouldve been better off but I am on the lower end of the spectrum.

I have no experience because its my first cycle but someone wrote this on my wall when I posted this question.

Early/Normal=anything before September/October (average stats, atleast 3.3-3.4gpa, 500 mcat)

Late = anything after September (only apply if you have stellar stats, >3.4 +503 mcat)

If snow has fallen south of the mason dixon......don't apply unless you have a 3.7 and 510+

Use the search function, there is a lot of chatter on this...

See Im confused because people were telling my friend with slightly lower stats, 3.3 cgpa and 3.1 but the same MCAT score that he has almost 0 change of getting into a DO school when he asked a question if applying early helps with low stats.

oh my god. I applied to this school too, but I have a 507 mcat and like 3.28 cumulative gpa...still haven't received my secondary cause my transcripts are to be verified...what do you think my chances are? :/

LITERALLY EVERYONE CALM DOWN.

People are concerned because getting into medical school is important to them. I planned alot of my undergrad career around getting into medical school. I wish I chose a different institution because even though I maintained between the top 10-20% of my classes I still got this crappy gpa.

Most of us really want to become physicians and the ever increasing stats is creepy. I graduated highschool in 2012 and around the following summer, an admissions officer at an MD school in Maryland said I need a 3.5 and a 30 to get into their program. Now its like most MD schools dont even look at people with a 3.5 and a 30, infact those stats are DO stats now. Infact a new MD school which opened up around 2011 or so (TCMC) in Pennsylvania used to take an average of 29 MCAT.

I got my first B- in organic chemistry my third quarter and I googled what to do if my GPA falls below 3.4 or MCAT falls below 30. They recommended applying to osteopathic schools, (DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT TRYING TO PUT DOWN OSTEOPATHIC MEDICAL SCHOOLS, I AM JUST RECITING WHAT THEY TOLD ME). And now people are being told that they cant even get into osteopathic medical schools with a 3.3-3.4 gpa.

That's right guys, calm down.

I have done like 9 secondaries so far, and they are all free on my part (since I have AACOMAS fee waiver). Apparently all are giving me a vibe that they are interested.

Sorry for the OPs about BCOM. I still did not hear anything from them, and I belong to the first group who received secondary (most of them I believed have II). I believed it contained many factors too, like if you do a video, it will be faster processed (in opposition to write an essay, which take time to read). Good luck on the rest of the cycle.

Well you can get into schools with a 3.3-3.4 but you need higher then average Mcats, good letters of rec, Ec's, and a great personal statement.
Sadly competition is becoming more and more fierce and it isn't going to get any easier to be honest. I think most people knew that coming in but you shouldn't give up. If something isn't working correctly, then call, ask what you did wrong and try to fix the mistake. That's the only thing you can do.

Actually now that you mention it, I remember them asking for a video, And it makes sense now, thanks for reminding me 🙂

For BCOM, I believe they are very mission oriented so they maybe look at primaries as a top priority. This will yield them students who are most likely to come to the school, including high stats people. I don't believe they will be using an MCAT and GPA screening tool that readily until they have had students for several years. Otherwise they will have mainly high stats students who will get accepted and drop like flies after getting into another school.

Don't worry it is just one school of many. I had the same problem with PNWU, where I sent my secondary and 48 hours later they gave me a rejection! My state wasn't that far off from their school, but then again wasn't part of the 5 they serve.

As for VCOM, keep at them. Make sure you application is complete and not just received. This may have caused issues with you not getting a secondary. Make sure you keep calling like you did in the past. Also, I had secondaries from VCOM sent to my spam folder and would have to call them to ask them to send it to me again. There is something up with their emails.

Main thing is to do what you can. There is only so much you can do in the process.

Thanks, Ill keep that in mind. I am 99% confident it wasnt a spam email but I will pay attention this year as well to my spam folder, its a school I actually would like to get into, but who knows.

You should definitely apply to Touro-CA if you get a monster MCAT score on your retake. They don't give a damn about GPA's as long as they're above 3.1ish (not really a barrier to entry since this is standard at ALL medical schools). The higher the MCAT the lower the GPA for Touro. They're obsessed with high MCAT scores so a nice 513+ aka 32 or 33 should have them licking their chops. How do I know? Two friends of mine were accepted this past cycle with 3.3/3.2 GPAs, 33 MCATs, weak ECs, very little patient hours. Can't imagine the dispicable things they'd do for a 38 or 39 MCAT...

I actually shadowed at Touro, and I will work on my MCAT, I hope to get in over there, but Ill probably be rejected before my September MCAT score comes out, nevertheless, Ill keep studying for it.

Thanks!

Look, it might be just a fluke. VCOM tossed my application last cycle (no II) and I believe BCOM would've too since they are heavily mission oriented and I have no ties to New Mexico. I had much higher stats too and much higher than their averages. Don't worry about VCOM, BCOM, and Liberty.

You should focus on the schools that are well within reach for you. RVU, CUSOM, NYIT-AR, KCOM, and perhaps LECOM would be my recommendation. Which state are you from?

BCOM is mission heavy like crazy. Won't get love w/o ties or commitment to mission

People chill. Just go look at last years underdawgs thread and that is only out of the small number of SDN posters. If you have a 3.2/3.2/500 you have a decent chance of getting into a DO school. I know people with those stats who got into some of the "top tier" schools and none of them had any special ECs or were URM.

I also know people with 3.8/3.7/508 MCAT's who were also rejected from "top-tier" schools. It's really hard to predict who will get in and who wouldn't.

I would also like to say that almost all the students in my class had at least 1 year off and did something outside of schools and boosted their EC's.
