Hello!

So I am thinking about taking a business class or two before matriculation next fall (I get free classes as a FT employee of my university). I have never taken any sort of business class and think it would be helpful for the future. Anyone have any idea which class (or two) would be the most applicable for a career as a physician?

I took a few and enjoyed them. It depends on what you are interested. Basic accounting , strategy, Econ, finance are all things that I enjoyed.

Since I have no business background, I want to take one or two that would be most applicable to life as a future physician.

Maybe macro/Micro and a finance class?? This is like a foreign language to me and I do not want to be one of those physicians who knows zilch about business

I guess my question was , do you see yourself in private practice or do you see yourself using it to make investment decisions or are you the inventor type.

Application in private practice and possible investment decisions would be what I am most interested in learning about

For investment I would take finance and accounting. Dr.andrew lo at mit has an amazing set of recorded lectures that are free. I don't know how viable private practice will be in the future but you might want to take marketing, accounting, strategy and a health policy class, and macro. There are a lot of regulatory and billing hurdles for private practice I am unsure if there are any classes offered to help understand the financial aspects of managing something like that.

Macro/Micro Econ are interesting but really applicable to real world use.

General Business Law may help, which should have contracts. Too bad schools dont offer a general personal financial management course covering all the things that one would we encounter in life such as banking, taxes, insurance, mortgages, budgeting, credit/loans, debt, retirement vehicles, etc.

You may find health economics interesting to see how the big picture around you works in medicine

A general personal financial mangement class would be perfect... any recommendations on learning this on my own?

I will look up Andrew Lo, thanks! Which finance/accounting class do you think would be the best for learning about investment strategy?

Principals of Accounting or Personal Finance.
Accounting will have a lot of info on how to organize expenses and money and also how to prevent fraud and embezzlement in a small organization.

Jeez when I read the thread's title "business class" I thought you were referring to flying in business class haha.
