BYU and DO schools.

Whoa! AZCOM matriculated 37 BYU grads in 2012. I knew AZCOM has a lot of LDS students (I'll be one of them come August) but thirty-seven! And that's just BYU... that doesn't even count BYU-Idaho, Utah State, UofU, UVU, SUU, Idaho State, ASU, etc, which have large numbers of Mormon students as well.

I'm glad you excluded Dixie State from that list as well

Thats cause the rest of Utah tries to collectively forget about Ogden.

Wait, Ogden is part of Utah?

Never heard of Ogden? Is that even part of the United States? 😛

It was funny when I took a history of Michigan course last year, and my teacher kept saying "John Smith" which of course he meant to say "Joseph Smith" when talking about Mormons. I didn't know whether to correct him or not, lol. Good thing I didn't have this class when I was like three because I totally would have been like, "Do you know what you're talking about?"

Michigan also at one time had a self-proclaimed "Mormon" King which I think totals Michigan to having been under the rule of four or so kings over the course of the last several hundred years. Some of those families who didn't follow Bringham Young to Utah after Smith died settled down with Strang and created a community on Beaver Island (yes, I almost choked on whatever I was eating when I was in lecture...beavers....mulitple wives....all rolled up into one island, lol). In four years of early morning seminary, I never learned about this event in history so close to where I grew up, but since these people chose not to go to Utah, then they were considered part of the official Mormon faith. Strang ended up being murdered by some of the members of his community, and those that practiced "Mormonism" were forced to leave.

Why didn't BYU compete for opening a DO school? Imagine how cut throat competitive that place would be...

BYU's president( who use to be the dean of the school of medicine at university of utah) has basically said that it would cost way too much to open a med school, and pretty much made it seem like there is no way byu will open a med school in the future. Or that is some rumor I heard.

You're right he said don't count on one anytime soon, but it would be nice if they did.

Funny how some schools open med schools to make money, and other schools don't open med schools be because it would be too expensive.

Though BYU is a special case since the LDS Church subsidizes the cost of educating students, keeping tuition low... doing the same for a med school would be extremely expensive.

I'm assuming that serving a 2 year mission (which I'm sure a lot of the BYU students did) is also a big leg up when it comes to applying. It is a life experience that not only brings maturity, communication skills, and exposure to the underserved... but also shows commitment and dedication.

Unfortunately, that applies to most schools except for the U of U, where such experiences are the norm.

Oh c'mon leaving out Weber State??? 😀

Seriously! 😉 Weber State Weber State GREAT GREAT GREAT!! Best pre-med undergrad EVER! Especially that Pre-SOMA Pres and AMSA Secretary 😀

Understandable but maybe if they'd solicit better from their large pool of past students that are now doctors they could fund raise in no time . Sounds more like a dis-interest in entering the med education arena, which is definitely understandable. For some schools it would just be a resource drain. I go to one of the biggest schools in the country that understands that and so focuses on other areas of medicine (i.e. no MD program) but ended up partnering with the new Mayo med school. Play smarter not harder

Is that Samuelson? Or is he still the dean at the U?

I always forget about Ogden...it's forgettable I guess. When I think of Utah - I just think of SLC, PC, and I will never forget Kamas (mainly because that's where I went to HS - for better or worse, lol).

As far as LECOM and Utah goes - it's the current plan to open a campus out there in the next few years. As others have said, they are currently working on getting rotations set up there. If they had them in place when I started rotations, I would've gone back to Utah for my rotations. I miss the mountains, my family and friends that are still in Utah.

I love me some UVU! Represent!

I asked him face-to-face back in 2005 about BYU opening a medical school, his response:

1) Cost of facilities
2) Cost of faculty
3) Cost of construction
4) Lack of rotation opportunities
5) Beyond BYUs educational mission (meaning BYUs focus is uGrad)

I've heard him talk about it too and although he said the same things that you said above for the most part he was a little different in talking to him this year. He said that they would like to open a medical school if it was feasible, but that it just wasn't at this time. It may be beyond BYU's mission right now, but they have a law school and tons of graduate opportunities so I don't think that is a major issue IMO.

Whatever way you look at it though it's not going to happen anytime soon 🙂 ...especially if LECOM opens a DO school in Provo it would be overkill to have two med schools without enough rotation spots in such a small area.

Oh please Ogden is AWESOME! That is if you like to have fun. I guess if that's not your thing, then I understand your dislike for Ogden. The Sandlot was filmed here, along with Airbud! Ogden UT was ranked the #2 best place in the country for skiing by Powder Magazine, and it was ranked #11 in the U.S. by Forbes Magazine for Best Place in US for Business and Careers (yes Provo was #2 and SLC #20). So Ogden rocks all your faces people. (minus the ghetto area of course)

Ok but realistically, I love Ogden mostly for the outdoor scene. All the rock climbing, hiking, trail running, trails for longboarding/running/cycling, and anything else outdoors you can want. Come to Ogden and I'll show you what you're missing out on!

Well, Ricks was never going to be a four-year school. 😉. Things can change. I agree though, I don't see BYU having a med school, at least not in the foreseeable future.

I love Ogden... I've driven through it many times.

Yes BYU's president is Cecil Samuelson. TO make make things more confusing though, his brother Wayne is a vice dean at Utah. In charge of admissions I believe.

 I went up there not too long ago to present research....that place is sketchy

Yeah, once you pass that torn down graffiti building, going north on i-15, you know you've left the civilized world behind. I hear that in Ogden, their hipsters actually wear REAL thrift shop clothing, and not the pretend kind you get at Urban Outfitters. Scary place :scared:

...I love that its known as the Ghetto of Utah. Thats what we'd always say when we went there...headed to the ghetto. haha

:meanie:

Ok, Ogden is at least kind of cool...dont they have the indoor skydiving up there?

You bet your sweet bippie they do! Real skydiving also. Flowrider also. Good place to be! Just don't live in the ghetto part and you're good!

Yep, med schools are a huge money sink in a lot of cases. I think BYU would be well-served to start one, though. Their rotation sites could be spread out to areas with high LDS populations.

They certainly could have some killer Ob rotations/residencies.
