hey CVRD! i don't mean to get ahead of myself... but i have a pup too, perhaps we can set up play dates... he loves to wrestle with big dogs haha. wow 2 newfies! how will you get them over there!! i am stressing about this already.

LOL. Of course! I study in the UK at the moment already, so it won't be a problem 😀. Just get your paperwork done EARLY ! (i.e. must have microchip before rabies vaccination, and MUST wait 6 months after the rabies test result (not just the vaccine, but after the result) to be allowed to bring in the UK, that's what takes the longest..!). If you have a short-snouted dog, be prepared that at least Delta and British Airways won't fly him; just read from the papers that they tightened their regulations..!

Congrats FutureVet3000 on your acceptance and your SO's acceptance! Is he accepted to the GEP as well?

As for finding a place...

Most of the time you won't be able to get a place by looking online. Most landlords (and agencies) want to meet you or you have to sign paperwork and stuff in person. Plus it's always a good idea to check out the flat before you sign anything. Pictures can be deceiving. It's difficult (from what I hear) to find a place that will take animals. You can offer to pay a little bit more per month (someone in my class did that), but sometimes just presenting yourself like you're a mature adult and not a crazy college kid is enough to convince them (if possible). Sometimes bringing your animal with you can help also.

If you really want them here, then it'll happen. You have to be patient. And it will cost you a lot of money. Someone said there is an extra fee for dogs who weigh >100lbs (with their kennel that must be a certain size or they can't fly).

As for pets specifically.. Check the DEFRA site for all the details on bringing your pooches. They are very strict and a lot of things require precisely timed procedures. If you're serious about coming to Edinburgh then I suggest you start ASAP. If you wait until almost February to do the rabies vaccine then you might find yourself SOL by the time classes start. There are also certain breeds that are NOT allowed here so pay attention to that! There aren't too many exceptions but I know pitbulls are not allowed in this country (yet I see Staffies everywhere).

Flyhi took the QMII over with her two (small) dogs. And if I remember correctly, she stayed in a pet friendly B&B for a few days until she found a pet friendly place. Another girl in the 5 year programme came over with her dog by plane. I can't remember her SDN name. And (I don't know that she ever comes on the forums anymore) DogTyred is getting hers over here at the end of this month (hopefully). And then two others in my class had their animals professionally shipped over since they couldn't bring their animals with them when they first came in August since they were living in Pollack.

I hope everyone else still waiting to hear back gets good news soon! It's 13:30 here now so the day isn't over yet! 😀

Congrats to those who have already been accepted!!!
I was wondering if those already in the program know if they are going to accept late apps again this year?

And how many students from the states there usually are in each class. Thanks!
Edit: NM about the statistics... I finally found a file from Edinburgh regarding this. Last year they had 426 international applicants, 54 offers and 31 accepts.

Congrats CVRD and futrevet!!!

I'm been accepted to the GEP too!!!

I think I've fully terrorized my cats and horses with all my excitement! Totally the best Christmas present ever 🙂

Here's hoping there will be more happy posts on this thread:xf:

I received an email this morning, I got an offer!!😀😀😀 I'm in the five year program, I wonder what the conditions could be, anyone have any ideas?

Of course I had it set in my mind that we wouldn't hear for a while, so miraculously I think I slept through the night... but lo and behold, at 4 AM my acceptance email to the GEP arrived!! Congratulations to everyone accepted! I am over the moon for all of us. 😀

CONGRATS EVERYONE!!!!:soexcited:I got an email too this morning to the GEP!!! I can't believe it....First acceptance ever....I am still shaking with the excitement. It is so nice to finally hear (or read) the words, "congratulate you" instead of "we regret to inform you..." I still don't know what to do with myself!!!!!!

thanks for that advice chii chan... i am going to take my dog to work tomorrow to get that rabies titer sent out stat. he's already microchipped (with a 15 dig international chip) and got his rabies vaccine for this year. we are well on our way 🙂

congrats to everyone else hearing back!! :hardy: is anyone else here trying to bring a dog with them! i realize this is my first acceptance and still have a few state schools to hear from (penn being my IS) but after my denial to CSU, edinburgh moved up to numero uno on my list... so i couldn't be more excited!

I will probably bring one of my dogs with me, the other two will stay with my hubby back in the states. I know the feeling, financially, if I get into my IS, I would probably go there, but that is a real long shot at this point since I have been rejected from them many, many times. I am REALLY excited about Edinburgh it is definitely my top choice!!

I remember a member from last year who goes to Dick and she brought her dogs over on the Queen Mary (?). If I bring my girl over with me I am seriously going to look into that method...kinda feel like I am putting the cart before the horse. So many things flying around in my brain! Ok, better get off to work so I can make $ to pay for vet school now!

Congrats guys! I got mine too! I got into the 4 year program as well! I have an IS school to see about first (VMRCVM) which will be a financially smarter school to go to but I am not so sure I'll get in so we will have to see. If I go to Edinburgh then I will definitely be bringing my two Border Collies. I herd and compete in sheepdog trials with my dogs so there is no way I will be passing up THAT opportunity. I think for me, I would need a roommate who can't bring their pup(s) over who could live vicariously through me and my dogs. Two active Border Collies in one house is enough I think.

Keep in mind that the QM2 books up VERY fast for kennel space. Flyhi went last year and took her dogs - she's a good person to talk to.

Anyone thinking of bringing pets with them, check out the DEFRA website for their Pets Travel Scheme now - there are a ton of regulations and things to do starting months in advance if you want your fur-children to come with you. I've become the resident expert on traveling with pets at my vet clinic after considering doing it myself last year!

I am new to SDN, but I really enjoy reading these threads, so thought I would start contributing - got my acceptance email to the 5 year program this morning! Looking forward to hopefully meeting some of y'all, and congrats to everyone!

my dog is a sheltie/shepard mix, and acts like he needs sheep to herd (he herds dogs at the park). maybe they could be friends?

I also woke up to an acceptance to the 5 year program! So excited! Congrats to everyone who heard good news today, and fingers crossed for everyone still waiting!

I really love the idea of the 5 year program, but it is unfortunately probably going to take Edinburgh out of serious running for me🙁. But for now I am going to continue with fun thoughts of life in Scotland! At this point in my life, I am really reading for change and an adventure!

I got accepted to the 4 year program too!

Wow congrats to everyone else with acceptances! I guess they're finally getting through them.

I just finished adding my class schedule into my calender for January to June and the GEPs are going to be busy!!! Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions. I'll try to keep up with this thread, but there's a good chance I'll be MIA until about May after AB3 exams and the AHWAFS exams. 😱

Most definitely with my puppy, my older bitch is well...a bitch lol

I'm losing hope...

Dont lose hope!! there is still plenty of time! last year people were finding out all the way until February. its not over until you get the letter!

BClove21 - I'm in the same boat as you with schools........ I guess I'll see you on 1/28???

....but after my denial to CSU, edinburgh moved up to numero uno on my list... so i couldn't be more excited!

Ha ha ha me too! I got into the 5 year program.

I have some documents regarding pet export to UK. I obtained these from USDA's office. They are basically supportive documents for DEFRA's official documents. I found the instruction helpful. USDA's office said they will preliminarily approve the document via fax before approving it officially.

I have a question for current Dick student who brought pets with you from US. Can I have any vet sign the deworming section? Or does it have to be a USDA approved vet?

Thanks, and congrats to everyone who got in. For those of you waiting, hang in there tight.

you sure will, that's when my interview is too (which is the exact same date as my RVC interview so I hope RVC will switch because Tech won't)

Hey, do you mind posting the link to those stats? I was curious about it myself! Thanks 🙂

WOW, Congrats everyone!!!! Been doing EMS this week and missed out on the fun! I am the student who came over on the QM2 and can help with all questions regarding getting your pups over here. Just know that the QM2 is already booked up for next year and as of a month ago were not even accepting anyone for the waitlist 🙁

If you've already had dog microchipped and rabies vacc, just make SURE the microchip number is on the certificate. That is the only way it will work without starting over. Also, i had non-ISO chips in my dogs (have since put in ISO chips for identification over here), and you can use these as long as you bring your own chip reader. If you have the time, just go ahead and start off with ISO chips since you will most likely want to get a pet passport done when you get here (makes it so you don't have to jump through hoops if you want to travel in UK, or back to US and back to UK with your dogs for any reason).

As far as the tick and tapeworm treatment, NO it does not have to be a USDA vet. Any vet will do.

I stayed in a festival flat (August is the festival here) for the first 3 wks while i looked for a proper flat for term. As Chii Chan said, almost impossible to get a flat without seeing it first. I arranged the festival flat through gumtree and she knew of my two smallies. SoBeVet is the one who stayed in dog friendly B&B's...they are prevalent here.

For the GEP's, I MAY be going home for the entire summer and MAY have a flat available for rent for the month of August. It's in town, so you'd have to bus to Easter Bush. But, your schedule is not too hectic in August, so it would be fine. This is a primo spot to be for Festival too! And, there is an awesome park (the Meadow) one block from my house that is a doggie haven. More on this later as my plans develop, but I would recommend the GEP's looking for something through another vet student for a few weeks while they look for accomodation.

It is not difficult to find accommodation that allows dogs (maybe a little more difficult for the massive ones), but takes some more time. I had my former landlord write a glowing recommendation letter for my boys and my landlord met them. It was probably easier for me because they are so small and obviously can't do too much damage.

Sorry for the book. I am around the next 2 weeks and then will probably disappear until 3rd week of February, as this is when we have our first major exams

CKD816... I'm sorry for the late response! I went out of town and decided to stay away from this forum for the holiday but well that only worked for a couple of days!!!
Here is the link to the file, it first lists out undergrad, then goes to grad and includes both "home applicant" statistics and then international statistics for the vet school on the very last page.... http://www.ed.ac.uk/polopoly_fs/1.50503!fileManager/UoE Admissions Statistics 2010-11.pdf

congrats everyone! Let me know if this link doesn't work, you may have to copy and paste... and if anyone knows about accepting late applications again this year, I would be grateful for the info!

Thanks so much! I hope you're enjoying your holiday. 🙂

So is anyone pretty sure they are going yet? And will anyone be at the San Fran reception on February 1st?

Also accepted into the GEP, just forgot to write due to an early wakeup on the 22nd that led to me napping all day. Anyway, congrats on the acceptances everyone, Happy Holidays

Got in and I am going Edinburgh is my number one choice.

Am trying to figure out how to get my two dogs out- border collie and shep/sheltie thing. Not to mention finding somewhere to live. And it is already making me crazy.

Am planning to go to the Feb 1st one does anyone else know if they are going to go.

congrats to you! i am bringing my dog as well, he is a german shep/sheltie mix, sounds like they could be friends and herd each other! i am very apprehensive about the living situation, but it appears the best thing to do is go over homeless, and try and find a place with your little doggie. who here has started the extensive process of prepping their pet to travel!? i take down time at work to read through document after document. rabies titer is sent to the lab, so at least i am started on things!

http://www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-pets/pets/travel/factsheet/factsheet.htm

fact sheet 4 is the one i am going through now with a fine tooth comb. highlighting important things and all. its very helpful, and that website is the main one you want to look at as well as going to scotland's rules and regulations. so nervous about this but i know it will be worth it

I mean, if you guys can swing it...it could work to come over up to a month before you leave to look for a place...that is certainly an option. The problem is..you most likely will be swamped with getting your visa at that time.

So what happens at the receptions in february? Anyone else going to the one in NYC on feb. 3?

So what happens at the receptions in february? Anyone else going to the one in NYC on feb. 3?

don't know what happens exactly, check your acceptance email, they mention a few points about it (I didn't see this until I read the email for like the third time). I am VERY EXCITED. My RVC interview is the week before (Jan 24th in NYC also, day after my birthday... I think I have mentioned this numerous times haha). I know for a fact too February 3rd happens to be the date of curiousRACCS birthday... a very happy birthday indeed! :hardy: Maybe they will have a birthday cake?! haha

ps. I just ordered my pups pet passport for Scotland via http://www.classypets.com/Merchant5...TS&Product_Code=FORM055&Category_Code=PTSFORM

probably could have found this stuff elsewhere without paying 30 bucks and I will probably be told I got ripped off, but hey, I like how organized it was and it will have everything I need. Now all that is left is a carrier, and finding us a home :xf:

I was at the NYC reception last year. It's very nice. You get to meet a lot of potential fellow students, they serve lunch (and TASTY desserts), and the folks from Edinburgh give presentations. One was on the city itself and living in Scotland, one was on the financial/immigration/etc side of things, and one was on the vet school curriculum and such. Flyhi and others can correct me if I'm remembering wrong! They also give you a huge folder filled with info. Basically it is low stress and everyone is very friendly, and it's exciting to get to talk to the professors and other students.

Yeah, this stuff is totally free on the defra website 😀.... But, if it makes your life easier and ensures your paperwork is error-free, then it's probably worth it. 👍

The reception is just as whyevernot said and is a lot of fun. The presentations were given by two professors here who were absolutely hysterical. One is Dr. Corcoran (smallies) and the other Dr. Hudson (equine). They jabbed at each other the entire time....it was fabulous. Not sure if they are making the trip again, if so, you are in for a treat.

ohhh no i should have said, if someone found it for free, don't tell me...it comes with a bunch of stuff, so maybe that is what i am paying for?? including a pet passport FOLDER haha

Yep, I'm going on February 1st. My RVC interview is scheduled that day but I think I'm going to cancel and withdraw my name from consideration there as I much prefer Edinburgh. 🙂

I still have yet to hear back from any of my other schools, but I've had my heart set on Edinburgh for a while now... so this means I'm 99% sure I will be a Dick vet!!

So I was trying to read through the old thread to get a feel for what I'm in for exactly as far as financial aid and visa crap is concerned... what is with that bit about having to have all first year tuition plus 5,400 pounds in an account for at least 28 days before applying for your visa?? Where does one find these large sums of money? Haha 😕 And from what I understand, it will go something like this: apply for financial aid --> send financial guarantee to school --> wait for unconditional firm letter --> send financial info and offer letter with visa application --> wait and freak out until visa comes --> freak out more until the day you leave? Someone please fill in the gaps for me and/or correct me where I'm wrong!

Oh, and we don't get any loan money until school actually starts right? So we will have to budget for funding initial travel and rent set-up expenses without the help of financial aid, yes?

flyhi and whyevernot55- thanks for the info about the reception, i am pretty sure that i am going to edinburgh (i still have an interview for glasgow but i am 70% sure that i am going to edinburgh) I am really looking forward to this reception!! it took me about 5 times reading my acceptance email to actually realize what the reception entailed.

I guess that instead of freaking out about getting into vet school i should start freaking out about how to pay for it and all of that moving overseas crap (aka visas, moving to a different country, etc.)

everything considered though I am really excited to become a Dick vet!! 😀😀

I got accepted to the 5 year program as well. So happy to be accepted, but since I've been out of school for a few years, I'm not sure if I can get used to the idea of going for 5 years instead of 4...
Looking forward to the reception in SF on Feb 1! I'm sure it will help me decide one way or the other.

He would love to have friends he goes to daycare every day so will be sad if its just him and his brother. So far we have microchipped, done rabies and rabies titer which came back with the results. I started a while ago. So hopefully they are mostly set other than starting the paperwork which can not be started until 4 months before you fly.

Im lucky actually am from Scotland so I dont have to worry about visa as I have a UK passport. But am planning on going out one month before and trying to find a place but who knows.

My RVC interview is the week before as well and is actually the same day as my VMRCVM interview so I hope RVC will switch with me. I will be going to NYC back to back weeks and Feb 3 is my little sister's birthday so we are going to try and make a weekend of it...(popular day for a birthday)

This may be a silly question but aside from pet stuff if that applies, is there anything we can really start doing now in prep for leaving to go over there?

Like Flyhi said, I hope Dr. Corcoran and Hudson go again. I think Dr. Corcoran is finishes lecturing the GEPs for AB3 by then so hopefully he should be free. Oh the coffee was really good there too BTW. I went to the SF one and at the table I was sitting at I think only one person at that table declined and went somewhere else. At the end there was also a good opportunity to ask them questions about anything.

Last year was special for getting our loans approved so following last year's thread on finances isn't the best indicator of how your headache is going to go. This last year the US government changed the way they did their loans so that 3rd party banks weren't not the people giving out the loans, it came directly from the government instead (Direct Loans). The University had to train their staff to know how to deal with these new Direct Loans and they couldn't have anyone train them until the middle of June, which pushed back the date we were able to get our loan papers (to get our VISAs) until July 1st. For the GEPs who were starting August 9th, this posed a problem for us so Robert Laurie who is the head of the finances department gave everyone (except me since I was in Japan at the time they were trying to contact me) a loan paper that approved everyone for their VISAs earlier without having the actual paper. I sent mine in as soon as possible on the 9th of July, paid an extra process fast fee and was approved on the 12th.

The extra money you were concerned about has to do with someone who doesn't have loans. They want the money in your bank account to prove you have enough to fund yourself. It's not at all the same if you're on the loans.

And yes, you don't get the loan money until school starts. Except right now they are working with someone to help them deposit the money directly into our bank accounts so we don't have to pick up a physical check (for massive amounts of pounds that makes me a paranoid freak walking around until it's deposited). Though I'd assume your first check would be in check form since the school wouldn't know about your bank account information yet. We got them on Monday the 9th of August. I pulled out money at the same time as depositing my check since I knew it would take a few days (it took a week to deposit). Plus I didn't have my bank card yet (that took an extra week or week and a half?).

Regarding banks, I had no problem getting a bank account before school started with Lloyds. They didn't require much and got everything set up the first day. Go with the FREE account (she kept trying to sell me a better one, which I didn't need) and ask for a checkbook while you're there since you will be writing various checks for DVP, horse society, etc., depending on what you want/need. Checkbooks are free and it took about 7 business days to arrive so ask early.

This may be a silly question but aside from pet stuff if that applies, is there anything we can really start doing now in prep for leaving to go over there?

Enjoy your acceptance and start acquiring a taste for whiskey? 😀

Start looking at booking flights. It's expensive in the summer due to the festival. I booked mine in May (early May?) and it was about $1000 from SFO. I know someone who booked it in June/July from Detroit and it was about $1300. Haha these are one way tickets FYI. Reviews say BMI loses your luggage. Someone on FB said DELTA stands for Don't Expect Luggage To Arrive. Continental was fantastic (but slightly expensive). In coach they gave me real silverware to eat my dinner with! 🙂 Plus they didn't lose my luggage (or the other students' luggage who used Continental).

Tip: try to plan out meeting up with people beforehand (like SDNers since mass e-mailing your new classmates is kind of rude IMO). One member and I coincidentally ended up flying the exact same EWR-EDI lag on Continental and stayed in Pollack before moving into Pollack for the 5 weeks. It made it much less scary knowing I'd have another vet student in the same situation as me. Plus splitting cab fare was nice and the cab driver pointed out where Summerhall was on the drive to Pollack. 🙂

This sounds great, I was already planning on attending the one in NYC, but now I am sold😀 The thought of moving overseas to go to school seems overwhelming, so I am really excited to go to the reception to get a better idea of what I am getting into!!

Whew, that's a relief! Thanks for all of the info! 🙂

Hi All!
So, I have NOT heard from Edinburgh yet🙁
My interview is on the 24th in NYC as well! Very excited, I live in NYC which makes the process easier for me. Their office is closed for the holidays I *** hope*** I hear from them soon!

I received an acceptance to Edinburgh last week! I'm excited, its my first acceptance!!! I'm still waiting to hear from more places though

What do the current students think about the consolidation of Edinburgh vet campus in Easter Bush? Are you planning on living nearby? I know it's accessible by bus, but it looks like there are some cute towns within biking distance.

I really like the idea. But that said, I am also really happy I got to study at Summerhall the last year they are using it.

As far as living nearby goes, I got a place that is about half way between both campuses. It is south of the city center and I was lucky to find an actual house with a wee garden for the dogs. Also, if you live a bit out of the city the rent is cheaper.

The bus system is phenomenal (aside from them leaving me stranded in town when the snow storm hit). I never have to wait more than 5 - 10 minutes for a bus and you can pretty much get anywhere you want to go. Biking is also an option. Some of my classmates do that.

Easter Bush is going to be absolutely amazing 😍 I too, am very glad we got to do a year in Summerhall...it was fab. A lot of students may stay in town, or in the middle since EB really is in the country. However, i plan on living as close as possible. Yes, there are some 'cute' towns, but not sure i would feel comfortable biking from some of them, as the main road to EB is pretty busy. Advice would be to live somewhere on the main bus route - 67. The 15 also goes out there.

Good Luck!:luck::luck:
