I'm looking to apply for an anesthesiology residency during my internship this year. I can go the usual way through ERAS, but I'd be stuck repeating my intern year. I'm looking into transferring straight into CA1 to avoid a second intership if possible. I know that some programs save a few positions for direct entry as a CA1, and that others will have unexpected openings. Rather than writing every program, I thought I'd start looking here. Who do you know of that saves positions? Also, how can I find out about other openings when the time comes?

post here or PM me thanks

Do a search of the forums and you will find a wealth of information on this topic.

Here's my take. You can go through ERAS. If you apply to categorial programs, you're stuck being an intern again. That sucks. If you apply to advanced programs, you'll have to wait a year and then start as a CA-1. If you go that route, you may find some programs who have spots open for that year, so you don't have to wait. But it's hard to know which programs will have that. They're not necessarily well advertised. Because you're applying as an intern, you're not bound by the match in the same way that 4th years are, and you and the programs are free to go outside the match. I'd suggest sending programs a CV and cover letter expressing interest in a position beginning one year from now, assuming you're starting your internship in the next few weeks. You can get the addresses off FREIDA and make a form letter in Word and do a mail merge so every program gets a "personalized" letter and you don't have to do that much work. Figure $39 for postage to mail 100 letters and a few extra dollars for paper and envelopes. That's a lot cheaper than going through the match, especially if you get a spot that way. Good luck.
