Hey! I looking into transfering into Cal Poly Pomona for the Pre-vet degree. Does anyone know what their animal use policy is? How do they use the animals to teach? Are they euthanized after? Do they offer alternatives to using animals?

Also, what is the area like? I never been to California, so any information would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hey I am actually at Cal Poly, but not pre-vet. However, they do mostly live Ag animal work in the beef unit with sheep cows goats and pigs by performing the routine procedures such as dehorning, castration, palpations, and stuff like that. They also take some restraint classes, and nutrition and anatomy courses, and a few from the biology department. They can also work around the Arabian horse center, and I don't think any animals are euthanized. It is the Animal Health science that does most of the medical type of course work since they graduate then test for their RVT. The pre vet program centered its ciriculum around what is required for admission at UC Davis, so they do prepare you pretty well. I believe the animals that they use are student voulnteered or from the community that need the procedures kind of like how Western does theirs except live.

As far as the area, it is an odd suburban rural type of feel. You are close to Los Angeles, which is nice if you like the city, but the school itself is much more relaxed. Also something to keep in mind is that most students commute and there is not a ton of on campus housing, so be sure to look into other options just in case. Good luck deciding.

hey! there's a few of us on here that are in the pre-vet program at cal poly pomona. what badcats said is exactly what we do. BUT...all those things we do with the farm animals only happen in a few classes in the 180 units that you need to take.

there are a lot of people on here that were bio majors, chem majors, etc.... so you dont 'have to' be pre-vet and it's not a 'shoe-in' if you are pre-vet.

BUT...i'd like to say that i love cal poly, they have a lot of volunteer opportunities so you can always have animal experience with goats, sheep, pigs, cows and horses. and the vet-tech program has an internship that we can take advantage of (where you work 40 hours the whole quarter as a class and it's easy 2 units). so i had no experience at an animal hospital and i did a couple of internships and got a job! so that was pretty neat.

anyway, if you have more questions, totally ask them. but definitely look up your local universities and colleges to see if anyone here has been there. 🙂

oh...and the area. pomona...isn't good. but the surrounding areas such as walnut, diamond bar, chino hills, san dimas....they're all nice areas and within 20 minutes away from the school. i live in chino hills and work in diamond bar and it's all really nice. 🙂

YaY Cal Poly!!! 😀
I go there, and just like ck (HI Cathy!) I luv Cal Poly, and I couldn't imagine going anywhere else.
Just to clear up one thing... all the animals at the Beef, Sheep, Swine, and Horse unit belong to the campus completely, and aren't donaged or brought by the community. That being said, there's not much to do on-campus for small animal stuff, unless you're in the Animal Health Science (Vet Tech) program. But that kind of experience is easier to get in outside jobs/internships, I think anyway.

The curriculum is based on UC Davis' requirements, but includes lots of other higher level classes that while they may not be absolutely needed for admission, a few of my friends who have already gone to vet school have said that they've come in handy. 🙂

The only downside... it's true, the area surrounding, in the actual city of Pomona, is preeeeeety shady, and housing is hard to come by. However, there's tons of stuff surrounding, although it might be a little more pricey. Most people commute, anyway, and you can still be really involved in lots of fun stuff on-campus. 🙂

Any questions... just ask! 😀

Its a great feeder school for Vet Programs. I interviewed at Kansas State last weekend and after answering how my work load for school would change in a vet program and saying I think it would be the same the interviewer even mentioned that Cal Poly Pomona graduates come out of a great program that has the students extremely well prepared for vet school. Don't get me wrong it has its issues, mainly budget issues, but they try to give us every opportunity. I'm a coordinator for the livestock team so I've been getting tons of experience in our livestock beef unit. Very few if any animals are euthanized with the exception of animals for certain research projects. All the livestock animals are school owned and maintained by students working at the units, you can even live down there in exchange for board and work there.

Hey guys!

CPP is a great school and we are veryyy fortunate to have all the different animals here especially for our labs! (especially reproduction lab where we are VERY hands on!)

There are so many opportunities to get animal experience and as "geequed" mentioned earlier you can live at school for "free" in xchange for working at the different units.. beef/horse/swine/sheep and goat😀

As for the rest of you.. see you tomorow at school😎

I was there 7 years ago so specific details from me probably won't be all that helpful, but I had to reply that Cal Poly Pomona rocks! I LOVED that place!😀
