I haven't had my interviews yet, but I have talked to a lot of knowledgeable people about both of those programs...

MUSC - seems to be a pretty traditional curriculmn and call schedule. Right now the quality of the residents isn't quite as high as some other academic programs in the south -- however, the faculty is young and top notch and it is a program on the rise according to almost every one I have spoken to.

Charlotte (Carolinas Medical Center) - IS AN EXCELLENT community based training program that is tailored to training a generalist, but actually has a great track record matching people in fellowships. They seem to give residents much more control of their training experience than other programs (they contact you right after the match to try to determine your electives from your intern year). I talked to one person who did a preliminary year there and she loved the atmosphere and the excellent education.

I would agree with what you have stated about the MUSC program. I did go interview there. I was more impressed than I thought I would have been. I would say that they are a happy group of residents, quite competent, and lay-back. The residency programs certainly promotes residents to have a full life outside of work. The staff does seem top notch and provide nice learning environment. The majority are going into fellowships -- typically there first or second choice.
If you are debating on interviewing there, would check your career goals. If you are pursuing an academic position -- reach higher. If not, I would consider MUSC.
BTW, Charleston would be a fabulous place to live during your residency.
Cheers.
