Please Help me rank! Currently interested in GI. This is where I've interviewed at:

Orlando health
RUSH
University of New Mexico
UIC
Cooper Rowan
Medical College of Wisconsin
Cook County

Currently I think my top 3 are Rush/UIC/Cooper but really liked my new mexico interview

I think they're reasonably rated. Probably would do Case over Rush tooo
Been having the same thoughts on Case over Rush more recently. Really only other debates I've been having would be OSU/UWis over UMich, but mainly for QOL reasons.

Any help is greatly appreciated! What's most important to me is QoL, resident culture/closeness/vibes, scheduling with time for electives/weekends/cush schedule (to visit family/friends that live in NYC and DC), teaching. Am single so would like to consider QoL for activities and possibly dating culture, etc (in our little free time). Enjoy slightly smaller cities like DC over very large like NYC.
Interested in Cardiology or Pulm/cc but also considering hospitalist. Want to go somewhere where it'll set me up for subspecialty if I want it, while being a bit laid back considering I don't know if I even want to sub-specialize.

1. GW
2. Rutgers RWJ
3. Rutgers NJMS or NS/LIJ
4. NS/LIJ or Rutgers NJMS
5. UMass Chan
6. Case Western/UH
7. Stony Brook
8. Penn State

There's not a ton of difference in all those places from a "program strength/reputation" standpoint. So if you like them this way based on what's important to you then it's a completely reasonable list as is.

I'd personally put UMass in the top 3, but if it didn't give you the vibes you were looking for, it's fine where it is.

Just wondering your thoughts on why UMass higher?
I actually really enjoyed the program on interview day and have been wrestling between putting it in the top 3 but was worried location setting and it being further from family in the NJ/Connecticut area. Their schedule (3+2) is pretty awesome and i did get good vibes on interview day.

This is definitely a first draft of my list so im very open to hearing thoughts & pros/cons of any of these programs

I think it's a bit of a stronger program than NJMS and I don't dislike that area. But if the others are a better choice for you for other reasons, we're really just splitting hairs here.

Hi, would appreciate input and just make sure I’m not missing anything and that my choices align with priorities, prioritizing heme/onc opportunities and prestige > QOL > or = city living, thanks in advance

1. UNC
2. Emory
3. Boston University
4. Case Western/UH
5. Brown
6. Rush

Your top 2 are correct. Either order is fine for them. The next 4 should be "as you like it".

Culture and Vibes change from year to year as people change. I don't think you can really predict that unless you know a lot of the people currently.

Yes and no. While your co-residents (and faculty to a lesser, but real, extent) change from year to year, culture tends to be a bit more ingrained and much harder to change. Not that it doesn't, just that "culture eats strategy for breakfast" applies here except the strategy is people.

Hello all, I would like some input solely based on the goal of pursuing heme/onc fellowship. I realize most of these programs are similar but if there are any that stand out as better/worse than the rest that would be helpful to know. Thank you!

- UCSD
- UC Irvine
- U South Florida
- Indiana
- Maryland
- Temple
- UIC
- Loyola Chicago
- UNC Chapel Hill

Hello everyone, DO student currently interested in GI.
1. Inova Fairfax Medical Center
2. University of Cincinnati
3. Medical College of Georgia
4. UT-Memphis
5. University of Louisville
6. Carilion Clinic/Virginia Tech
7. Advocate Lutheran General Hospital
8. University of South Carolina - Greenville

Am I crazy for putting a "community" program first? It is 1000+ beds, level 1 trauma, 6.4 mil metro population, just outside of DC. Family in the area and parents only a 3.5hr drive away. My particular ethnic group is dense in this area and I'm still a bachelor. The program just started their inaugural GI class.
My interest in GI is firm and strong, but I want to be happy, especially considering it's likely I'll be spending the next 6 years somewhere.

I would appreciate input on the rest of the list too. Thank you so much

Though I’m not in the DC metro - I am aware of the Inova system and the complex pathology seen within in.

Anyone have any thoughts on Zucker North Shore/LIJ? how does it compare to other programs in the area, strengths of fellowship match, etc.

Interested in cards - would appreciate any guidance! Prioritizing QOL, residency culture, prestige, city living

1. UChicago
2. UMich
3. Rush

Depends on where you would like to be. Midwest is different from East Coast. But for the midwest, I would rank Mich = U Chicago > Case > Rush > UIC. It seems like you have a lot of Chicago programs, so if you want to be there then I'd move them above Case. I heard UChi residents are worked hard. For the East coast Yale >> Boston >> GW. Yale generally matches really well. GW may give you proximity to Medstar Washington, but other than that I don't think it will give you any unique opportunities to explore cardiology. I would move the programs around based on how much Cardiac ICU and cardiology wards time. You also want to be the bigger referral center in the area so you get all the great cardiology cases.

Hello all and Happy New Year! Would appreciate any guidance on where to rank my 4-10. Priority would be residency culture, matching fellowship in NYC if possible (thinking ID), prestige, city living.

Really wrestling with where to rank these programs vs. Monte / NYU BK. Was wondering if anyone had input on that dilemma in terms of program prestige and culture. Thank you so much!

1. Monte
2. NYU BK
3. Maryland
4. Tufts
5. Temple
6. Miami
7. Zucker

In terms of training you will receive I would say Miami is next after Maryland. Temple is larger and you’ll receive better training than tufts or zucker but definitely more Monte like in terms of patient population and clinical rigor. Would do temple->tufts—>zucker unless being in nyc metro is very important (I see you put nyu BK above everything else except Monte-by rigor of training and reputation I would put it below Maryland Miami tufts and maybe temple fwiw) and then would put zucker higher

Hi, thanks in advance for the help. I'm looking to pursue cardiology. I can't decide between my top 4. I loved the feel of Duke and Utah's (outdoors, seemed like a fun group) programs. I'm worried about the Hopkins schedule (24 hour call still), but surprisingly liked the interview day. All my friends live in New York City and I get bad FOMO. Any advice?

Should I be considering Duke or Hopkins over the others for future career opportunities? Even though I'd prefer living in NYC or SLC...

NYU= Hopkins = Duke = University of Utah.

Vanderbilt = Jeff or RWJ = UPMC

Hi all. Priority is residency culture and prestige for matching allergy, possibly GI. Thanks!

Current ROL below. I've heard good things about all programs in the top 5-6, particularly Iowa, but curious to get other input

UC Irvine
UC Davis
Colorado
OHSU
Iowa
Indiana

Minnesota
Nebraska

I would consider those places all solid mid tier programs (except maybe Tulane these days). You can't go wrong with literally any order there.

what's wrong with Tulane?

I’m really conflicted about the top 4 because SLU had such sweet vibes but they didn’t talk at all about their fellowship outcomes on interview day. They also didn’t talk about research, so I really don’t know whether I would be able to feel confident for fellowship and how fellowships look at the program. Allegheny had nice vibes too but one of the residents was an dingus during interview day.

I’m honestly just listing the first 4 cause it is really hard to get their vibes from the interview, and I don’t care about location. The others I saw were nice though. Uconn I’m conflicted about because I know their fellowship outcomes are amazing but I really couldn’t vibe check them well. Any insight or recommendation would be appreciated. I’ve been super conflicted the past week and any advice would be great.

1. Uconn
2. Allegheny
3. MCG
4. SLU
5. LVHN
6. Geisinger
7. Louisville
8. Henry ford (i’m sorry but those residents are worked to death, and no matter what they said, they looked awful)
9. WVU

If anyone could provide input into this list? I'm looking at doing GI.

Hi everyone, I'm struggling to rank my top 4 choices. I'm undecided about fellowship, though my choice there would be pulm/crit or GI.

Most important thing for me is quality of training/reputation- diversity/breadth of pathology, procedural competency, all the things etc. I'm comfortable living in any of these locations but appreciate input about them. Any advice appreciated!

Tulane
UMMC
UF Jacksonville
Carolinas Medical Center

Other favorites: FSU Sarasota, Prisma Columbia

Hi everyone! I am struggling on how to order my rank list. I think I may want to do GI or heme/onc. Hoping to go into leadership of some sorts.

I really value the quality of training and location. I also want a good QOL and culture. I hope to stay in the South (born and raised here).

1. Duke
2. Emory
3. Vanderbilt
4. UNC
5. UAB
6. Kentucky
7. Hopkins

Outside of the South (had to fill my signals):
7. Northwestern
8. MGH
9. Columbia

Any thoughts or advice? I really loved my interview day at all of them...

First off this an absolutely baller interview list so well done. Vandy has great culture and exceptional training and fits your geo pref. QOL is not great though as an intern. When I interviewed there for residency I remember the interns were some of the hardest worked in the country aside from Duke. But, like i said exceptional training and excellent match list. I would put Vandy first. I did remember the Vandy chiefs and seniors saying after PGY1 it gets significantly more chill as you enter seniorhood. Id rank Hopkins low horrible QOL and culture with exceptional training nonetheless.

Hi all - Interested in GI/Heme Onc/Cards.

Debating if I should rank Rochester #1 since my partner is from there and we will have a ton of family support (hoping to start family soon).

Is the prestige/better ranking of Colorado/UPMC/UNC worth less family support? My family is in Colorado but would have less family support than Rochester.

Would it be easier to match fellowship or am I fine at UofR?

U of R is 6+2 and others are 4+4 or 2+2+2 (UNC) so I'd have a worse schedule too.

1. Rochester
2. Colorado
3. UNC
4. UPMC
5. Utah

6. Wake
7. Dartmouth
8. Hofstra
9. MUSC
10 Penn State
11. U Az - Tucson
12. New Mexico
13. StonyBrook

FWIW I do think that UNC and Pitt would give you better opportunity matching into your field of choice as they are in my opinion higher enough tier than Rochester to make a difference in that regard

PS-Put Dartmouth last. Lebanon, NH is the worst city in the country to live (nothing to do/you will be bored to tears on your time off, nearest city/airport is minimum 2 hrs away, cold af, everything closes at 7pm, the food scene is laughably horrible, cards mentorship is abysmal, hemeonc mentorship is below avg at best). Seems like you have a partner so may not be as bad but if youre single Dartmouth is a death wish to your dating life.

I think this depends on where you see things going with your partner and if you guys want kids during residency or if you want to settle/ match in house for fellowship. I know you said you want to start a family soon, but I don't know if that means during residency or fellowship. Realistically, during residency, you are going to be working long hours, so I think your partner and you being near their family could help your partnership not take as much of a hit from residency because you are no longer going to be as present in their life as you are, especially in that first year. They don't get much of a choice in where you go cause none of this is certain, but I think placing the probabilities in their favor because it does change their life too will at least be worth a try for the sake of a happy relationship and future family.

I understand the desire for prestige and an easier fellowship match, but medicine will never love you as much as your partner or future family.

Thank you so much! I liked my interview at Vanderbilt, but they just didn't seem to have the same opportunities as some of the other places I applied to in terms of leadership paths/pipelines (Duke, UAB, UNC felt better in how I see my career). Although all programs have some cons, I also can't seem to get past how overworked they are at Vanderbilt! Duke seems to have changed their schedule, and it seems residents are happier with the workload. And I do plan to rank Hopkins low. Lol. They seem miserable.

Any thoughts on this?

I know you want to stay in the south, but I wouldn’t discount MGH since very few people have the chance to actually go there. It is an awesome program and in case you are interested in academics or find yourself drawn to academic medicine it can open a lot of doors. You can always return to the south for fellowship or your first post fellowship job.
